Charcoal Paper new potential fuel

By Marie Samantha D. Cruz

Paper dolls, paper airplane, paper boat, paper fan, paper hat… I used
to play with them when I was younger. Also, mother bought me a coloring and
a drawing book. Paper art is really fun. When she sent me to school, I learned
the other uses of paper and began to even more like it and love it. I found out
that this piece of paper will not only give me fun that I used to have but also
bring me to places where I can have more experiences and gain more
knowledge. “These wonderful papers…” I thought.
“But where does it come from? What is it made of?”, I asked my teacher
during our Science class. Then she patiently explained that it is from the bark
of trees, and that it will take years to have full grown trees to be cut down and
be made into pieces of paper. So, we need to recycle instead of wasting them.
In school, we used to segregate our garbage. Plastics are recyclable and
can be sold. Leaves and twigs are biodegradable and can serve as humus or
fertilizer for our “Gulayan sa Paaralan Project”, but what about our used
papers?
It was last year, when all of us in the school had our share to recycle
pieces of paper. Every grade level produced at least ten kilograms of charcoal
paper.
Yes, charcoal paper! We made our “pass your paper” into an income-
generating and energy-saving charcoal paper, instead of spoiling them.
According to some users, charcoal papers are affordable and more
convenient to use compared to the real charcoal.
So “pass your paper?” … Yes, we will.
Questions:
1. What is the article all about?
A. Charcoal Paper new potential fuel
B. Paper a potential fuel
C. New potential fuel

3
2. Who is the author of the article?
A. Marie D. Dela Cruz
B. Marie Samantha D. Cruz
C. Samantha DG. Cruz
3. Where does paper come from?
A. leaves
B. bark of trees
C. roots
4. What does the users tell about the charcoal paper?
A. charcoal paper is expensive
B. charcoal paper is hard to use
C. charcoal paper is affordable
5. What have you noticed about the article?
A. the article have title and body
B. the article have title, byline and body
C. the article have title, byline, body and conclusion

What is It
The story you read entitled “Charcoal Paper new potential fuel” is an
example of a feature article that gives us background information on a worthy
topic.

A feature article is a non – fiction. It is an essay based on facts. A

feature article is written to inform but entertaining. It can come in different
kinds like:

- Personality profile- this article reveals the personal lifestyle and

character of an individual
- Human interest story- this article discusses issues about human
experiences

4
- Historical feature- this article gives emphasis to important dates and
issues.

A feature article is a soft news and it is less restricted.

The basic elements of a feature article are.

1. Title- This part gives more information about the topic. This is also
known as the headline or the head of the article.

2. Byline- It is the part where we can see the author’name and his or
her affiliation. This is written below the title of the article.

3. Introduction- This part catches the reader’s attention to ensure that

the reader will read the entire article.

4. Body or Nub Head- This is the part where readers acquire the
necessary information about the article they want to read.

5. Conclusion- This part encapsulate your article. It drives home the

theme and that the reader will remember.

Some principles in writing features:

 Unity – This is a combination or ordering of parts in a literary or artistic

production that constitutes a whole or promotes an undivided total
effect.

 Coherence –It is a systematic or logical connection or consistency.

 Emphasis – This is the force or intensity of expression that gives

impressiveness or importance to something.

5
Look at the example below. This will serve as your guide in writing a feature
article.

Reason is there why we joined in this contest. We want to showcase to San

Josenians that the students of Abar 1st Elementary School have guts and will to
be involved in different contest through the help of our beloved teachers and
school head. Just always believe in the saying “No Guts, No Glory, No Retreat, No
Surrender”.

Terrible tension comes to us because 50 schools both public and private

joined the competition. Yearly, students like me are blessed because the
benevolent people of MASON created this kind of event. Imagine the honor
through medals, cash prizes, and trophies for the winning team.

It’s really amazing and exciting that we landed on the 3rd place after a
tenacious fight against St. John’s Academy. Thanks to my teammates and
especially to our coach who have been patient and dedicated to teach us
even though our time of reviews are very short. We experienced pressure all
throughout our training up to the competition.

My teammates and I got a place on the said competition because we

believed in one goal and we hold the reminders from our teachers “Just Enjoy
the contest, Do your best and God will do the rest” and after a long and terrific
moment we finally won at Narra Masonic Lodge Quiz Bee although we don’t
get the 1st place at least we tried our very best and thanks to God. We spry
when they gave us our awards not for ourselves but for our school. We
thank our Almighty God for giving us the strength to face our own fears.

Each of us felt nervous and panic stricken us because there is some

authoritative tricky order of questions which are hard especially Science. Oh my
God, memorization and reading those facts and symbols in a short period of
time are not easy but after this, challenge, It’s a tremendous success for us.
Proudly said to myself ”I did it! Good job girl! Joining in this kind of prestigious
contest is a privilege for a student like me.
Tit!... Tit!... Tit!... It is sound of a timer from a five big black speakers,
pressuring me and my teammates to think, solve, and write fast while the judges
are watching us at the stage .
