ENGAGE

Have you wondered how these rocks were formed and how long it took them
to form
D. Discussing new concepts and practicing The Earth is mainly composed of rocks. Rocks vary in sizes, shapes, and
new skills.#1 colors. Though rocks seem to be very hard, dense, and indestructible, they still break.
(Pagtalakay sa bagong konsepto at The breaking of rocks into fragments is known as weathering.
paglalahad ng bagong kasanayan #1)

EXPLORE Weathering is an important process that helps shape Earth’s surface. The
breaking of rocks results to soil formation and different landforms. This is also the
reason why we have amazing rock formations.

Weathering can either be mechanical, chemical or biological. Mechanical

weathering is the physical wearing away of rocks, while chemical weathering
involves a change in the composition of rocks as it breaks down into pieces.
Biological weathering caused by activities of living organisms.
E. Discussing new concepts and practicing
new skills #2.
(Pagtalakay sa bagong konsepto at Activity: Rock Breaking Challenge
paglalahad ng bagong kasanayan #2) Materials: 3 rock sample, hammer, and a concrete surface Ensure safety while
performing the activity especially with using the different materials.
Procedure:
EXPLORE 1. Get at least 3 rock samples found in your backyard.
2. Wrap the rock samples in a piece of cloth.
3. Put the wrapped rock samples on the concrete surface.

they still break.
EXPLAIN 4. True or False: The breaking of rocks into fragments is known as weathering.
5. True or False: Weathering can either be mechanical, chemical, or biological.

ELABORATE weathering.

I. Evaluating Learning Directions: Describe the process of weathering. Put a check mark (√) if the statement
(Pagtataya ng aralin) is correct and sad face if it is not.
_________ 1. Rocks are the toughest thing on earth that there is no single element
could break them through.
EVALUATE _________ 2. The hardness of a rock decreases due to excessive exposure in a
changing weather temperature.
_________ 3. The roots of the tree could penetrate in holes of the rock and could
break it in the long run.
_________ 4. Rocks multiply because they undergo reproduction process just like
human being.
_________ 5. The pieces of boulder turn into soil many years after it was broken
down by several factors.
