ANSWER SHEET
Worksheet 1.2
II – ANSWER BRIEFLY:
1. Draw a microscopic view of
a) a gas.
1
b) a liquid.
c) a solid.
2
2. Compare and contrast the macroscopic and microscopic properties of solids,
liquids and gases.
• Macroscopic features of solids include low KE levels, great
incompressibility, and the capacity to keep shape. Liquids, on the other
hand, have a higher KE level, are slightly compressible, and adhere to
their container's shape. To add, gas has high KE level and is highly
compressible, and takes the shape of its own container. Conversely,
Solid possesses slow-moving molecules, and an extremely strong
intermolecular connection yet has a tiny intermolecular distance in
microscopic characteristics. In liquids, molecules move quicker, and
molecular bonds are weaker, but intermolecular space is bigger. Finally,
in gas, the molecules move very quickly and there are no intermolecular
bonds, but the intermolecular distance is very vast.
3. Explain how you can turn a solid into a liquid. How many ways are there to do this?
• There is only one way to change a solid into a liquid, and that process is
known as melting. The temperature at which a pure substance melts,
known as the melting point, is a property of that substance. The
transformation of a solid into a liquid necessitates the use of energy.
5. Wet your hand, then blow on it. What do you feel? Why?
• As I blow air on my wet hand, I notice a cold sensation, which is caused
by the evaporation process. Blowing on my moist palm aids in the
evaporation of the water. The air circulation will also aid in the passage of
heat from my skin.
