How to write letters in English?

Останнє завдання №59 спрямовано саме на написання листів. У цьому конспекті ми з
вами детально розберемо усі тонкощі, конструкції та типи листів, які зустрічаються на
зовнішньому незалежному оцінюванні з англійської мови. А також розглянемо
приклади таких творів 

Типи листів та їх особливості

Листи умовно поділяють на 2 типи: офіційні та неофіційні.
1) Офіційні
До офіційних листів належать a letter of complaint (лист-скарга), a letter of application
(лист-заява) та a letter of enquiry (лист-запит).
По-перше, будь-який лист починається зі звертання, тому в офіційному листі ми
можемо використовувати наступні фрази:
Dear Sir or Madam – пишемо тоді, якщо не знаємо до якої людини звертаємося,
буквально ця фраза перекладається як «шановна пані або панове»
Dear Mr. John – дорогий містер Джон

Dear Mrs. Alexandra – дорога місіс Олександра – «Mrs.» використовується тоді, коли
ви впевнені на 100%, що жінка заміжня
Dear Ms. Alexandra – а варіант «Ms.» використовується у тому випадку, якщо жінка
самотня або ж ви не знаєте про її сімейний стан.
Перший абзац.
У першому абзаці вам треба вказати мету вашого листа, а саме ви можете
використовувати такі шаблонні фрази:
I read your advertisement in … – Я прочитав вашу рекламу в …

I am writing to enquire about … – Я пишу, щоб дізнатися…
I would like to apply for a job as … – Я хотів би подати заявку на роботу в якості …
I am writing to apply for … – Я пишу, щоб подати заявку на …

Другий абзац.
У другому абзаці ви розкриваєте запропоновану вам тему, а саме розписуєте все по

пунктах, які зазначені у темі листа. Тут умикайте фантазію на повну, однак, не
забувайте про граматику 
Раджу на один такий пункт написати мінімум 3-4 речення, аби ви змогли набрати 100
слів у своєму листі, бо інакше вашу роботу перевіряти не будуть.
За бажанням ви можете або виділяти окремий абзац на кожен пункт (у цьому
випадку у вас повинно бути мінімум 4 речення в абзаці), або ж написати усі три
пункти (зазвичай, саме така кількість у завданні) в одному абзаці. Також не забувайте
використовувати слова-зв’язки, аби надати вашому твору логічність та послідовність.
Аби показати, що ваша мова не є примітивною, використовуйте більш складні
граматичні конструкції та слова. Намагайтеся максимально використовувати свій
словниковий запас. Пам’ятайте про те, що екзаменатори звертають на це значну
увагу.

Заключний абзац.
Тут буде достатньо одного або двох речень, наприклад:
I look forward to your reply… – З нетерпінням чекаю на вашу відповідь …

Please respond at your earliest convenience. – Будьте ласкаві, напишіть відповідь, як
тільки з’явиться можливість.
I should also remind you that the next meeting is on February 5th. – Також повинен вам
нагадати, що наступна зустріч відбудеться 5-го Лютого.
For futher details …– Щоб уточнити деталі …
If you require more information …– Якщо вам потрібна додаткова інформація …
Thank you for taking it into consideration. – Спасибі за те, що взяли це до уваги.

Чого не можна писати в офіційних листах?
1. НЕ МОЖНА використовувати скорочення: I’m writing to …

Замість цього пишіть повністю: I am writing to …
2. НЕ МОЖНА використовувати сленг: kinda, gonna, wanna
Замість цього: kind of, to be going to, want to.

2) Неофіційні
Тут все набагато простіше, аніж у попередньому випадку.
Неофіційний лист – це лист другу  Структура по суті така ж сама, але стиль листа
вже інший.
Звертання.
Dear Mary, – дорога Мері

Dearest Mary, – найдорожча Мері
My dear friend – мій дорогий друг
Hi Mary, – привіт, Мері
Перший абзац.
Як правило, спочатку йдуть запитання до людини, якій адресується лист: «How are
you?», «How is your family?», «How were your exams?» тощо, аж тільки потім йде
викладення подій, які пережив той, хто пише лист. Окрім цього, у кінці цього абзацу
можуть бути додаткові питання, пов’язані зі змістом листа. Загалом цей абзац
повинен містити 2-3 речення. Далі ви можете побачити фрази, які можна
використати в першому абзаці:
Thanks for your letter/e-mail. – Дякую за твій лист/е-мейл.

It was great to get your letter/e-mail. – Було приємно отримати твій лист/ е-мейл.
Sorry I haven’t written for so long but ... – Вибач за те, що так довго не писав, але …
It was really nice to read about … – Мені було дуже приємно читати про …
Thanks for your letter. It was great/lovely to hear from you. – Дякую за твій лист. Було

Другий абзац.
Так само, як і в офіційному листі, тут треба розписати запропоновану тему. Правила
такі самі, 3-5 речень на один пункт, однак, тут ви спокійно можете застосовувати
скорочення, фразові дієслова, ідіоми тощо. Але сленг вживати тут не бажано, адже
це все ж таки екзамен, тому за це можуть знизити бали. Ну і далі фрази, які ви
можете використовувати у цій частині ;)
You are asking me about … – Ти питаєш мене про …
As for your question , … – Що стосується твого питання, то …
You want to know what … – Ти хочеш знати, що …
You’re interested in … – Ти цікавився …
I’d like to tell you that …– Я хочу тобі сказати, що …
Many things have happened recently. – Багато чого відбулося останнім часом.
There is a lot to share with you. – Я маю багато чого, чим можу поділитися з тобою.
Заключний абзац.
Коли ви вже розповіли другові усе, про що вас просили у завданні, вам залишилося
тільки зробити, висновок усього вище зазначеного. 1-2 речення буде цілком
достатньо. Фрази, які ви можете використати, зазначені нижче:
Well, got to go now. – Мабуть, на цьому все.
I must finish my letter because … – Я повинен завершувати свій лист, так як …
Give my best regards to your family! – Передавай своїй сім’ї мій полум’яний привіт!
Looking forward to hearing from you! – З нетерпінням чекаю на твою відповідь!
Don’t forget to write! – Не забувай писати!
I can’t wait to hear from you! – Чекаю не дочекаюся твоєї відповіді!
Drop me a line when you are free. – Напиши пару рядків, коли будеш вільний.

Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to enquire about your English course that will take place in London next
summer. I would be grateful if you could give me more information about it.
Firstly, I would like to know what I should do in order to participate in this program. Do I
need to send my documents on your e-mail or should I call you and provide all the
information you need to know about me? In addition, I would appreciate if you could
tell me if there is my medical certificate needed.
Moreover, I would like to express my interest in the price of this two-week course. Is
there any discount for people with disabilities? If it is, please let me know. Also I would
like to know the payment details. Do I have to pay for the whole course in advance or I
could pay a half in the beginning and the rest after the course is finished.
Lastly, it would be good if you could give information about the accommodation. Do the
participants live in a hotel or in a camp? Is the place of residence far from the city center
and if it is, how can I get there? Are there any food shops located near the place?

2. Some days ago you ordered a yellow woolen sweater, large size, and light blue jeans,
medium size, in an Internet shop; however, when you got your order, you found out
that there was a red woolen sweater, medium size, and light blue jeans, large size.
Write a letter of complaint to the manager of the shop:
 say why you are writing;
 complain about the order;
 mention that you are extremely disappointed as you wanted to take those things on
holiday with you;
 ask for replacement of the items or a full refund.
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with the clothes I ordered from your Internet
shop a week ago.
To start with, yesterday I eventually received my parcel. When I opened the box and
took out the clothes, I was unpleasantly surprised by what I saw. The sweater was
medium size and red and the jeans were large size. However, I ordered a yellow
sweater, large size and light blue jeans medium size.
In addition, tomorrow I am leaving for holiday and I planned to take all these dressings
but, unfortunately, I will not be able to do it. So, I must say I am extremely upset with
this situation. Everything I can do now is just to hope that the weather will be fine and I
will not need to wear warm clothes.
Thus, I would be grateful if you could replace the items as soon as possible. I hope you
will take this case into consideration and solve this problem.

them. Moreover, it is fascinating that every morning you have programs that are
dedicated to physical exercises. Nowadays it is quite important to stay fit. In addition, I
want to express my excitement about the science programs, which are on your TV
channel every day.
However, I also would like to say, that there are too many commercials, which is not
that attractive for potential viewers. Also some programs display on TV too often and
that is why there is sometimes a desire to switch to another channel.
Hence, I have some suggestions for you. It would be great if there were an opportunity
to conduct some polls among the viewers and ask their opinion about the channel.
Furthermore, you could sometimes arrange some art contests for children and
teenagers, of course, with the main prize.

4. You visited restaurant yesterday, but you were not pleased with the service. Write the
letter of complaint to the chief manager of this restaurant. Include the following points:
 the waiters were very slow and rude.

Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to complain about your service. Yesterday I visited your restaurant and I
would like to express some remarks.
In the first place, I would like to notice about the work of your stuff. I had to wait an
hour before my meal was served. When I asked a waiter about the duration of the
cooking, he replied that he had no idea. In half an hour I decided to ask him again,
however, he replied me with irritability that it was not his problem again.
Next, when my pasta was finally served, it appeared to be too salty. I got impression
that the chief put half a kilo of salt in it. I called a waiter and politely asked him to solve
this problem. He took my plate and did not come back. After fifteen minutes of
waiting, he approached my table and brought me a pizza. When I tasted it I
understood it was cold and had no flavor at all. Nevertheless, I was more upset when I
saw the bill, because there I found a large sum of money I had to pay.
As a conclusion, I have to say I will never visit your restaurant again. I hope you will
consider my letter in further work.

Due to the fact, that I am not busy with studying anymore, I want to invite you to visit
my hometown! There is one fascinating place I want to tell you about. It is a cozy small
café located in the city center. I always prefer visiting it with my family. There are
plenty of delicious dishes on the menu, to be honest, I have almost tried everything!
My favorite is a piece of cake with blueberries because when you put it in your mouth,
it starts to melt immediately. Unforgettable experience! In addition, there is an
amazing atmosphere. Every time I come here, I can listen to stunning live piano
playing, and it makes you feel drowned into the 18th century. Its design is also perfect.
The café has loads of paintings on the walls and books, which you can read, on the
shelves. If you feel freezing, you can even take a blanket, isn’t it amazing?
Furthermore, they have a discount program, which allows you to save your money if
you are a regular client.
As you might have already understood, I yearn to visit this café with you! So please
think about my proposal as quickly as possible and let me know about your decision!
Moreover, I also have some ideas about how we could spend this day together. After
visiting the café, we could go for a walk in the park, which is not far from the center.
There is a beautiful tiny lake with 2 swans, you even can feed them! Then we also
could go to the cinema and watch something interesting, if you’d like of course!
I hope I have intrigued you at least a little bit and you will come to a conclusion to

How are you going?

I’m writing to share with you some fantastic news! This week I’ve participated in the
TV quiz show “Around the World” and I have won two tickets for a trip in my country!
As you might have already understood, I want you to come with me!
And now I want to tell you a bit about the journey. You might ask me where we will
live during our small adventure. So, here is the answer: the agency, which have
provided this journey, have already booked rooms in hotels in the cities we will visit.
So, there is nothing to worry about.
During this journey, we will visit many exciting places! Two of them are Synevir lake
and Lviv. Have you ever been there, by the way? Synevir lake is located in the
Carpathians. There you will be able to see some fantastic views and incredible nature.
The air is fresh and clear, the people are kind and gorgeous. It’s definitely worth
visiting it! Regarding Lviv there is a lot to discover there. Ancient monuments and
buildings, stunning architecture and, of course, delicious cuisine.
Don’t forget to take personal belongings, warm clothes and, of course, your
documents and money. Otherwise, we will have some troubles.

7. You have recently come home from your holiday. Write a letter to your friend in which

Dear John,
Thank you for your letter! It was nice to hear from you again! You want to know how I
spent the summer. Well, i’ll do my best to your answer questions.
I spent my summer vacation really well. In June I went to my grandparents’ house. They
live in Lviv. I have many friends in this city, so I had a good time with them. We went to
a forest camp, which is located not far from Lviv. We were there for three weeks, and it
was very fun. We lived near a large lake. Every time when the weather was fine, we
walked to the shore and swam in the lake. Also we fished, went hiking, picked
mushrooms and berries. We had English lessons too.
Then we returned to Lviv and every day played basketball, went to the cinema and
danced in the evening. Sometimes we visited museums and zoos too. In August I had to
go home. Next summer i’ll definitely go to Lviv again because I do miss my friends.
When I returned home I found out that my father bought tickets to London for all our
family! It was a surprise for me! I was on the cloud nine at that moment! So, in a few
days we went to England. I have got many impressions from this trip. England is such a
fascinating and bright country! And there are so many green meadows and fields here.
As for London, I am very impressed by the beauty of this city. We have visited many
famous places: the Trafalgar Square, the Tower Bridge, the Westminster Abbey, the
museum of Madame Tussauds, the London Eye, the Piccadilly Circus and many others.
So, it was the best summer in my life! And what about you? Tell me how you spent your

I am really glad that you have agreed to come to Ukraine. I am sure you will like
spending time here in my country.
I strongly advise you to buy your flight tickets for the spring season. You also should
purchase them in advance. the weather is nice in this period of the year. It is not is that
cold but it is not too hot yet.
However, I do recommend you to take warm clothes because, as you know, the weather
is unpredictable.
There are a great deal of sites and places in my city. First of all, we need to visit the
historical museum. There you will find out many amazing facts about the city. After that,
we must go to the center of the town where you will also see loads of stunning
monuments. In addition, we should also take a short trip to the one of the most popular
lakes in my region. It has just fascinating flora and fauna. You will not regret visiting it.
Moreover, in order to stay fit and active during your visit it would be good to go to go
jogging every morning and play volleyball or football in the evenings. Also we could go
kayaking which is also amazing way of keeping yourself fit. If you have any other ideas,
