Project Duration
The project will commence on March 21, 2022 and it will end on April 20, 2022. For
the first week, it will be for planning & research and the second week will be for discussions,
adjustments, & finalizations. Third week is the Midterms exam. The fourth week is for
advertising or inviting volunteers and purchasing materials, while the fifth week is for two(2)
days of implementation specifically on the dates of April 18-19, 2022, and one(1) day
post-implementation. The figure below is a Gantt chart of activity based on the length of the
project.
Length of Immersion
The length of implementation is two days only. For the first day, around 6-7 hours (three
hours in the morning, for the preparation of the place and lecture. Another four hours in the
afternoon for the distribution/placement of the waste segregation trash bins). For the second day,
trainees will hold a mini-seminar/symposium in the nearby community to tackle and raise
awareness on coastal rehabilitation and preservation, and other environmental issues raised in the
immersion. During the whole two(2) days of implementation, the trainees will each post on their
respective social media accounts informative knowledge and advocacies on various
environmental issues with a graphical representation of knowledge, be it posters, images, or
infographics. The following days after the implementation of the project will be
post-implementation evaluation and monitoring on the project immersion.

The Objective of the Project

The purpose of the clean-up drive is to engage people to remove trash and debris from the
coastline, to identify the sources of litter, and to change the behaviors that cause pollution.
Furthermore, the intention of the environmental symposium is to draw the people of the
community into intellectual environment management and to raise awareness that timely
concerns, not only their community but also the society as a whole. This project aims to attain
and maintain the cleanliness of the Raagas Beach of Bonbon, Cagayan de Oro City, and to
improve people’s understanding of environmental concerns that the world is facing. Another goal
of this project is to incorporate social media dissemination into environmental education.

Background of the Study

Environmental awareness is to understand the fragility of our environment and the

importance of its protection. Promoting environmental awareness is an easy way to become an
environmental steward and participate in creating a brighter future for our children. The changes
in our climates, our surroundings, and the natural environment, in general, is damage that is
majority produced and made by us humans. In the record of human history, the globe started to
increase the carbon emissions and greenhouse gases have started to rise since the industrial
revolution. Misinformed individuals make the community crumble and with this, advocating
knowledgeable and widespread consciousness on environmental predicaments the world is
battling is extremely important.

Environmental education is one of the important areas, which is gaining prominence in

the modern world. Many worldwide discussions are going on regarding the solutions for
environmental problems. Due to the rapid increase of student population, environmental-related
issues are multiplying in recent years with a diversity of problems. Social media platforms with
millions of users throughout the world, such as Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube, have proven
effective in distributing messages, increasing awareness, and gaining support for topics and
movements that may have been neglected by mainstream media earlier. On social media sites,
the hashtag function allows everyone to participate in a multi-user conversation and is commonly
used as a digital tool for distributing a message, its goal is to change the perspective of
generation Z (millennials) with the environmental situations being in the pandemic.

Plastic pollution in the Philippines has been a major problem that chokes its seas. An
archipelagic nation of over 7,000 islands, the Philippines was tagged as one of the world’s worst
ocean plastic polluters after China and Indonesia. Globally, 396 million metric tons (MT) of
plastics were produced in 2016. Of this figure, at least a third, or 100 million MT, became land or
marine pollution, and if things continue as is, there will be more plastics than fish in the ocean by
2050, the WWF said (Sarmiento, 2019).

Improper solid waste management practices are harmful to riverine and coastal
ecosystems. In the Philippines, the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act (Republic Act No.
9003) decentralized the management structure and mandated Local Government Units (LGUs) to
adopt new integrated solid waste management (SWM) plans. However, LGUs often lack the
capacity, understanding, and enforcement authority for effective SWM. With minimal SWM
awareness leading to socio-economic and environmental problems, alternative management
approaches may be effective.
Justification of the Project
The continuous deterioration of the environment due to an insurmountable volume of
garbage has brought enough challenge to policymakers, locally and internationally. They have
come up with different interventions and methods to alleviate this problem. Information drive,
the introduction of alternative practices, implementation of e-code, are just some of those ways.
Despite these efforts, there are still underlying problems unanswered and uncontrolled. The
presence of garbage of miscellaneous composition in coastal areas is an indicator that the
campaign on garbage management has not yet been fully successful.
A beach clean-up is essentially a volunteer activity among concerned citizens that
regularly takes place along coastlines worldwide. People pitch in to collect beach trash to make
the beach a more pleasant and safer place for everyone. Cleaning the beach also improves the
coastal and ocean ecosystem by ensuring that none of the trash kills marine life or is toxic
enough to disrupt the aquatic life cycles. It is also an opportunity to gather new data about the
state of our coasts and the types of trash that pollutes them. By identifying the most harmful
debris items, environmental groups can find ways to stop them from entering the ocean or being
littered again on beaches.
With this project, we are able to advocate the people in the community and others in
doing clean-up drives, environment symposiums, and environment online education for them to
be aware of the world’s environment, especially our country’s environment’s current situation.
By doing awareness programs to a community, they can gain knowledge to have a full
understanding of the fragility of the environment around us and how it is important to protect it.
There is an ideology called environmentalism that is responsible for evoking the necessity and
responsibility of the human race to respect, protect, and preserve the natural environment from
human work effects that slowly depletes it.

Through programs like environmental awareness symposiums, environmental

information drive online, and coastal rehabilitation provide the people of the community with
opportunities to acquire the required knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values needed to protect,
conserve and improve the environment for its present and future generations. These also develop
and encourage new patterns of positive environmentally sensitive behavior among people to
achieve environmental sustainability.

Benefits Derived from the Project

The environment symposium and online education provide further knowledge on various
environmental changes and issues that affect our daily lives. With these, people of the society
will be more well-rounded in handling issues, can adapt and execute solutions in our
environmental problems.
The Coastal Clean-up project focuses on all members of the community, especially those
living near the seashore whose houses are vulnerable to high tides and also the accumulation of
trash carried by the tides. This project will encourage people to maintain cleanliness and will
hone one's ability to get along with others aside from helping them live in a better environment.
This will also help minimize the garbage in the coastal areas, prevent disease caused by improper
waste disposal and provide abundant opportunities for the residents, especially the fishermen and
indigents living in the coastal areas. This project aims to attain and maintain the cleanliness of
Raagas Beach in Bonbon, Cagayan de Oro City. Furthermore, this project aims to promote a
better environment for the residents living near Raagas Beach.

Coverage of the Project

The Coastal Cleanup project will be conducted at Raagas Beach in Bonbon, Cagayan de
Oro City. For the environmental symposium, the implementers will gather and only be choosing
20 people from the Raagas community for the face-to-face interaction. These 20 people should
be fully vaccinated and have a good health condition to prevent the possibility of spreading of
the virus. Proper health protocols issued by the local government and the Inter-Agency Task
Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF) will be properly executed.
Every internet user, including Facebook users, can participate in the environment online
education in disseminating important and useful information on various environmental concerns
that the trainees will choose.
Methodology
Division of labor and concrete plan of work is the main method for the success of the
project. To achieve that the team has the following methods:

The team is divided into three subgroups (in accordance with the program) and is then
again subdivided into factions (documentation, logistics, and communication) in which every
member has assigned tasks so that the project will work efficiently.

The logistics will take care of the materials and will prepare for the area of the venue
during the respective programs. They will be the ones to follow up with the members of the
subgroups if they have prepared the materials that are essential. They must report to their team
leader two days before the initiation.

The communication team is responsible for making surveys, gathering data, and
providing information. They are the link between the volunteers and the team. They must record
the data every time the team visits and puts the project into action. They are encouraged to show
a progress/ development report at every end of each activity. The documentation will compile
videos and images throughout the project in order to see the progress and also showcase what the
project is all about. They are tasked to show their compilation at the end of every program.

In addition, each member of the group will participate in the online environmental
information drive and education to have wider coverage in disseminating knowledgeable facts
and data. Usage of multiple social media platforms and accounts is highly encouraged.
Strategies

Consistency
The strategy of the team is consistency. The team must be consistent in maintaining every
part of the plan and must also practice discipline bypassing and accomplishing their tasks in
accordance with the respective deadlines.

Effective Communication
Establishing communication is important. The team must communicate with one another
by sharing the data that they gathered through any forms of media such as Facebook, texting, and
having regular meetings at least once a week with the president as the proponent. Also, the team
must communicate with the residents and must listen to all their concerns and suggestions.

Discipline
Discipline is highly emphasized throughout the project by giving out demerits according
to their deficiencies. Also, the facilitators and our coordinator would not want to exercise
inferiority complex. And breaking that atmosphere, they implement conditioning by giving out
merits to every job well done.

Consistency, effective communication, and discipline are the key ingredients for a more
clean and environment-friendly community.
