B. Analysis:

C. Abstraction/Generalization:
Tap Dance
Tap dance is a step tapped out audibly by means of shoes with hard soles and heels to which taps have
been added. In the 1920s, taps, which were usually made of metals, were nailed or screwed on the heels
and toe soles. It was also during this time that entire chorus lines on stage shows, such as “Shuffle Along,”
were all wearing tap shoes. Their dance was later known as tap dancing.

History
Tap dancing started in the United States. The moves were a combination of several percussive ethnic
dances. Its influences include African tribal dances. Scottish, Irish, and English clog dances, hornpipes, and
jigs.
During the late 1800s, dance competitions were the popular form of entertainment. Also known as
“cutting contests,” these events became breeding ground for new talents. One such contest took place in
1844 between Afro-American dancer William Henry Lane, also known as “Mater Juba” and Irish performer
John “Jack” Diamond.
