infrastructure development: The case of Egypt’s East Port Said harbor,
Applied Geography, 2009.
2- Mehrem A.: The Future of Port Said East port, Master’s degree,
Molde University, 2011.
There are several reasons why students choose this subject, which can
be summarized as follows:
1- The significant role that maritime transport plays in achieving the
goals of comprehensive and sustainable development.
2- Applied geographical contribution to serve development and support
and achieve development work.
3- The planning and development of ports is considered part of the
national planning, as it is linked to economic development projects.
4- Highlighting the importance of the two ports as a result of the large
increase in the volume of foreign trade to Egypt, and their continuous
trend towards upgrading and development.
5- The importance of the research lies in the fact that the port of East
port said is one of the ports that have a strong influence on the national
economy due to its location on the Suez Canal, and it is one of the first
sources of the national economy.
Fourth: Study Objectives:
This study aims to achieve the following:
1- Studying and analyzing the importance of establishing the two ports of
the North Sinai coast at the regional and national levels.
2- Clarifying the role of natural and human geographical factors in
determining the most appropriate place for choosing the location of the
two ports of the North Sinai coast, and the impact of those factors on
traffic there.
3- Studying the role of the port in serving foreign trade by determining
the volume of goods and the number of passengers arriving and
departing from the port.
4- Developing a future map for the possibility of expanding and
developing the ports of the North Sinai coast in light of the natural and
human conditions of the port area, in order to accommodate the
increasing movement of the volume of world trade.
Fifth: Curricula and methods used:
A- Research Methods:
In his studies, the student will rely on many approaches that are
consistent with his approach to the subject of the research to achieve
the objectives of the study, including:
Historical Approach:
This approach was used to study the historical development of the
establishment of the port of the North Sinai coast and the development
of the port's transport movement.
Thematic Approach:
Where the objective approach was used to study the factors affecting
the port, whether natural or human, and their impact on the port.
Regional Approach:
Through this approach, it is possible to study the subject under study
within administrative borders that are not allowed to be crossed, as well
as to stand on the spatial variation in the study area.
B- Study methods and tools:
Methods and tools were used that are in line with the treatment of the
studied phenomenon, and accordingly, the quantitative method will be
the basis of the study, represented in finding a number of statistical
measures in the analysis of many tables, in addition to applying some
mathematical equations. The cartographic method was used mainly in
producing research forms in order to help understand and analyze most
phenomena through maps. Also, the field study will be a method or tool
to find out the nature of the study area in the absence of data, and then
add a lot to the research. Among the tools that will be used through the
field study (questionnaire, interviews, observations).
Sixth: previous studies
There are many geographical studies that dealt with the issue of ports, a
study in the geography of maritime transport. Some of them focused on
one port, and some of them focused on studying a group of ports at one
time. All studies did not deal with North Sinai coast ports in an
independent study, but the researcher benefited from most of the studies
that dealt with ports. We mention, for example, the following:
Magdy Sayed Ahmed, Abu Al-Nasr, Container Transport in the Suez
Canal, "A Study in the Geography of Transport," Annals of Arts, Ain
Shams, Egypt, 2013.
The study relied on studying container transport in the Suez Canal and
identifying the capabilities and capabilities of the Suez Canal in light of
the global fleet of container transport, and studying the movement of
container ships through four variables: the number of ships, the net
tonnage, the quantity of goods, the number of containers passing
through the Suez Canal, and finally the study of alternative routes to the
Suez Canal.
Magdy Sayed Ahmed, Abu Al-Nasr, Container Transport Possibilities in
Egypt's Sea Ports, "A Study in the Geography of Transport", Middle East
Journal (Middle East Research Center, Ain Shams University), Egypt,
2009.
The study relied on the definition of the container, its dimensions and
size, and a presentation of the importance of container transport, the
development of its appearance and the stages it went through, and a
presentation of the available marine and land capabilities for container
transport in Egyptian ports, the development of the volume of container
traffic, and the geographical distribution of container ship traffic. The
research includes a conclusion, and some results and recommendations
have been reached.
Abd al-Salam Abd al-Sattar, Ismail, Container Transport in the East Port
of port said , "A Study in the Geography of Maritime Transport," a
research published in the Faculty of Arts, Zagazig University, Egypt,
2014.
The study was based on presenting the importance of container
transport, its development, the natural components of the East Port of
Branching and the volume of traffic on it, knowing the economic return
from operating the port, and future planning for container transport.
Mehrem A.: The Future of Port Said East port, Master’s degree, Molde
University, 2011.
The study relied on a study of container ports in the Mediterranean
Basin and their passage through the four generations, identifying
logistical centers and their functions and what are the factors influencing
their identification, then he studied the characteristics of container ports,
their characteristics and future developments for him, and the study
based on the study of East Port Said port as a case study, where the
researcher studied the port from Where its location, technical
specifications, volume of traffic on it and the master plan for it, and the
study ended with results and recommendations.
Seventh: The study deals with the following points:
The research included five main sections preceded by an introduction
and ending with a conclusion containing the results and
recommendations, namely:
First: the establishment and planning of the port.
A- The establishment and development of the two ports.
B - the layout of the two ports.
Second: The geographical features of the two ports of the North Sinai
coast.
A- Geographical location.
B - coastline.
C - water front.
D - lines of equal depths.
E - Climate:
Water temperature.
- The wind.
- It rains.
f- The road network.
Third: Geographical analysis of the transport movement in the two ports:
A- Ship movement.
B - passenger traffic.
C - movement of goods.
Fourth: The spatial relations of East Port Said and Al-Arish ports and the
frequency of ships:
A- The backs of East Port Said and Al-Arish ports.
B - The counterpart to the ports of East Port Said and Al-Arish.
C - the rate of infiltration.
Fifth: The status of the two ports of the North Sinai coast between the
Egyptian ports and the eastern Mediterranean.
Sixth: The consequences of the port activity.
