Susie for Schools

We had the fine privilege of
meeting Susie Hedelan who
stopped into the Buzz, and what
a delight! Susie is hoping to
step into the footsteps of current
Montana Superintendent of
Public Instruction Elsie Arntzen
who is at the end of her term limit.
Susie is Elise’s deputy, so she
already knows the job extremely
well. In the 20 minutes spent
together with Susie and Stacy,
we didn’t talk much about politics,
but we found out that Susie is a
hometown Townsend girl, and
her friend Stacy Knuth, who was
traveling with her, is a Glendive
Red Devil, long-time rival of the
Glasgow Scotties. And then
things took off from there. What
a great chat it was, and we didn’t
talk much about politics. Susie
says she’ll be back this summer
as she loves fishing on Fort Peck
Reservoir. Who knows, maybe
she will get to go fishing with
Governor Greg Gianforte, the
first and only Montana Governor
who has fished in the Montana
Governor’s Cup, who also
endorses Susie. Her opponent,
Democrat candidate Shannon
O’Brien, is endorsed by former
Governor Steve Bullock. Susie’s

My husband was down at the Courthouse at 7:36am
on Friday, May 10th to get 5 trees for our home. We have
been trying to make our little house more appealing as
we live on a corner lot.
When my husband called me at 7:38am he said
there were no trees left. A lady came out and said “There
were no more trees”.
So, you mean to tell me 200 people were able to get
5 trees apiece in 6 minutes and be gone. I think not!
So, it the tells me you started giving away trees
earlier than 7:30am or people took more than 5 trees.

Let’s Get Education Back to Basics
The Montana Office of Public Instruction (OPI)
recently released Montana’s annual state report card and
report cards for individual schools — and the results
show a troubling trend. We must take action. We must
get education back to basics and improve our students’
foundational skills.
A majority of students are not proficient in reading,
math, or science. Only 46 percent of Montana students
are proficient in reading and only 37 percent in math and
science. Meanwhile, we are spending a record $13,000
each year per student on education.
As a former elementary school teacher and current
administrator, I understand the pivotal role of early
literacy. During their early years, children learn to
read, and from there, they read to learn. I am proud of
the work my colleagues and I on the Board of Public
Education have accomplished over the past year. We have
implemented targeted interventions for early literacy and
reduced administrative burdens on schools. By reducing
state bureaucracy and focusing on core subjects, we are
empowering teachers to teach and students to learn. This
will also help ensure that education funding is directed to
classrooms and students, not administrative bureaucracy
and unnecessary reporting measures.
There is more that can be done at the Office of Public
Instruction, though. The state education agency should
be customer service-focused, prioritize transparent and
understandable information for parents, provide high-
quality professional development for teachers, and reduce
administrative burdens on school leaders. That is what
parents and educators expect and what taxpayers deserve.
Additionally, the Office of Public Instruction
must partner with other state agencies, the college and
university system, and private sector leaders to expand
student career and technical education opportunities.
About half of Montana students who graduate high
school each year don’t have a plan to go to college or enter
the military or job training programs. As a state, our goal
should be to have every student graduate high school
prepared to succeed in college or with career skills that
they can build upon in an on-the-job training program.
This can be accomplished through collaborations with
colleges and universities to expand dual credit and
private sector industries, providing high school students
with work-based learning opportunities in the trades and
other fields relevant to our students and our Montana
industries.
With graduation right around the corner, parents
deserve complete confidence that our public school system
has prepared their children with the building blocks for
lifelong success. I encourage all Montana families to
examine how the state and local schools are doing. By
getting education back to basics, we can grow student
achievement in core subjects and expand individualized
learning opportunities. This will prepare Montana
students for future success and keep indoctrination out
of the classroom. The future of Montana’s children and
economy depends on it.

Pitching is getting stronger

After losing three pitchers from last year’s squad
and playing with younger throwers, the Glasgow
coaches feel they are on track heading into this
weekend’s action and divisional. Junior Macy Martin,
sophomore Brynn Donaldson and freshman Brynlie
Boreson took over in the circle this year.
“We know how we are going to attack teams.
It took a few weeks to figure it out,” Glasgow coach
Robert Martin. “It takes a while to filter it out.
The Scotties hosted Class A Havre Thursday,
falling to the Blue Ponies 10-0. It happened that the
game was the final home game of the regular season.
Tuesday night the Scotties were to host Sidney, but due
to the weather that game was canceled.
Martin said that the Scotties faced Havre’s ace, as
was the first time they played the Blue Ponies.
“We faced that really good pitcher again. She’s one
of the best in the state, all-class,” said Martin. “Brynn
started the game and Brynlie came in in relief. Both of
them did an exceptional job. They both pitched really
well to keep us close.”
Martin added that they gave up a three-run home
run, but other than that the game was close, 4-0 and 5-0.
“It was so hard to hit against the pitcher because she
throws so hard,” Martin said. “Our girls put a lot of
balls in play. I was proud of their effort. We played
well defensively. It was a good experience for us. The
tougher teams we play, the better we will get.”
Glasgow (6-10-1) traveled to Cowtown Saturday
where the Scotties beat Miles City 13-3. Martin worked
four innings in the circle to get the win. She had a
no-hitter, while striking two. Donaldson finished the
game to get the save. She gave up one hit and struck
out four.
“Macy started out for us, then we brought Brynlie
in and she pitched well,” said Martin.
Riley Clampitt led the offense with 3 hits, 2 home
runs, 2 runs and 3 RBIs. Tatum Nyquist and Hayden
Green each had a double, 2 runs and an RBI. Halle
Hunter had a hit, 2 runs, and a stolen base. Martin had
a hit, a run and 2 RBIs. CharLee McColly had a hit,
run and 2 stolen bases. Tessa Miller a hit, run, RBI and
stolen base. Berkeley Hillman a run, RBI and stolen
base. Elle Eggebrecht a run.
Glasgow finished the season with a 4-2-1 record
against Class A teams.
“The girls played well and had another good
defensive effort,” said Martin. “We hit the ball well. We
put a lot of balls in play. Riley had a two-run home
run. She is really starting to swing the bat well. She
was 3 for 3. Tatum played well at shortstop as she has
all year. She’s a force there because she makes a lot of
plays. Proud of how she has played for us. It was a good
team win for us to get us back on track.”
Glasgow has four tough games at the Class B
Challenge in Cut Bank. The Scotties start out with
Conrad today.
“They are one of the better teams in our
conference,” said Martin. “They may be one of the
teams we have to beat to get to state.”
Martin has a plan set to beat the Cowgirls at the
divisional tournament, but he’s not going to use it Friday.
“We might not throw all of our stuff at them,” he
said. “We’ll start a younger pitcher against them. We
don’t want to give them a look at what they’ll see at
divisional. It’s more about us getting reps.”
Troy, MAC (Mission-Arlee-Charlo) and Eureka
are also on the Scotties’ schedule.
Practice outside has not been good for Glasgow.
Martin said since the first practice they have been out
for 10 of them.
“I’m proud of how the girls are coming to practice
and working every day,” said Martin.
The Hinsdale trio has given the Scotties a huge
boost.
“Berkeley and CharLee are starters. And Brynlie
pitches for us,” said Martin. “Brynlie worked all
summer on her pitching. She has gotten so much
better. She’s done an outstanding job for us.She’s left-
handed and has the potential tom be great. She has a
lot of talent. All three of them added a huge dynamic
to our team.”

According to her height and weight on the
insurance charts, she should be a guard for the Lakers.
She has iron-starved blood, one shoulder is lower
than the other and she bites her fingernails.
She is the most beautiful woman I have ever seen.
She should be She’s worked on that body and face for
more than 60 years. The process for that kind of beatuy
can’t be rushed.
The wrinkles in the face have been earned...
one at a time. The stubborn one around the lips that
has deepened with every “NO!” The thin ones on the
forehead that mysteriously appeared when the first
child was born.
The eyes are protected by glass now, but you can
still see the perma-crinkles around them. Young eyes are
darting and fleeting. These are mature eyes that reflect a
lifetime. Eyes that have glistened with pride, filled with
tears of sorrow, snapped in anger, and burned from loss
of sleep. They are now direct and penetrating and look
at you when you speak.
THE BULGES ARE CLASSICS. They developed
slowly from babies too sleepy to walk who had to be
carried home from Grandma’s, grocery bags lugged
from the car, ashes carried out of the basement while her
husband was at war. Now, they are fed by a minimum of
activity, a full refrigerator and TV bends.
The extra chin is custom-grown and takes years to
perfect. Sometimes you can only see it from the side,
but it’s there. Pampered women don’t have an extra
chin. They cream them away or pat the muscles until
they become firm. But this chin has always been there,
supporting a nodding head that slept in a chair all
night... bent over knitting... praying.

when she “clerked” in the department store, got beat up
while teaching her daughter how to ride a two-wheeler.

THE HANDS? They’re small and veined and have
been dunked, dipped, shook, patted, wrung, caught in
doors, splintered, dyed, bitten and blistered, but you
can’t help but be impressed when you see the ring finger
that has shrunk from years of wearing the same wedding
ring. It takes time — and much more — to diminish a
finger.
I looked at mother long and hard the other day and
said, “Mom, I have never seen you so beautiful.”
“I work at it,” she snapped.
