PURE SUBSTANCE VS

MIXTURE
Pure Substance: Elements and Compounds
Elements are pure substance made up of one kind of
material.

Classification of Elements

• Metals- are used in electrical appliances because they are

good conductors of heat and electricity
- they are malleable
- they can be harmed into thin sheets
- they are ductile or can be drawn into wires
- they are ideal as construction materials for building
bridges and buildings
Examples of Metals
Nonmetals
• It exist in solids, liquids and gases.
• They are usually light in weight
• They are used as insulators because they are
poor conductors of heat and electricity
• They are not ductile, malleable, or strong to
withstand stress and strain
Metalloids
• Are elements that have properties of both metals and
nonmetals
• Metalloids are solid but lack luster

The arrangement of elements is found in the Periodic Table
of Elements.

Compounds
• Are the combination of two or more elements that are
chemically combined.
• Compounds could be written in a chemical formula
• Chemical formula is an arrangements of symbols and
numbers that describe a compound

Kind of Compounds

Acids- are compounds that produce hydrogen ions when

dissolved in water.
Examples: citric acid in calamansi, kamias and green
mango.
Indicator- is a substance that changes color at certain
range of pH values.
In acids, blue litmus paper changes to red when dipped on
it.

Bases- are compounds that produce hydroxide ions when

dissolved in water.
-Bases usually slippery and bitter in taste.
- In bases, a strip of red litmus paper changes to blue
when dipped in it.

Mixtures- is a combination of two or more pure substances

in which pure substance retains its characteristics and
properties.
Heterogeneous mixture
• It is not formally mixed
• In mixture of mud and water, the heavier mud particles
settle near the bottom of the container, so the separation
of the components is seen.

Homogeneous mixture
• Appears one or uniform before your eyes.
• There is the same proportion
