INTRODUCTION
The jacket is provided with a leg protector member of diameter 508mm and 25mm thickness positioned at
at an extended distance of 1.5m from the jacket. In this sheet the maximum impact load that can be taken
by the leg protector is estimated. The load is considered at one third length between the supports of the
vertical post.
2. DESIGN ASSUMPTIONS
2.1 The leg protectors are checked using MATHCAD spreadsheet for the local stress caused by in-service
loading.
2.2 Design checks are performed according to AISC - Specification for Structural Steel Buildings, Allowable
Stress Design

The vessel impact is at one-third height of the post. Since the leg protector is replacable, it can be
designed to the full yield strength.
The impact force can be back calculated based on the fact that the the impact is at 1/3 rd height of the
post and assuming the member fails by bending

5. CONCLUSION
The maximum impact load that can be taken by the leg protector was found to be 835kN.
