Celebrating National Ag Week March 20-26

It was 9:00 this morning at mile marker 12 on Highway 117 between Nashua
and Fort Peck, and the sun was burning the fog off that had settled in along the
Milk River bottom. It was quite a view with lots of mama cows and their babies
as Lauckner Ranch is in full swing with calving season. Agriculture provides
almost everything we eat, use and wear on a daily basis. But too few people
truly understand this contribution (although this may not necessarily be the case
here in eastern Montana). Each American farmer feeds more than 165 people
... a dramatic increase from 25 people in the 1960s. Quite simply, American
agriculture is doing more - and doing it better. As the world population soars,
there is an even greater demand for the food and fiber produced in the United
States. There are more than 27,000 working farms and ranches in Montana, the
state’s #1 industry Sunday, March 20th was proclaimed “Montana Meat Day” by
Governor Greg Gianforte, so in case you missed it, be certain to make National
Ag Day — Tuesday, March 22nd — your Montana Meat Day!

Record-Setting $1.2 Million Oil
And Gas Lease Sale announced
Along with the Montana Department of Natural
Resources and Conservation (DNRC), Governor Greg
Gianforte today announced a record-setting oil and gas
lease sale on state trust lands, netting $1,187,194 from
the first quarter of 2022.
“Ramping up American-made energy in Montana
is one of many ways to reduce our reliance on foreign
energy sources,” Gov. Gianforte said. “Additionally,
proceeds from these oil and gas lease sales will benefit
our schools, ensuring our kids have access to the best
education possible.”
Approved by the State Board of Land Commissioners
this morning, this sale represents the most revenue from
a sale since 2014.
It also ranks as the seventh highest average bid
price per acre in the history of oil and gas lease sales on
state trust lands.
The first quarter sale included 36 tracts in Daniels,
Phillips, Roosevelt, Rosebud, Toole, and Valley counties.
The record-setting sale and number of bids can be
attributed to holding the lease sale for the first time in an
online auction format through EnergyNet.
Modernizing state government to better serve
Montanans and responsibly developing Montana’s
abundant natural resources are among the governor’s top
priorities which he outlined in his Montana Comeback
Plan.
“Our Trust Lands Management Division took
to heart Governor Gianforte’s goal to reduce red tape
across state government. Moving sales to an online
format allows more bidders to participate in auctions,
increasing competition and bid amounts,” DNRC
Director Amanda Kaster said.
Funds generated by leases on state trust lands
contribute to the education fund for the state. Oil and
gas leases are comprised of a set annual leasing fee per
acre, plus a one-time competitive bid, known as the
bonus amount. If the leases are developed and produce
oil, they generate additional royalty revenues.
DNRC manages state trust lands, including the
auction of oil and gas leases. The next oil and gas lease
sale taking place in June has 179 nominated tracts.

Butte Is Back!
Aaron Flint did his St. Patrick’s Day statewide radio show, Montana
Talks, from The Richest Hill Casino & Lounge in Butte, America.
An Army Ranger friend of his and his wife were out at the Helsinki
in Butte for the big celebrations that always start the night before
St. Patrick’s Day and they sent him a note saying, “Butte is back!
Fantastic to see all these people out.” While the turnout for this
year’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Butte was certainly lighter than
previous years Aaron has attended, he says it was still great to be
in Uptown Butte. It’s an election year, so you know you’re going
to see the political campaigns with a presence in the parade. This
year, the Western Congressional District was the big focus. On the

Remembering the old 3C

How many sports fans remember the old District
3C? Not many will remember unless you’re 60 years
or older or like to research things like this like I do.
Actually, I remember the old District 3C from
articles in the Glasgow Courier. I think it was 1971
or 72 that Glasgow hosted the 3C tournament. Some
time when I can get it done I’ll have to do a history
piece of the 3C.
The old 3C had a couple teams that are no longer
with the district. One was Turner, who is a member
of the 10C now. The other was Hogeland, who has
shut their doors and sends the students to Turner.
The rest of the 3C included Dodson, Saco,
Whitewater, Hinsdale and Frazer. Frazer dominated
the conference at that time. Bert Murdock, a legendary
coach for the Bearcubs, had a player by the name of
Roger White. White could shoot from anywhere once
he crossed that 10-second line. If the three-point shot
would have been in at that time White would be in
the record books.
Frazer never had anyone taller than 6-foot. But
the Bearcubs played bigger than that. They made it to
the State Class C tournament. Back then the State C
was held at Carroll College in Helena every year, from
1970-79. Helena put on a good tournament..Each
team that was lucky enough to make the tournament
had a high school girl that was named queen for the
tournament. Of course, each queen had an escort,
who would be a prominent businessman in Helena.
Frazer lost out in three games after opening with
a 83-56 win over Bridger. White scored 24 points in a
65-58 loss to Manhattan Christian. Randy Selvig had
30 in Outlook’s 56-46 win over Frazer in a Saturday
morning loser out game.
Murdock had his Bearcubs back to the big dance a
year later where Frazer finished fourth. Frazer played
Twin Bridges twice in the tournament. The Bearcubs
beat the Falcons 75-69 in the opening round, but lost
to them, 110-72, in the consolation game. Larry Pyle
was one of the leaders on the Frazer squad.
Saco was also dominant in the 70s. The Panthers
played for the 1971 state championship, losing to
Busby 65-64. Randy Tollefson led Saco, scoring 75
points in three games. He had 21 against Busby. Saco
beat Phillipsburg, 74-70, and Hingham, 54-50.
Another team that stands out from the 1970s
is Flaxville and Kevin Hatfield. At that time it
was Hatfield against the Puckett’s. Twins Joe and
Jon Puckett led Peerless to the 1979 State Class C
tournament in Helena. Hatfield led Flaxville to a 66-
50 win over the Panthers for the state championship.
The 6-foot-7 post scored 24 points for the Cardinals.
He earned MVP honors at state as a freshman in 1976
when Flaxville beat Columbus 53-49 for the crown..
He repeated the feat three years later as a senior when
he led Flaxville to the crown over Peerless. Hatfield
pulled down 1,320 rebounds, which ranks him third.
Flaxville finished Hatfield’s senior season with
a 22-7 record. Three of the losses were to Peerless,
which finished with a 23-5 record.Jon Puckett had 21
points and Joe Puckett 20 in a 53-51 win over Wibaux
for third place in 1978.
Hatfield played at Westmont College in
California. He played 22 games at Westmont as
a freshman, hit 63 percent of his free throws and
scored 62 points. Hatfield was coached by the late
Terry Bakken (1948-2019) in high school. Bakken
also coached at Antelope.
Medicine Lake may not have won a state
championship back in the 70s but the Honkers did
have a big guy that was hard to stop. Bruce Smith, a
Dagmar resident, a scoring machine for the Honker.
The 6-foot-10 center earned All-State honors as
a senior in 1973. He earned a spot on the Class
A-B all-star team. After high school he played for
Montana State, grabbing 23 rebounds in a game with
the freshman team. Smith would start at center his
junior and senior seasons. He played professional
ball in France. He returned to MSU to earn a master’s
degree in business administration and would become
an extension agent in Eastern Montana.
Outlook, which had the famed Selvig brothers, Robin,
Dave, Randy, and Doug, won the title in 1978 with a
55-51 win over Manhattan Christian. Dave and Doug
Selvig played in that game.
Allen Neilsen led Westby to a 65-45 win over
Antelope for the 1975 championship. Neilsen scored
95 points in three games and was the MVP. Antelope
finished the season with six losses, all to Westby.
How many remember the 1999 state C Champions
in girls’ basketball. There’s a little community that is
located between Circle and Sidney. Richey, a farming
community, were led by DeLayne Johnson and
Robyne Milne as the Royals whipped Reed Point 64-
34. Johnson scored 22 points and not too far behind
was Milne with 21.
