is usually very comfortable, but it’s
a necessary part of life. Think of
the growing pains that keep young
kids up at night, or of the physical
pain that accompanies an athlete’s
journey to success in his or her
sport.
Growth hurts because the old
shape of things must stretch and
shift to make room for the new, and
mental growth…social growth, isn’t
any different.
To grow we must allow
ourselves to be uncomfortable and
have faith that the discomfort is
making room for something more
beautiful. And that my friends iI
have along with the Valley CARE
Coalition, and the Glasgow City
County Library has had in mind
with bringing the Hands of Hope
Mural to our community.

Cat’s Mural continued from front
It’s no secret that Glasgow and the surrounding
area has been rocked by suicide over recent years.
Truth be told, the entire state struggles with suicide
and depression, as does much of the nation. The
uncomfortable reality surrounding this truth, is that
we don’t like to talk about negative feelings, it makes
us uncomfortable. And that’s exactly why we NEED
to make space for conversation surrounding mental
health, if we ever hope to grow as a community.
The Hands of Hope Mural was a project that artist
Cathryn McIntyre began to have reoccurring dreams of
visiting this past winter as she was battling the seasonal
depression that so many of us suffer from every year.
In the dreams she was visiting the completed mural,
where she found herself comforted by the presence of
the “God”-like hands, and uplifted by the hundreds of
beautiful rocks painted by community members. The
dreams were so vivid, and so insistent that Cat felt like
she had to paint the vision to get it out of her mind. And
after painting it, she realized that this vision had the
potential to be something that could help the collective
mental health of our community.
If you’ve ever found yourself battling one (or
many) of those “dark days” you will know how difficult
it can be to climb out of a mental hole. Usually its’ hard
to leave the house. Heck, sometimes its hard to leave
the bed. Its almost always very difficult to ask for help,
especially with the way our society approaches most
health issues. Usually we like to push the pain away and
pretend it isn’t there. We take a pill and expect it to fix
everything.
Sometimes the pill doesn’t do anything but help us
hide the pain from ourselves.
One of the best aspects of living in Valley County
is the beautiful hills and valleys we are surrounded by,
and another of the best aspects are the communities
we are a part of. The members of our community care
for one another, but no one cares more deeply about
mental health than the Valley CARE Coalition, who
has recently achieved nonprofit status and is leading the
way in many community minded events that have been
created to support the battle against depression.
The CARE Coalition saw with clarity the potential
of Cat’s vision for this mural, and the impact it could have
on our community in creating a place for community
members to gather in groups or individually to be
inspired in their battle against depression. The beauty
of the Hands of Hope Mural is in the light the hands
emit amongst the darkness, so much like the light
we contribute to one another’s lives by small acts of
kindness.
The mural site is accessible 24/7, but the most
important part of the mural has not yet been fully
created, and for it to happen, WE NEED YOU,
GLASGOW! Please join us TONIGHT, Tuesday 9/26
from 5-7pm to paint rocks for the mural site. The
hundreds of small colorful rocks we paint will be left at
the mural site over the coming years for our community
members to access whenever they need a mental boost
to help them through the dark days we all face from
time to time. Let’s grow together, in the most beautiful
way; by bringing light and color to the darkness.

A few year ago in football

At the beginning of high school football in Glasgow,
the boys would play only three or five games each year. But
as the sport got more popular there were more games each
season and eventually plays started.
Glasgow actually played intramural football from
1916 to 1918 with the players wearing bib overalls for their
uniforms. The program stopped after the 1918 season.
The first few years Glasgow played only three games.
Second-year coach Andy Brask led his team to a 3-1 record
with the lone loss to Wolf Point,23-0. J. V. Warling was at
the helm the next three years, posting an 11-5 record. The
1928 team was 6-2, the best record thus far. The roster also
grew from 18 to 27. The Highlanders on;y losses were to
Williston, 19-0, and Havre, 67-7. They defeated Saco three
times, 58-0, 32-0, and 11-0. Glasgow also had wins over
Wolf Point, 7-0, Chinook, 12-6, and Malta 44-0.
Members of the team were Palmer Boreson, David
Boyd, Clinton Combs, Robert Cornwell, Charles Cotton,
Thomas Dignan. Paul Etchepare, Ambrose Friedl, Richard
Friedl, Norris Kjos, Vernon Lentz, Ruben Lewow, Fred
Parke, Clement McCormick, Jasper DeDobbeleer, Vernon
Peterson, Arthur Rice, Seldoon Richter, Bert Sammons,
James Scott, Russell Scott, Dale Smith, Pat Stevens, Ernest
Stormsvik, Orville Stromvik, Cletus Walsh, and Cyral
Walsh.
Guy Weaver took over the program in 1927. Glasgow
went 4-4-2 over the next two seasons. Lloyd Oaborn was
at the helm for the 1929 season where Glasgow had its best
year, going 7-1-1.
Glasgow had wins over Saco, 32-0, Wolf Point, 7-0,
Poplar 13-0, Malta 6-0, Chinook, 13-0, Scobey 13-6, and
Lewistown, 13-0. The loss waa to Miles City, 530, and the
tie was against Havre, 0-0.
Osborn’s squads were 1-3-1, 3-3 and 6-1. Howard
Peters coached the Glasgow boys from 1933, 1934 and
1936. He was the assistant coach under Osborn in 1932.
Osborn was the assistant 1933 and 1934. Under Peters,
Glasgow was 6-8-1.
In 1935 Ray Buzzetti was at the helm for Glasgow,
going 0-6. It was the first year Glasgow didn’t win a game.
Numbers started to increase in 1936 with 42 athletes
playing.
Bob Breen took the program in 1937 and coached
for the next four years, posting a 14-12-1 record. Some
notables on the 1937 squad were Mitch Etchart, manager,
Leo Pattison, Roy Christianson, Carroll Brandt, Bob
Craswford, Perry Svingen, and Maurice Wesen.

Some of the notables on the 1938 team were Harry
Farrington, Bert Osen, Pattison, and Richard Weber.
Darwin Markle was a manager on the 1939 squad along
with players Marvel Bjorklund, Kenneth Bruce, Dick
bundy, Jack Markle, Junior Mahugh, Pattison, Junior
Rassmussen, Weber, and Paul Wesen.
Bob Murray would join the staff as assistant coach
in 1940. Some of the players on the squad were Willard
Bruce, Lawrence Combs, Howard and Lawrence Cornwell,
Patison, Dan Radakvich, Dan French, Phil and Sheldon
Sinclair, and Weber.
Bob Murray took over the head coaching duties from
1941 to 1943. His teams compiled a 6-3 record. Glasgow
was 1-1 in 1942. Glasgow had only 18 players in 1942. And
were 0-1 the following year.
A few of the notables on the 1941 squad were Charles
Billingsley, Ralph Eayrs, Osen, Pattison, Rasmussan, and
Sinclair brothers,
On the 1943 team were Everett Breigenzer, Alvin
Combs, Vic Eklund, James Farell, Frank Helland Norman
Hopstad, Richard Larsen, Joe Luckman, and Don Phay,
just to name a few.
Next week, if all goes well, we’ll look at Glasgow’s last
state championship.

Hi All. It’s Kyler Hallock, a recent 2022 Graduate of
Glasgow High School. I wanted to take this time to say
a few things about the Scottie Field “Recharged” Project
and upcoming School Bond. As a former student-
athlete at GHS, I participated in Football and Wrestling
for all four years, and for me, being involved in sports
was a huge part of my life!
My experience as a Football player has led me
to voice my support of artificial turf for the Glasgow
School District. Throughout my four years as a High
School student, I always had one or two nagging
injuries that would only come back during Football
season. These injuries definitely hindered my physical
ability and affected my mental well-being. All four years
of high school I had severe shin splints associated with
our practice and game field surfaces at Glasgow High
School. Anyone that has had to deal with shin splints
or a severe case of them; knows that they are not fun.
Throughout High School, I was constantly going in for
physical therapy to get them dry needled, using our
Game-Ready ice machine that the school provides for
athletes, and many other ways to try and get rid of them
or make them better.
After my senior year, I committed to continue
my academic and athletic career at Dickinson State

How long has the community of Glasgow hosted
the Top 10 Track Meet? Are we in danger of losing
the event?
The Top 10 Track Meet began in the spring of
1983 under the legendary Scottie brain trust of Norm
Girard, Mark Yoakam, and Bob Farrell. It was the first
meet of its kind in the State of Montana and has since
seen many spin-offs around the region. All of which
replicate our exact format! It is a point of pride for this
community and it was recently named/rededicated to
one of its founders. It is now affectionately known as
the Norm Girard Northeast Montana Top 10 Track Meet!
It regularly features 30 schools throughout Northern and
Eastern Montana; bringing teams from as far West as
Havre and as far Southeast as Baker. The Glasgow
Chamber of Commerce estimates well over $25,000
in community revenue on that lone Tuesday afternoon/
evening in smalltown Glasgow, Montana. Next spring
University in North Dakota. In the back of my mind I
was scared that my shin splints would return and it would
be a career ending physical impairment for me. Once I
realized that DSU had a synthetic surface, I thought to
myself, “maybe my shin splints will go away?”. During
my redshirt year I never got shin splints a single time!
Now in my second full season as a player for the
Blue Hawks I am happy to report that I am injury-free
and have officially beat shin splints. It is important to
note that our college team does not practice or compete
on any natural grass. We practice every single day on
our Turf game field and we play all of our home games
on the same turf. Additionally, every single away game
on our schedule is also played on artificial surfaces.
Shin splints were not my only constant-ailment
as a High School player, as I also dealt with tight
hamstrings and pain associated with my hamstrings.
I can confidently say my hamstrings are no longer an
issue either and I can only attribute it to the safe and
consistent surface that I get to practice and play on
every single day. Hamstrings and Shin splints are only
MY story. They are not the only thing that ails football
players, but they were my biggest ones during my time
as a Scottie. I just wanted to share my personal thoughts
and experiences with a synthetic turf football field and
why I think it’s the right move for my hometown. Thank

marks our 42nd Annual. Simply incredible.
It is not hyperbole and our situation is indeed dire.
The condition of our facility will undoubtedly dictate the
future of our famed Top 10 Track Meet. Alternate meet
locations have already been explored and discussions
are underway. We do NOT want to lose this meet, among
many other events, but we will not be able to faithfully
stand in the way of newer facilities available in Northeast
Montana that will provide better student-athlete safety
and better opportunities for success for all involved.
