the new lesson ✔ Which picture uses farm chemicals?
✔ Which picture uses a food reagent?

A
Ask:
What can you see in the picture?
What chemicals do farmers use in farming?

B
Ask:
What can you see in the picture?
What do we use to improve appearance and taste of food?

Am I a Farm Chemical or a Reagent Food?

Directions: Classify the following substance if it is a Farm Chemical
or Reagent Food.
.

FARM FOOD
CHEMICAL REAGENT

D. Discussing new concepts and

practicing new skills #1. FARM CHEMICALS AND REAGENT FOOD

Farm Chemicals – are the chemicals used in agriculture to control

pests and disease or control and promote growth. Common agricultural
chemicals (agrichemicals) include fuels, solvents, insecticides,
herbicides, fungicides, fertilizers, and veterinary chemicals.

▪ Insecticides – Agents for controlling harmful insects/pests that

damage field crops
▪ Fungicides – agents for controlling diseases that damage field
crops
▪ Insect-Fungicides – agents that simultaneously control harmful
insect pests and diseases that damage field crops
▪ Herbicides – agents for controlling weeds
▪ Rodenticides – agents for controlling rats and other rodents
▪ Plant Growth Regulator – agents to promote or inhibit growth
of field crops
▪ Attractants – agents that attract mainly harmful insect pests by
odor or by other means
▪ Repellents – agents for having repellent action on harmful
mammals and birds that damage field crops
▪ Spreaders – agents that are mixed with other agricultural
chemicals to enhance the adherence of these chemicals.

Reagent Food- these are additives to improve appearance and taste

▪ Color Additives (Food Color) – any dye or pigment or other
substance that can impart color to food.

▪ Taste and Texture Modifiers

1. Flavor Enhancers – used to improve flavor of food or drink
(MSG or Monosodium Glutamate)
Example: magic sarap, aji nomoto

2. Emulsifiers and stabilizers – often added to process foods

to prevent parts from separating
Example: margarine, mayonnaise, low fat ice cream, salad
dressing

Ask:
Can you now classify materials of farm chemicals and reagent food?

E. Discussing new concepts & GROUP ACTIVITY (Station Game)

practicing new skills #2
Put the class in groups of four. Each group will complete the task in
each station. The number of points they receive depends on how well
they finished the task.
.
Station 1: Word Puzzle
Directions: Find and encircle these substances in the word puzzle
below.

Station 2: Identify Me!

Directions: Match the substances to their corresponding use and
definition. Write the letter of your answer on the blank before the
number.
Station 3: Think More!
Directions: Explain the difference between a farm chemical and food
reagent.

F. Developing Mastery
What are the examples of farm chemicals?
Are they all necessary to use?
Why do farmers use farm chemicals?
What are the reagents of food that you use at home?
Can you state it’s beneficial in our daily lives?
G. Finding Practical Applications of
concepts and skills in daily living Do you think it is important to know whether the materials we use like
farm chemicals and food reagents are harmful or useful?
How should we keep these materials at home? Why?

H. Making Generalizations & What have you learned in today’s lesson?

Abstractions about the lesson I learned that farm chemicals are commonly used in farms to
make sure of the proper growth of plants, vegetables, fruits, and
trees while Reagent is a compound or mixture added to a system to
cause a chemical reaction or test if a reaction occurs which may be
used to find out whether a specific chemical substance is present
by causing a reaction to occur with.

I. Evaluating Learning Directions: Write FC if the substance is a Farm Chemical and

RF if the substance is a Reagent Food before each number.

______1. Insecticide
______2. Iodine
______3. Fungicides
______4. Fertilizers
______5. Sodium hydroxide

J. Additional activities for Directions: Read the problem carefully. Write your answer in your
application or remediation assignment notebook.

1. You spend a two-month vacation at your grandparent’s farm. As

you go around with your grandfather, you notice that many pests,
insects, and weeds were found surrounding the vegetable and fruit
plants. What chemical products would you recommend to your
grandfather to help lessen the problem with pests, insects, and
weeds on the farm? Why?
