V. Learning Experiences (5 Es)
1. Engage (5 minutes) Video Presentation about Simple Machines ( 2 min.)
Let the pupils watch a video presentation about simple machines. The
teacher will ask follow-up questions about the video
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pMpmit5YMcg

What is the video all about?

Possible Answer:
The video is all about machines.
What are the types of machines mentioned in the video?
Possible Answer:
The types of machines mentioned in the video are lever, inclined plane,
wedge, screw, pulley and wheel and axle.
Can you find more examples of these simple machines around? Give
some examples.
Possible Answer:
Yes, we can find more examples of these simple machines. Some of
these are scissors, stairs, knife, crane, wheelbarrow etc.
Are these machines important? Why or why not?
Possible Answer:
Yes, these machines are important because these make our work easier
and faster.

2. Explore ( Group activity)

(15 minutes) Group the pupils into three.
Remind the learners the rules in group work.
Note: Emphasize the safety measures when handling the simple
machines.
1. Make sure your group activity area and the simple machines are clean
before, during and after the activity.
2. Make sure to get only the examples of simple machines assigned to
your group.
3. Be extra careful in holding and using heavy and pointed or sharp

2|Page
objects.
What to do:
Using realia (crowbar, fishing rod, wheelchair, knife, bottle cap and
ramp) put in the corner of the classroom, each group is tasked to get
the examples of simple machines assigned to their group. They will
describe each machine and demonstrate and explain its uses.
Group 1: Lever
Possible Answer:
(Crowbar). A crowbar is a straight rigid bar. It is used in digging
hard soil.
Inclined Plane
Possible Answer:
(Ramp). A ramp is a sloping surface between two places that
are at different levels. It is used as an aid for raising or
lowering a load.
Group 2: Wedge
Possible Answer:
(Knife ). A knife is a sharp blade attached to handle. It is used
for cutting or as a weapon.
Screw
Possible Answer:
(Bottle cap). A bottle cap is a circular piece of plastic. It is used
to close a bottle.
Group 3: Pulley
Possible Answer:
(Fishing rod). A fishing rod is a long, tapering rod to which a
fishing line is attached. It is used by fishermen to
catch fish.
Wheel and Axle
Possible Answer:
(Wheelchair). A wheelchair is a chair fitted with wheels. It is
used as a means of transport by a person who is
unable to walk as a result of illness, injury, or
disability.

3. Explain (10 minutes) Let two representatives of each group report their outputs to the
class.
Process their answers through asking the following questions:
1. How did you find the activity?
Possible Answer:
It was fun, interesting and exciting.

3|Page
2. What did you discover while doing the group activity?
Possible Answer:
I discovered that machines can be classified into lever, pulley,
inclined plane, screw, wedge and wheel and axle.

3. Who is more capable to use simple machines? Man or

Woman? Why?
Possible Answer:
Both man and woman are capable to use simple machines as long
as they have the ability to manipulate these things.
4. Why is it important to be more careful in manipulating
some simple machines?
Possible Answer:
It is important to be more careful in manipulating some simple
machines to avoid accidents.
SAY:
Good job. You were able to finish your assigned task since you
collaborate your ideas. If you listen and respect each other in your
group, there is always a good result.
ASK:
What are simple machines?
Possible Answer:
Simple machines are things/materials that make working on
tasks easier.
Background Information
Simple machines can be classified into inclined plane, lever, wedge,
screw, pulley or wheel and axle.
The inclined plane is a simple machine that has a sloping surface. It
lessens the effort exerted in transporting weight over a distance and
height.
The lever is a device, which has a fulcrum or a pivot point, the effort
end where force is applied, and the resistance end where the load is
located.
The wedge is double inclined plane that is sharpened to an end. It
adds more force to the effort as it goes through a longer distance.
The screw is a form of inclined plane that is wrapped around a
central shaft.
The pulley is a modified wheel and axle. It is a special type of wheel
that has a rope sliding on the groove of the wheel. The groove prevents
the rope from sliding.
The wheel and axle has the same appearance with the pulley, but it

4|Page
has a wheel that is fixed to the axle, like in the steering wheel of a car.
