Content Standard:

The learners demonstrate an

understanding of some important
properties of solutions.
Performance Standard:

The learners should be able to

prepare different
concentration of solutions of
mixture according to uses and
availability of materials.
Learning Competency:

Express concentrations of solutions

quantitatively by preparing
different concentrations of
mixtures according to uses and
availability of materials.
Code:

(S7MT-Id-3)
Objective:

At the end of the lesson discussion,

the student should be able to:
a. Analyse the problem given,

The teacher will demonstrate in front of the class the ff. this
procedure:
1. Label the clear, transparent bottles with number 1-4
2. Place one drop of food color in bottle # 1.
3. Add 50 mL. water to the food color in bottle # 1 and stir the
solution.
4. Place 10 drops of food color in bottle # 2.
5. Add 50 mL. water to the food color in bottle # 2 and stir the
solution.
6. Show the class bottles # 1 and # 2 and ask them to differentiate
the two bottles.
The teacher will demonstrate in front of the class the ff. this
procedure:
1. Place one drop of food color in bottle # 3.
2. Add 20 mL. water to the food color in bottle # 3 and stir the
solution.
3. Place one drops of food color in bottle # 4.
4. Add 100 mL. water to the food color in bottle # 4 and stir the
solution.
5. Show the class bottles # 3 and # 4 and ask them to differentiate
the two bottles.
Based on your
observation, How
will you prepare
concentrated
solution?
qualitatively or quantitatively

A concentrated solution is a solution that contains
a large proportion of solute relative to solvent.
A more accurate way of expressing the amount of
solute in a given amount of solvent is in terms of
percentage, morality, molality, normality, parts per
million, and parts per billion. But for today will be
dealing with percentage by mass and volume.
FORMULA
What does 70%
ethyl or
isopropyl alcohol
mean?
*What to do when the mass or
volume of the solvent and solute
are given but not the solution?
*What to do if the mass or
volume of solute is unknown?
Mass or volume of the solution is
unknown?
Therefore, What is the difference
between a concentrated solution
from a diluted solution?
How to solve for the percent by
mass and percent by volume of a
solution?
Answer Key:
1. Given: wt. of solute = 11g
wt. of solution= 80g
Formula: wt./wt. % = [(mass of solute)/(mass of solution)] x 100%
Solution: % by weight= 11 g/80 g x 100
= 0. 1375 X 100
= 13.75 %
2. Given: wt. of solute= 40g
wt. of solution= 40g + 160g= 200g
Formula: wt/wt % = [(mass of solute)/(mass of solution)] x 100%
Solution: % by weight= 40 g/ 200 g x 100
= .20 x 100
3. Given: vol. of solution= 250 mL
vol. of solute= 10 % by volume= (unknown)
Formula: v/v % = vol of solute x 100%
vol of solution vol. of solute = % by vol. x vol. of solution
100
= 10 x 250 mL
100
= 2500 mL
100
= 25 mL
Direction: Solve the following problem in your
notebook.
1. What is the percentage by mass of a sugar
solution prepared by dissolving 40g of sugar in
120g of water?
2. A man drinks 500 mL of an 86 proof wine per
week. What is his total alcohol intake per week?
3. What weight of solute will be required to
produce 400g of a 10% solution? How many mL be
needed?
Answer’s Key:

1. Given: wt. solute= 40g

wt. of solvent= 120g 3. Given: wt. of solution= 400g
Solution: %by wt= % by wt.= 10
wt. of solute . x 100 wt. of solute= (unknown)
wt. of solute + wt. of solvent Solution:
= 40g x 100 %by wt= wt. of solute . x 100
40g + 120g wt. of solute + wt. of solvent
10= wt of solute x 100
= 40g x 100 400g
wt. of solute= 10 (400g)
160g
100
= 0.25 x 100
= 4000g
= 25%
2. Given: proof= 86 100
wt. of volume= 500mL = 40g
vol. of solute= (unknown)
% by volume= (unknown)
Solution:
Proof= 2 (%by volume)
86= 2 (%by volume)
2 2
%by volume= 86
2
= 3
v/v % = vol. of solute x 100%
vol. of solution
43 = vol. of solute x 100%
500
vol. of solute = 43 (500 mL)
100
= 21500 mL
100
= 215 mL
