Architect Phan Hng Hng 1972, born in Tay Ninh, Vietnam. 1990, started majoring architecture at Ho Chi Minh City School of Architecture. Lib.A Architectural Design Co. Ltd, formerly Lib.A Architectural Studio was found in 1999. Lib.A - Architects has designed a large sum of area of built projects over the last 10 years, mostly in residential and recreation facilities. All things constitute nature. Human is a part of nature. The environment we live in is the balance of the earth and its relation with the universe. As long as we live in this environment, we must be in harmony with it. For thousand years, we have attempted to control everything. We have created numerous artificial structures to satisfy our desire of controlling. Yet, the original balance of nature and nature itself are still undeniable. It is what the true creation has to grasp. So does architecture. It may be inessential for true creation to bring out new and extraordinary things. But it is essential to create things that can express nature truthfully with its full meaning. Nature is not domestic or ornamental.

the soft - cover

Natural skin breathes naturally. Architecture is often split into the natural outside and the artificial inside. In-between these two sides, I use the soft-cover. Filtering nature: Nature is changing continuously and swiftly. Modern human beings are not capable to adapt to that ever changing condition. The soft-cover works as an intermediate to filter nature for us to be in harmony with nature. We have exploited the power of innovation in technology to resist harsh natural condition. It also means that we must consume a huge amount of artificial energy. It leaves a severe consequence. Architecture is no longer in harmony with nature. Energy crisis is irresistible. Although every living entity has to consume energy, exploitation and extravagance are disharmony. The soft-cover is an intermediate between environments. It is diverse and flexible in different situations and density, in plasticity and environment adjustment. The new environment, within the soft-cover which is a part of it, is created as if it is from nature. There is a structure created from the soft-cover. It consumes a minimum amount of energy or even nothing.

the store and void

Observing the infinite universe including galaxies, planets, and dust and also observing our planet earth or an urban area, or a building, I realize that they all are similar. They always include a containing-inside and an infinite-outside at any related places. I call them the store and void. There exist both a force to attract and a force to be attracted. Large entities such as galaxies and planets and tiny things like molecules, atoms are composed by attracting each other and attracting matters to themselves. It is centripetal or self-centered. Also, human beings always attract everything to themselves. Possession and ego represent that phenomenon. The stores and void Structures of cities are composed by a collection of stores and void. A house is similar to a city; it includes a volume containing what is private and personal. The remaining void is very precious. Ironically, because of the increase of possessing, the store is not capable to keep what is personal; things often overflow the store, invade void and take up space. The soft-cover represents relation between the store and void. There is the store in void and void in the store. In between them, it is the soft-cover. We are moving within them. Possession, ego, tradition always conceal potential problems and cause problems. Thus, I keep them inside the store. The store and void.

dissolved form
Form represents existence. Dissolution represents nonexistence. The term dissolved form points out a contradiction: at the moment we create something, we not only face its existence but also its disappearance. To be created and to disappear in the same moment means to be continuously living. As usual, forms and icons come to architects minds at the beginning of the design process. Then, architects devote all their energy to reinforce these forms and icons in order to impressed clients or to claim something. Are we trying to prettify the store and to regularize it at any cost, give it meanings, even praise it as an icon? Our lives have to face too much icons. Yet, once we are aware that we are surrounded, blocked and ruled by the icons we adore, should we still provide life more icons? When void occurs, the store dissolves. I always aspire to a dissolved architecture.

The main space is the reception hall, a glass box surrounded by trees providing both shadow and natural ambience. The soft-cover here is the green, which forms the facades and defines the interior space. The main halls roof is a combination of layers: It is a stylized trees foliage to filter natural light. The hall appears like an internal garden.

Architecture aims to preserve the original wildlife of nature in Da Lat whose character is defined by pine tree forest, grass and flowers. It is the local ecology and the landscape and form of the hilltop. Around the hill, many building have built through time. Thus the existing big trees and natural things of the site are a treasure and preserving them is a must. This value increases gradually as time goes by. Plants and gardens of glossy city landscape style inundate the local environment and spread out rapidly as virus. Although they can be suitable to some contexts, they are still a kind of ostentation. People come here to enjoy a wild natural landscape rather than glossy artificial ones. Creating new landscape: On the exisiting broken site, just the big pine trees and some plants are valuable. Hence, we create a new terrain, more durable and sustainable, on which the wild landscape develops within the existing pine trees. The commission demand for a lot of bedrooms. Thus, it is better to let the rooms dissolve in the landscape. The luxury bungalow and restaurant float on the ground and integrate with the pine trees. The impotance is that the landscape should be wide-open to provide the users broad views. + Layer 1: underground + Layer 2: floating on the ground, opening to landscape. + Layer 3: Bungalows hang on the tree canopy.

Da Lat has an excellent climate and soil where plants and flowers can live strongly. This feature needs to be expressed through the landscape; to let it be within the existing vegetation in a natural way. In accordance with the tradition and the French colonial architecture built here in the Colonial time, because of the cold climate, architecture is often closed to provide both warm and the feeling of warm. It does not express the spirit of the local environment fully and not affirm that architecture here should be closed. Within this special environment, it is necessary to make wide-open architecture. Because of humid climate, it is better to keep low speed wind ventilating around the house to get dry and avoid humidity. Strong and direct sunlight make the spaces wamer, cleaner and more suitable for our activities in this environment.

It is a phenomenon of nature, like a volcano eruption, like a tuxedo, like an earthquake or like a tsunami as if it is a reaction of a thirst. There is a whirlpool pushed up from the bottom of the ocean like an intense volcano eruption. It is ocean water crystal; a vertical water crystal column rises up to the sky as a desire to be free from the earths gravity and to hang in the air without any resistance. The water column congeals into pure glass. Views from the bedrooms, the apartments, the offices, the main hall and the roof top pool are wide-open to the whole scene of Nha Trang bay. Glass dominates the faade that is created naturally as the creation of natural stone. All the bedrooms face the sea through glass frames composed by different kinds of glass according to direction of the sun and winds. Transparent glass is to maintain views and good sunlight while blurring and colored ones protect users from bad sunlight and undesirable views. Architecture is created to dissolve in the sky rather than to become a landmark. It appreciates the citys landscape and the beautiful beach.

Cam Ranh landscape has a precious wild scene with sand dunes, long beach and the typical botany of the Middle of Viet Nam, dominated by bushes and small desert trees. It is a must to grasp the wildness of this barren sandy landscape. The new architectural entity is introduced to the landscape with an intention to emphasize the natural sandy terrain while preserving the local wild botany. The hotel building appears as large sand dunes. Its immense masses are alleviated by continuously connecting to the natural sand dunes through numerous half-natural sand dunes containing luxurious villas. The grand hall is cave-like, a tropical forest oasis with large water surface; dissolves in the sandy landscape. The villas are like niches in the sand dunes to maintain the users privacy and views. Interior of the hotel and villas are cave-like shelters fromthe desert sandstorm. Additional plants must be chosenbased on natural local botany and suitable tosandy soil. The wildness of the site are considered as the most important factor to predominate over other aspects of the design.

The development area is approximately 15 km from the city center of Ho Chi Minh City. The site is recently disconnected from the central development areas, but it intent to be a new entertainment destination. Its a part of a wider area along the riverside with other residential, commercial, cultural developments. Its geological setting with the river connection define a new exciting theme for a new, attractive destination. The development will be a Cultural Park and Yacht Port in Bo Bang, Ward Phu Xuan, Nha Be District, Ho Chi Minh City. The report describes the site vision and development plan for the 27 hectare urban land. The scope is Master Planning Concept Design. The proposed mixed use development contains Cultural, Retail, Hospitality Recreation and Residential components. The development program is defining new, high quality exclusive and public facilities. The entertainment park on the North, close to the new Town Hall is accessible for public providing different landscaped theme parks. The quiet river stream on the South is an excellent setting for an unique gateway with a new Port Marina. Between this two new urban hub area two unique destination will be built; the Cultural Center and The Yacht Sport Entertainment Complex. The river as a monumental element marina and park an active fresh landscape like the place to be when it is too hot in Ho Chi Minh City. The main idea is to combine water surface, plants and trees to create fresh climate, shadow corridors, resting and circulation spaces. Buildings in contact with green parks and water represent Modern Architecture.

Program

When thinking about spaces of religious worship, we usually imagine spaces rich in icons and ornamentation. Also, the traditional spaces of Catholicism worship are tendentiously separate from the outside to maintain a solemn environment for the rites. On the contrary, the large pilgrimages always contain the atmosphere of the crowds which are continuously changing and easily render into negation. The consequent results are the chaotic atmosphere and spaces for daily needs of the pilgrims. However, the crowds are always open, welcome and absorbent. Two action programs, two contrary characteristic spaces need to be unified and absorb each other.

Site

La Vang is a small area located in Quang Tri, a province in central Vietnam. Quang Tri bears the harshest weather in Vietnam with hot and dry wind from the west and storms from the East Sea. Besides, since the whole province was the buffer zone where Vietnam was split into two parts during the Vietnam War, it was the most damaged place to suffer from the fierce front. There was a story about the apparitions of Mother Mary at this place 200 years ago to save Vietnamese Christians when they were chased and executed by the governor. Eventually, the place was acclaimed to be the Holy Land and its church was raised to be one of the five Cathedral Basilicas of Vietnam in 1961 before it was damaged by the war. The task is to design a pilgrimage center that includes a plaza for 100.000 people, a 5000-seat cathedral basilica, a 3000-seat conference hall, an international conference center, a meditation center, a gallery, an administration building and some other buildings serving the pilgrims whose number is predicted to rise up to one million in each triennial pilgrimage season (the record number of the last season was nearly six hundred thousand). The client wanted to develop the area within two decades and asked for a layout that would allow an easy development taking place in the future. The Cathedral Basilica which is the most important building will be designed and constructed in the first phase. Furthermore, the ruin bell-tower, the holy well and the concrete banyan tree marks the apparition place will be preserved and restored as a lively remnant of the apparition of the Holy Mary in La Vang and the seed of hope She has planted in the pilgrims soul.

Solution

The main concept is to re-create the original woods where the Holy Mary appeared. The Cathedral is also conceived as an artificial wood. This original concept of the wood aims to create an uninterrupted and undirected space that allows people to draw their own paths within the Only Path of the Faith. The cathedral is an open structure that helps render the solemn atmosphere inside to outside and render people from outside to inside. At this point, the elements of traditional architecture, roofs, columns and verandas can make it possible. No traditional image, ornament or technique is kept in this design except these three fundamental elements which maintain not only the basic need of cover and protection but also provide a soft cover allowing absorbance between inside and outside. This kind of traditional structure keeps everything both open and close, improves the micro-climate inside and helps save energy. The wood, especially the entrance garden, simultaneously plays a role as a memorial without any monument. This spatial memorial does not introduce the pilgrims any preorganized path but leaves them undirected. Thus this experience of getting through a wood mentally and physically reminds the pilgrims their ancestor who lived and died bravely to protect their Faith. Yet the vision of the Tower of Light (the bell-tower) which represents Jesus Christ gives them the only visual direction to follow. The project is conceived and designed with an attempt to reduce the feeling of icons as much as possible. Individuals who use the buildings and enjoy the landscape are leave to be free to make spaces their own place and easily make connection to themselves, to others, to the buildings, to nature and to the Eternal. Architecture becomes intermediate.

The building is located in the North Hanoi Highway Planning Project surrounded by Saigon River. The whole area is in the middle of District 2 and planned for luxurious housing and recreational facilities. The projects insistence is to meet both economic and aesthetic aspect. The task includes two-storey car park, a luxurious spa and fifty six luxurious apartments for single people and small families. Experience of living in high rise apartment buildings is unfriendly and unpleasant because of the feeling of being separate from the outside, being imprisoned in our own place by mean of the buildings walls and windows cover and floors. That also means we lose communication with nature. We are disconnected. In high rise building, floors are inevitable. Thus, it seems that the cover is the only possible element to help people connect to nature. As usual, high rise buildings covers give us safety from winds, sunlight, rains and from falling out of buildings. In this case, we try to provide the building a soft cover to substitute the walls and windows covers which represent division whilst maintaining the original functions of covers. The most noticeable aspect of the soft cover is that it can absorb changing nature

selectively by including layers of many kinds of porous wall, glass, louver and curtain. The flexibility of the soft cover provides people inside the most possibility to choose to be separate totally from outside or open to it, to control sunlight, winds and whether to let the rain come in or not. Eventually, the apartments are not a sum of functions and insensible spaces anymore. They become lively entity embracing our activities. Simultaneously, within our motion, they come to life as real organic entities and help us reconnect to nature. We find the way back to our lost communication.
