1. Ice-cream is a delicious frozen treat that comes in a many different colors and
flavors. Two of my favorite flavors are strawberry and chocolate. Though both
of these flavors are delicious, strawberry may contain pieces of fruit while
chocolate usually will not. Even though more chocolate ice cream is sold across
the country annually than strawberry, each flavor tastes great inside of a milk
shake.

b. cause and effect d. problem and solution
2. A lot of students have been failing classes. These students wouldn’t be failing
classes if they studied more, asked questions, tried harder, and came in for extra
help. Even though many students fail classes, they have many options if they
want to pass and to solve their concern.

a. compare and contrast c. description

b. cause and effect d. problem and solution

3. Making ice cream is not easy. Cream and sugar have to first be mixed in a
frozen container. Ingredients may be added at this point, if desired. The mixture
must be stirred and whipped until the cream and sugar mixture is frozen.
Depending on the equipment, this may take as long as an hour. After the ice-
cream is prepared, it must be kept frozen until it is ready to be enjoyed. Making
ice-cream is difficult, but most people would agree that it is worth the trouble.

a. problem and solution c. cause and effect

b. sequence/order d. description

4. Lots of students fail classes. Some students fail because the work is too hard
for them. Other times they may fail because they are lazy, and don’t do any
work. Another reason why students may fail is if they don’t go to school. If
you’re not in class you may miss a lot. Many students fail classes every quarter.

Sequence/Order, Compare and Contrast, Cause and Effect, or Problem and Solution.
Write your answer on a separate answer sheet.

1. Have you ever seen a mouse or rat in or around your home? Mice and rats are
considered pests since they steal food from people. They are hard to get rid of because
they move quickly and they hide in walls and other tight places that are difficult for
people to reach. But you don’t have to live with them any longer. You can keep them
away without using any poisons into your home. You can do this by getting a cat. This is
the nature’s potential alternative for a rodent problem. Cats have very sharp senses and
lightning quick reflexes. They are excellent hunters. Not only will a cat help to solve your
issue with rodents, they will also kill any small birds that they can catch. So rather than
sharing your home with a greedy mouse or a filthy rat, share it with a cat.

2. There are two types of people in this world: cat people and dog people. Which type are
you? Well, if you like a pet that is low maintenance, you might be a cat person. Cats are
easier to take care of than dogs because cats are very independent. Since they use litter
boxes, they do not have to be taken outside to go potty like dogs. Also, cats clean
themselves while dogs need occasional baths. If you prefer a pet that requires more
attention, you may be a dog person. Most dogs are very loyal and obedient. You can
play games like fetch or tug of war with a dog. Dogs will also alert you when someone is
outside of your home, whereas cats will usually just stay quiet. Both cats and dogs like to
be petted, and they both make excellent pets, but it takes a certain kind of person to own
them. Which kind of person are you?

3. A coconut is a tropical fruit. It comes from Asia originally, but it grows in Puerto Rico,
Hawaii, Central America, and South America. A coconut grows on a coconut palm,
which looks like a palm but actually is taller and has more leaves. The coconut appears
to be shades of brown and has a hairy shell. On the inside, there is a watery liquid called
coconut milk. After you break through the shell, you find what is called the coconut meat.
Both the meat and the milk are white. Dried coconut meat is called copra. The coconut is
a very interesting fruit.

B. Directions: From the passages below, identify the structure of the informational text.
Write the letter of the correct answer. Then, put the information from each passage into
an appropriate graphic organizer. Write your answer on a separate sheet.

a. Look down at your feet. Are you wearing shoes? Why? People wear shoes many
reasons. The first and most important reason is to protect their feet. Shoes keep people
from hurting their feet while walking on rough surfaces, but this isn’t the only reason why
people wear shoes. Some people wear special shoes that are designed to help them
play a game, like bowling shoes or soccer cleats. Some people wear expensive designer
shoes so that they appear fashionable and feel good about themselves. And a lot of
other people wear shoes so that their feet won’t stink up the room.

b. Before applying the screen protector, clean the surface of your phone’s screen with a
soft cloth. Once the surface of your screen is clean, remove the paper backing on the
screen protector. Evenly apply the sticky side of the screen protector to your phone’s
screen. Smooth out any air bubble trapped on between the protector and the phone
screen. Enjoy the added protection.

B. Description E. Compare and Contrast
C. Problem and Solution

1. All matter, all things can be changed in two ways: chemically and physically. Both chemical
and physical changes affect the state of matter. Physical changes are those that do not
change the make-up or identity of the matter. For example, clay will bend or flatten if
squeezed, but it will still be clay. Changing the shape of clay is a physical change, and does
not change the matter’s identity. Chemical changes turn the matter into a new kind of matter
with different properties. For example, when paper is burnt, it becomes ash and will never be
paper again. The difference between them is that physical changes are temporary or only
last for a little while, and chemical changes are permanent, which means they last forever.
Physical and chemical changes both affect the state of matter.

2. When I got home from school after a long boring day, I took out the peanut butter, jelly, and
bread. After taking the lid off of the jars, I spread the peanut butter on one side of the bread
and the jelly on the other, and then I put the two pieces of bread together. After that, I
enjoyed it while watching “Cops” on the TV. I swear, that was the best peanut butter and
jelly sandwich I ever ate.

3. No one knows exactly what causes tornados, but some scientists believe that when warm air
meets cold air, a tornado may form. The reason for this is that the warm air is lighter than
the cold air, so it rises up fast and meets different winds moving different directions. Under
the right conditions, this can cause a tornado. Though there is still much mystery
surrounding tornados, many people believe that when warm moist air meets cool dry air,
tornados can result.

4. The playground at the park is built for fun. There are plenty ways to get to the top just like –
a ladder, a stairway, and even a rock wall. Once at the top, kids can find plenty of things to
play with, like a curved tube, two different steering wheels, and even a tic-tac-toe board. And
two curved sliding boards make the perfect way to return to the ground.

5. Working on a computer may be easier and safer than working in a mine, but it doesn’t come
without risks. Using a computer for a long time can lead to poor eyesight, muscle loosening,
back pain, and injuries to the hands and wrists. If you find yourself working or playing on a
computer quite regularly, take a few steps to prevent these problems and you’ll thank
yourself later. When you are computing for a long time, take frequent breaks. Get up and
walk around every once and while. Exercise a little bit. Take your eyes off of the computer
screen. Stretch your hands and wrists. Straighten your back. It can be hard to pull yourself
away from your computer once you get into a zone, but your body will thank you later if you
do. Make your health a priority and don’t worry so much about what’s happening on that little
screen.
6. Bicycles are an excellent choice when it comes to transportation. Biking is healthy and faster
than walking, but it is also dangerous. Each year tens of thousands of people are killed or
Name: ___________________________________________ Grade: _________ Score

injured while riding a bicycle. This is because our roads are designed for motorists and not
cyclists, but we can change the landscape. Each time a road is built or rebuilt, we should put
in bike lanes. Clearly marked bicycle lanes will give cyclists a safer place to ride. Our cyclists
deserve this little bit of consideration. In fact, their very lives are depending on it.

7. There’s a reason why dogs are called “man’s best friend.” The good friendship that we have
with dogs is thousands of years old and, as with most good friendships, was formed by
mutual benefit. Dogs are of great value to people because they use their keen senses to
detect threats and alert their owners by barking. You may find your dog’s yapping to be quite
annoying, but under some circumstances it can be quite helpful. But people are of great
value to dogs too. Dogs who live with people usually have easier access to food and a safer
place to stay than they would on their own, and that truly is what friends are for.

8. Since I made honor roll every quarter this year, my mom is going to buy me a new phone for
my birthday. I can’t decide whether I want to get an iPhone or a Galaxy. They are both really
cool phones, and they cost about the same, but they are also different in a lot of ways too,
like the Galaxy has a bigger screen. The iPhone’s screen isn’t small or anything, it’s just not
as big as the Galaxy’s. However, the iPhone connects with my iTunes account. All of my
music is already uploaded to iTunes, so all I have to do is sync my phone and then I can
listen to all of my music. That’d be cool. But if I got the Galaxy, I could use Google Play to
upload my old songs and buy new ones. This would give me a chance to go through my old
music collection. That’d be cool too. I’m not sure which one I’m going to get but I’m super
pumped about it either way. Maybe if you make honor roll every quarter next year, you can
get a new phone too. It’s worth a shot.

9. HOW TO USE THE MICROSCOPE

1. Plug in the lamp.

2. Place a sample of what you wish to observe on a slide.
3. Adjust the mirror so it reflects light from the room up into the objective lens.
4. Place your slide with the specimen directly over the center of the glass circle on the stage.

5. With the LOW POWER objective lens placed over the slide, use the coarse focus knob.
6. Look through the eyepiece with one eye while closing the other eye.
7. Use the fine focus knob to fine

10. There are many reasons why people dance. Some people dance for fun, just because they
enjoy dancing. At other times, people dance for exercise or for weight loss, because
dancing can really get your heart beating. Also, sometimes people dance to try to get
boyfriends or girlfriends. Some people think that good dancing is attractive. There are many
reasons why people dance.

Example:
The twist is a dance inspired by rock and roll music. To do the Twist, first stand with your feet
approximately shoulder width apart. The torso may be squared to the knees and hips, or turned at an
angle so one foot is farther forward than the other. Then, hold your arms out from your body, bent at your
elbow. Next, rotate your hips, torso, and legs as a single unit with your arms staying more or less
stationary. Every so often lift one leg off of the floor for styling. Now you’re doing the twist!

1. Hurricanes and tornados are both amazing yet deadly natural phenomena. Both
generate deadly conditions, but in different ways. Tornados are likely to damage people
and property with their high winds, which go up to 300 miles per hour, but hurricanes are
generally more feared for their flooding. Also, hurricanes can produce tornados, which
makes them quite dangerous indeed.

2. When cotton candy is sold at markets or events, it is usually pink or blue, but the natural
color of cotton candy is as white the sugar that is used to make it. The reason why
cotton candy appears blue or pink is because of food coloring. Gelled food coloring is
added to the white sugar before it is spun, which causes the sugar molecules to combine
with the pigments in the food coloring. These food dyes do not affect the taste of the
cotton candy in any noticeable way, but they do transform the treat into the brightly
colored confection that consumers expect. This is why you will rarely find white cotton
candy. What do you think? Would you buy a bag of white cotton candy, or do you think
that it would be too weird?

3. Buying a computer can be a frightening and overwhelming task, but don't let that prevent
you from getting the right one. The first thing that you have to do is figure out which one
you want. Start by researching on the internet: read reviews and compare features.
Decide what's important to you and how much you are willing to pay. Once you have
found the right computer, it is time to compare prices. Search by the model number of
the computer. Check prices from at least three websites before you make your
purchase, and don't forget to factor in the cost of shipping and handling. Also Google the
name of the website on which you are planning to buy the computer and read reviews to
make sure that they are reputable before placing your order. If it looks good, enter your
information, await your shipment, and enjoy your new computer!

4. Streams face many problems. Chemicals like pesticides, herbicides, and oil can wash
into the stream during storms. Dirt and debris from construction sites and bare ground
cause problems too. But there is a solution. A riparian buffer zone, or an area of trees
and shrubs along a waterway, can dramatically improve water quality.

Bidasari

Buong
Bidasari.
