Subject: Physical Science Grade Level: 9
I. Topic & General Goal Covalent bonds
II. Reference to PA or Standard - 3.2.10.A2
Common Core Compare and contrast different bond types that result in the
Standards formation of molecules and compounds.
Explain why compounds are composed of integer ratios
of elements.

III. Lesson Objectives The students will be able to…

Define covalent bonds.
Define the difference between covalent and ionic bonds.
Distinguish how many atoms are in each molecular compound.
IV. Materials PowerPoint, handout, pen or pencil
V. A. Introduction The students will begin by asking any questions they have from
their ionic bonds test. Once they are satisfied, they will hand
them back and the lesson will start.
B. Procedures The students will fill in the blanks on the notes until all of 8.1 is
finished. They will be asked questions periodically about the
number of diatomic molecules.
C. Differentiation The content will be differentiated by having it read aloud and the
slides in front of the students. Period 9 will have more time to ask
questions and the slides will be slowed down, so they understand
it more.
D. Closure The students will be asked the difference between ionic and
covalent bonds.
VI. Assessment The students will be informally assessed by asking each
individual a small question about the number of atoms in a
compound or the compound itself to check for understanding.
VII. Modifications and/or One student in 8th period will get modified notes while 6 will get
Accommodations them in 9th period.
