DROP EVERYTHING AND READ (DEAR) REPORT

March 01, 2024

Grade and Section: Grade 8 Citrine

Total Number of enrolled Learners: 33
Number of students participated: 33
Male: 18 Female: 15

Observations / Impact of the Reading Activity:

This is my initial observation as an adviser of Grade 8, my students who participated in the Catch-up Friday gave
me a glimpse of their reading skills and comprehension and based during the last catch -up Friday there were
some improvements. A total of 5 of my students are slow readers last time was identified but I could see their
improvement and I have concluded that some of the five have showed their improvement in the reading activity,
the 18 students that are labelled as “moderate readers” can read well but sometimes they tend to make
mistakes, most especially from words that are not familiar to then or words that they’ve just .10 of my students
are still proficient readers and they can read very well as was determined during the last catch-up friday, and
can read above average than other students, they moderately read without errors and they utilize pauses when
they encounter comma, colon and period. Overall a Majority of my learners are moderate and proficient in
reading and only five needs to engaged in reading activities and This catch-up Friday is very useful because it
helps us advisers to locate learners that needs attention in reading and therefore, we can help them in the best
way possible.

Best Practices / Strategies:

First thing that I did was I briefed them on what is the purpose of catch up Fridays and gave them insights on
what we will do during our 7:30 to 11:30 Am session. Our first activity was an individual reading where they were
asked to stand up Infront of the class and read a poem which is given to them individually. I downloader 40
poems that has difficult words on it and that technique gave me an insight on how good their reading
comprehension really is. They read poems and I encouraged them to read words even if they don’t know so that
the whole class could correct it. At first, they were hesitant but, as a teacher I Taught the whole class that
mistake is a part of learning and it is better to commit mistakes than to pretend that you know everything and
based from these technique that I employed, I certainly see the differences and from then on their confidence in
reading grew. Second technique that I employed is a game called ‘’ Guess the logo and guess the word by
Emoji’’ where they could compete from other teams because as we all know young learners tend to engage their

selves in games and I utilized and incorporated it with learning. I could see on their faces their laughter and joy
and they beauty of it is that they actually enjoy learning thru playing and this was a good teaching technique
because they all participated without forcing them and according to my learner, they would want to this again.
Third technique that I employed is a group competition called “Spelling Quiz Bee” where their intellectual
activities would be tested. I incorporated this game because as I notice young learners really want competition in
order for them to prove their selves and test their knowledge and skills. They all participated and they all
displayed how aggressive and how competitive they are. Catch-up Fridays is very important and I know that this
step in learning is very important because this gives an opportunity to those students that lacks attention during
their classes and this catch-up Friday is very essential for the improvement of their reading comprehension
skills , their knowledge and most importantly their ability to connect with their class mates, builds relationship and
improve on their own learning.

Attitude / Behavior in Reading:

What I observed at first was some of the learners were shy or frightened to commit mistakes. They are afraid
because their classmates would laugh at them if they commit mistakes in reading. But what I did was I made
them realize that nobody is perfect so and they do not have the right to laugh or to degrade their classmate. I
also encourage my students to read words that they do not know and read a loud so that I would correct them,
this was a great move because they gained their confidence in reading and not afraid to make mistakes and
when they commit mistakes I immediately correct it and taught them on how to read it.

Problems Encountered:

The only problem that I encountered is 5 of my students are slow readers and can’t read very well but I believe
that we can work on that, I can help them develop and I can help them to read. Some of my students are also
bugged by their reading skills at first and they are shy or frightened to commit mistakes but luckily I boosted their
confidence and the end result was, they are not are to make mistakes and when they are not sure with the words
they they are reading, They would asked me instantly for them to correct their selves.

Recommendations:

I recommend that all teachers even me, that we should find new ways or new interactive activities that engage
our learners to participate and to have a joyful learning. Another recommendation that I can share is we should
make our classroom environment more interactive and we should be more understanding to our learners that

can’t read very well and we should encourage every learner that making a mistake is just normal and there is no
need to degrade learners that can’t read very well. We should always remember that managing a classroom
starts in the classroom and with the learners.
