Translating acronyms
We need an explanation about what acronyms stand for. Our topic
today is focusing on translating acronyms in a special field, that is
English for Environmental science. SO We take some text from the
coursebook as well as from some internet journal and article that
contains acronyms, then we translate them 

Text 1: 

In 2001, the United Nations Target language (TL): Vào

→ Comment:
  In this case, GRASP pronounced /ɡræsp/ is an acronym, it is
formed by the initial letter of the string of words “Great Apes
Survival Project”. 
 This acronym is pronounces as a word.  
 Using semantic translation, GRASP is translated into Vietnamese
as “Dự án Sinh tồn của loài Vượn Lớn” according to the full form
of it.
 Pay attention, the acronym GRASP can be confused with the verb
“grasp” with all lowercase, means to take strongly hold sth ỏ to
understand sth completely.

→ acronym RAM is pronounced as [ram], with a short 'a' sound like in
'cat' and
RAM stands for Release Abatement Measure. This refers to a set of
measures that are designed to eliminate or reduce the release of a
hazardous substance or pollutant into the environment
It is also formed by the initial letter, indicated by being put in
parenthesis (ngoac don) after full form. and this is translate as “Bien
phap giam thieu phat thai”
If readers read any text in this article that has only the word RAM
without any explanation→ confused about what RAM means.. whether
it is a word, or a name, or a shorten word? But in article context, this is
explained for the first time reading in a fullform, means “Release
Abatement Measure”

một loài thực vật hoặc động vật và đưa nó vào DNA của loài khác để
thêm một đặc điểm mới. …Những người ủng hộ thực phẩm biến đổi
gen cho rằng công nghệ này sẽ giúp tăng sản lượng lương thực và giá

→ Comment: 
In environmental science text, GM stands for Genetically Modified,
which means “biến đổi gen” in Vietnamese. 
We translate the acronym “GM” into the target language by literal
translation and don’t rewrite the acronym GM after the phrase “biến
đổi gen”. 
But we omit the third “GM” because readers could understand what
people oppose, which is GM food. 
But DNA is an acronym?
It can stand for different phrases like 'Associate Degree in Nursing',
'Area Distribution Node', 'American Depository Notes', 'Abbreviated
Dialing Number', 'Automatic Digital Network',
But in this case,...
We use loan word to translate the acronym “DNA” into Vietnamese.
DNA is a nucleic acid called “deoxyribonucleic acid”. Because there is no
exact target translation. Many articles, journal, … all directly use “ADN”
to call the cells of animals and plants that carry genetic information.

 In this text, VOCs is an acronym. It is easily determined by the
capital initial letter of the string of words “ Volatile Organic
Compounds”. 
 In this case, VOCs is a type of pluralized acronym formed by
adding the suffix “s” without apostrophe / Ơ po trơ phi ?, and
the suffix “ s” is usually written in lowercase.
It is pronounced as /ˌviː.oʊˈsiːs/
 Using literal translation, we translate this as “các hợp chất hữu cơ
dễ bay hơi” based on the full form of VOCs

→ Comment:
- In this text, WASH refers to Water, Sanitation and Hygiene. As usual,
Water, Sanitation and Hygiene are abbreviated as WSAH . However, in
order to pronounce easily, this acronym tends to reorder the letters to
WASH. 
- WASH is pronounced as /wɑːʃ/, it seems like verb “wash” - meaning
clean with water. 
- may cause confusion if this acronym is not gone with explanation and
capital letters. 
- By using literal translation, WASH is translated as “ nước, vệ sinh và vệ
sinh cá nhân” in the target language .
