of communication is more
effective based on the
presentations and why?”
“Models of Communication, Sir!”
“Now let us proceed to our
discussion.” Students read the three models…

c. Abstarction “Linear, Interactive and Transactional

“Our topic for this afternoon is models of communication”
about what?’
What are the three models of (Students actively listen to the
communication? discussion).

Three Models of Communication

1. Shannon-Weaver Model of
Communication
- This model known as the
mother of all communication
models. This model consists of
five elements: a source (whom
the producer of the message):
transmitter (is the encoder of
message into signals); a
channel (in which signals
adapted for transmission; a
receiver (whom the decoder of
message from the signal; and a
destination.

Advantages of SWM
1. It explains the barriers to
effective communication very
well
2. It breaks down
communication into
understandable parts
3. Transferable to multiple
situations
Disadvantages of the SWM
1. There’s insufficient regard
for Feedback
2. It doesn’t account for power
relationships
3. It doesn’t address one-to-
many communication
2. Interactive Model of
Communication
- Wilber Schramm proposed the
model of communication in
1954 as Interactive.
- It is a two-way communication
process where a response is
given after message is sent.
- The recipient of action
intentionally or unintentionally
gives feedback associated with
information received.
- The exchange of ideas and/or
information verifies that both
parties should understand the
message.
- The process of encoding and
decoding are the key
components of this model
including feedback.
- Wilbur Schramm believed that
an individual’s knowledge,
experience and cultural
background also play an
important role in
communication.

3. Transactional Model of
Communication
- describes communication as a
process in which
communicators generate social
realities within social, relational,
and cultural contexts.
- sender and receiver both are
communicators
- communication is simultaneous
at the same time.
- Non-verbal gesture is part of
feedback.

presented?”

“Any questions or clarifications?”

“If none, I have questions for you (Students pay attention to the
then: instruction attentively).
Guide Questions:
1. Based on these facts shared with
you, how would you differentiate
the three models of
communication?
2. What is more effective models of (Students Actively participate in the
communication and why? activity).
3. How can learning about
communication models be helpful
to you as a student?
d. Application
“Paint me a Picture”
“I will be dividing you into three
groups, the same groups
earlier and you will select a
leader and a secretary.”
“I will be reading situations, and
your task is to paint me a
picture of it”
“You should remain still until I
give you the order to move.”
“The group that will paint a
picture appropriately will
receive 2 points each.”

IV. Evaluation
