I. OBJECTIVES

A. Content Standards The learners demonstrate understanding of he relation of

geographical location of the Philippines to its environment

B. Performance The learners should be able to analyze the advantage of the location
Standard of the Philippines in relation to the climate, weather, and seasons

C. Learning MELC
Competencies / Objectives
- Demonstrate how places on Earth may be located using a
coordinate system (7ES-IVa-1)

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

- At the end of the lesson, the learners are able to:

1. use longitude and latitude to locate places on earth (7ES-IVa-

1.1)

II. CONTENT

1. Subject Matter LONGITUDE

IV. PROCEDURES

A. Reviewing previous Let the students recall the lesson last meeting by asking them to
lesson or presenting the complete the table below:
new lesson
LATITUDE NAME

23.5°N

23.5°S

66.5°N

66.5°S

1. Can you still recall the imaginary lines of the globe?

2. Aside from the latitude, what was the other one?

B. Establishing a To establish the importance of longitudes, the students will ask the
purpose of the lesson following questions regarding the importance of latitude:

C. Presenting 1. Can you still the importance of latitudes in locating places on earth?
examples/instances of the
new lesson 2. How about the importance of latitude in determining the climate in
certain parts of the world?

Having learned the importance of latitudes, ask the students the

following questions regarding longitudes:

1. What do you think is the importance of longitudes?

2. Do you think they can also be used to locate places?

D. Discussing new Show the students the following photo and ask the follwoing question
concepts and practicing below:
new skills #1
1. How do you differentiate latitudes from longitudes?

2. What do you call the line that divides the Earth into the eastern and
western hemisphere?

E. Discussing new The teacher will then provide a discussion on the lines of longitudes.
concepts and practicing
new skills #2 Lines which run from north to south are called longitudes. The
longitude which passes through Greenwich, England is called the
prime meridian.

As a reference point, the prime

meridian is read as 0º longitude. The
degree increases as it moves
westward or eastward until it reaches
the longitude opposite to the prime
meridian, the antemeridian (read as
180 º longitudes).

The
prime meridian and antemeridian
divide the globe into its eastern and
western hemispheres. The right side
of the prime meridian is the eastern
hemisphere while the left side is the
western hemisphere.
F. Developing Mastery Activity 1: Find me in the Longitudes!
(Leads to Formative
Assessment) Study the diagram below. Determine the longitude of the identified
points on the globe by indicating the number of degrees the point is
from the prime meridian and its direction E (east) or W (west) from the
prime meridian.

G. Finding practical Activity 2: Where Am I in the Philippines?

applications of concepts
and skills in daily living Using your knowledge in both longitudes and latitudes. Locate the
latitude and the longitude of some areas here in the Philippines using
the points given below on the Philippine Map.
Questions to ponder:

1. How did you locate each of the points from the map of the
Philippines?

2. If a certain place has a latitude of 16°N and a longitude of 121°E, in

which part of the Philippines should you be?

H. Making Let the students complete the following statements:

generalizations and
abstractions about the 1. In this lesson I learned that ____________.

2. It is important to learn about longitudes because ___________.

I. Evaluating learning Direction: Provided are the Longitudes and Latitudes of certain points
in the map of the world. Give the respective point that corresponds to
the given coordinates.
