 CÂU ĐƠN
(SIMPLE SENTENCE)
 ĐỊNH NGHĨA

o Câu đơn là câu chỉ gồm một động từ được chia trong câu.
o Câu đơn có thể có cấu trúc như một mệnh đề.

Example:
1. The child is crying.
2. Hurricanes and other tropical storms are both dangerous.
 CÂU GHÉP / CÂU HỢP
(COMPOUND SENTENCE)
 ĐỊNH NGHĨA
o Câu ghép là câu gồm hai hoặc nhiều mệnh đề độc lập được kết nối với
nhau bằng liên từ (and, but, for, nor, or, so, yet…) hoặc bằng một dấu
phẩy hoặc chấm phẩy.

Example:
1. She told a folk-tale and we all listened to her.
2. We moved to Florida in 1978; however, we stayed only five years and
then returned to New York.
o Câu ghép có thể được rút gọn bằng cách bỏ đi chủ ngữ và
trợ động từ (nếu có) trong mệnh đề thứ hai nếu chủ ngữ và
trợ động từ đó giống với mệnh đề thứ nhất.
o Hai mệnh đề của câu ghép đều là mệnh đề độc lập, chúng
vẫn có nghĩa khi đứng riêng.

Example:
1. He is sitting and (he is) listening to me.
 CÂU PHỨC
(COMPLEX SENTENCE)
 ĐỊNH NGHĨA
o Câu phức là câu gồm một mệnh đề chính / mệnh đề độc lập (main clause)
và một hoặc nhiều mệnh đề phụ / mệnh đề phụ thuộc (subordinate clause).
Mệnh đề chính khi đứng riêng thì vẫn có nghĩa, mệnh đề phụ thuộc khi
đứng riêng thì không có nghĩa.

Example:
1. The thief ran away (MC) when he saw a policeman (SC).
2. The little girl who was in the kitchen yesterday (SC) is my younger sister
(MC).
o Mệnh đề phụ thuộc thông thường sẽ được đi kèm với các liên từ phụ thuộc
(because, although, while, after,…) hoặc đại từ quan hệ (which, who, whom,
whose, that…),…

Example:
1. When I came (SC), they were watching the film (MC).
2. We will go out (MC) if the rain stops (SC).

complex?
