1 Scope
1.1 This Standard specifies the minimum design requirements for wind and earthquake loadings to be
imposed on buildings, equipment, vessels, structures and their foundations.
1.2 All design criteria developed by any Seller, Consultant or Contractor shall be reviewed by CLIENT
and approved prior to commencement of the supplier's design.
2 References
Design loads shall be in accordance with the latest revisions of the following Standards and Codes
of Practice. In the event of any conflict the Contractor shall seek clarification from CLIENT before
proceeding.
2.1 Project Specific Standards

1182001 Design Loading for Building & Equipment Structure

1182002 Wind and Earth Quake Loading
1182003 Design of Concrete Foundations, Structures and Paving

2.2 National Standard

BCV The Building Code of Vietnam (Vols. 1, 2 and 3)
TCVN 4088-97 Climatologically data used in construction Designing
TCVN 2737-95 Loads & Impact
TCVN 9386: 2012 Design of Structures for Earthquake resistance
2.3 International Standard
ACI Standards American Concrete Institute
British Standards Code of Practice
ASCE American Society of Civil Engineers - Minimum Design Loads for
Buildings and Other Structures
3 Wind Loading
3.1 Wind loads
Wind loads shall be determined based upon: -
TCVN 4088-97 Climatologically data used in construction
TCVN 2737-95 Load and impact
ASCE American Society of Civil Engineers - Minimum Design Loads for
Buildings and Other Structures
3.2 Wind loads for Building
The wind loads for building which is subjected to BCV regulation shall be design in accordance with
the TCVN 2737–95 based upon a Wo of 83 daN/m2 as defined in Appendix 1.
3.3 Wind loads for equipment, vessels, structures and their foundations
The wind loads for equipment, vessels, structures and their foundations which are not subjected to
BCV regulation shall be design in accordance with the ASCE 7-05 based on the 37m/sec of basic
wind speed(3 secs gust).

3.4 Deflections
The maximum allowable deflection for wind design including load factor of load combination as
TCVN (or ASCE 7-05), shall be in accordance with the deflection limits in clause 5.5 of Project
Standard 1182016. Deflections due to vortex shedding shall not exceed a single amplitude of 1
horizontal per 400 vertical for wind less than or equal to the design velocity. Fatigue loading shall
be considered for equipment and structures subject to vortex-excited vibrations.
3.5 Dynamic Effects
Structures such as but not limited to, heater stacks, chimneys and tall towers may be sensitive to
wind gust effects and/or vibrations due to vortex shedding. All such dynamic effects shall be fully
considered in assessing wind loads.
4 Earthquake Loads
4.1 Earthquake loading shall be based upon the criteria given in TCVN 9386: 2012: Design of Structure
for Earthquake Resistance.
4.2 The dynamic analysis for earthquake load shall be in accordance with TCVN 9386: 2012, if
required.

APPENDIX 1
WIND LOAD AS TCVN 2737- 95

The following effective velocity pressure, Wo will be use for calculation of wind loads
on Building Structure

W = Wo x k x c x S ----- (section 6.3 & 6.9)

W : Wind Force
Wo : Wind Velocity Pressure (N/m2, 83 daN/m2 = 0.83 kN/m2)
k : Factor of wind pressure variation with height ------ (Table 5)
c : aerodynamic factor ----- (Table 6)
S : Area of horizontal projection

APPENDIX 2
EARTHQUAKE/SEISMIC LOAD AS TCVN 9386: 2012

Seismic loading will be as per TCVN 9386: 2012 which has been adopted from Eurocode 8. The building will
be analysed using the dynamic analysis procedures as recommended by the code
The following parameters have been used for defined seismic loading:
Location, Ground type, Ground acceleration agR
Importance factor

Design acceleration

Viscous damping ratio: 5%

Damping correction factor:  = 1

Behaviour factor:

- For horizontal design response spectrum q = 3.5

- For vertical design response spectrum q = 1.5

Lower bound factor:  = 0.2

In accordance with TCVN 9386:2012, in District 09 – Hồ Chí Minh City, the seismic zone acceleration agR=
0.0747g and as this value does not exceed 0.08 the building don’t need to be designed to resist
seismic loadings.
