IMMERSIONS
LEARNING ACTIVITY SHEET 1

Grade & Section: 12 – St. Agnes of Bohemia

Subject: Inquiries, Investigations, and Immersions (Triple I)

Teacher: Ms. Joyce Pana

PROCESS OF SCIENTIFIC INVESTIGATION

I. MY STARTER
The conduct of an inquiry requires that it be done in a scientific manner and in a highly
objective atmosphere. Moreover, the success of an inquiry will rest on your ability to
identify a research problem, to strategize how to approach such problem, and to
communicate the outcome of the investigation.

DIRECTIONS: Observe the illustration below and see how scientific method works.

II. TEST YOUR UNDERSTANDING
Now that you are done with your reading activity, let’s proceed activity 1 to check your
understanding about the lesson.
ACTIVITY 1

DIRECTIONS: Arrange the following process of scientific investigation 1-5.

STEP NO. PROCESS OF SCIENTIFIC INVESTIGATION

5 Communicating the results
3 Formulate hypothesis
4 Processing the data
1 Formulating research questions
2 Review of related literature

ACTIVITY 2

DIRECTIONS: Carefully read the article “It was only a mild concussion”: Exploring the
description of sports concussion in online news articles” available in your flash drive
then answer the following questions:

1. What was the subject of the inquiry (topic or theme) conducted?

The focus of the investigation is on news media and physical therapy. They
looked at the many descriptions of sports concussions that appear in news
articles throughout the world.
2. What type of research was it – basic or applied research? Explain.
It is a basic research investigation that was carried out. Before I go into my
argument, let me define basic research as a study that gathers enough data to
support/prove a notion or principle, resulting in new information or hypotheses
that have been validated. It's basic research because the authors wanted to
prove that journalists, as people with a lot of power over public opinion, should
be wary of using the phrase "concussion" in sports pieces.

3 LAS 1: Inquiries, Investigations, and Immersions

3. What were the data-gathering methods employed by the researchers to
address the problem of their inquiry?
The researchers utilized Google to collect news and sports articles that use the
phrase "concussion" in their chosen sports; they analyzed these documents and
devised a way to enhance their findings.
4. Were the researchers able to achieve the goal(s) of their inquiry? Why do you
say so?
Yes, in my perspective, since they were able to acquire a significant quantity of
papers and classify them in a way that allowed them to achieve their
goals/desired result.

III. REFLECT UPON

In dealing with life’s challenges, you have to be aware of the specificity and the scope of
the challenge.

Have you been in a situation wherein you are confronted with an obstacle? What did
you do to overcome it?

We often extol the virtues of success, but we can't accomplish it if we don't

have the willpower to overcome our obstacles. Even if others may argue that smooth
waters do not create skilled sailors, I have evidently faced a plethora of challenges
during my life's journey. Last year, one of the most subtle examples of a challenge I
faced was when I was having trouble finishing my schoolwork owing to a combination
of emotional turbulence and a lack of drive. I practiced being conscious of my emotions
and executing my duties one by one as a solution to this difficulty. Despite the fact that
time management was a challenge, I pushed myself to work harder and as efficiently as
possible.
