Once Upon Time… In The Middle Of Nowhere!

This is a true tale about the
famous jail break that occurred in
1903 by desperate outlaws, and a
very interesting story.
There is one thing that I really
enjoy doing and that is checking
out old newspaper articles. I came
across a few stories and a lot of
old clippings on a cowboy named
William E Hardee in 1901. The
clippings kept piling up through
1901 to 1903 and did you know,
Hardee was scheduled to be the first
official hanging in Valley County,
Glasgow, Montana?
The story goes, that in 1901,
Hardee who was a cowboy with a
habit… that is, an opium habit,
had wandered into Northeastern
Montana from Wyoming.
According to some, he needed to
make some quick money for his
addiction and a pretty fast way to
do that was to round up wild horses
on the frontier near the ranch of J

cowboys who wanted to make some
extra money.
Hardee had a 17-year-old
partner named Charles Snearly.
They were doing pretty good until
in September of that year, the two
came back to their horse pen that
they put up their wild ponies in, just
to find them gone!
Well, one story goes, that

Once upon a time continued from front
Hardee got mad and blamed Snearly for their loss and
an argument was started. Hardee threw down his pistol
and told Snearly to pick it up. Before Snearly could do
anything, Hardee grabbed a shotgun and fired! The
doctor in Williston was summands to tend Snearly’s
wounds but it was too late, he died a very painful death
being shot through the arm and the lung.
Hardee decided to flee to North Dakota but it didn’t
take long for the Sheriff to find him and brought him to
the Glasgow Jail. In December of 1901, Hardee went to
trial and the jurors came back with a verdict of death by
hanging for the murder of Snearly.
Hardee’s attorney filed an appeal on the information
given to him by Hardee’s sister Lottie, who claimed that
their Grandmother went insane and committed suicide
and their Uncle had died as a ‘lunatic’. This gave Hardee
a reprieve from hanging until the Montana Supreme
Court could make their decision, which in the end, the
Supreme Court upheld the conviction in April of 1903.
Hardee must have been plotting an escape for some
time and the same day the verdict came in, Hardee
along with two other inmates made their first attempt
to escape by digging a hole through the brick wall.
When jailer John Dillard left the jail for ten minutes, it
gave Hardee the time to escape with prisoners Albert
Jackson and Jack Brown.
As soon as the jailer came back he realized the
escape and sounded the alarm. A posse was sent out
and by the next morning, they had recaptured Hardee
and Brown. Jackson was nowhere to be found and was
never recaptured. Brown received six more months in
jail for his trouble of escape.
By the beginning of June, pretty close to when
Hardee would be hanged, on June 26th, he plotted to
escape again with inmates Fred McKinney and George
E. Pierce and Jack Brown.
That time came on June 6th, 1903 when Under
Sheriff Harry Ritter was in the cell. While Jailer Dillard
came into the cell to collect the dishes, the inmates over
powered them and took Ritter’s Colt 45 and one of the
inmates ran to the kitchen where he found a Winchester
rifle. They then waited for the other guard Jack Williams
to come back from running an errand.
When Williams opened the door, he saw the
escapees and turned to run, but was shot in the back by
the Colt 45!
Williams lingered until the next morning when he
died.
THE GREAT JAIL BREAK HAD ARRIVED!
The four men ran for cover down by the Milk
River, where they ditched some shoes and clothes and
started to swim across the river. An hour after the jail
break, a ranch hand spotted three of them by the river
and a posse was about 15 minutes behind the men. The
posse was pretty sure the two, Hardee and McKinney,
were southeast of Glasgow, in the Big Dry country,
many men were scouring that part of the area for them.
Bloodhounds were sent for but the train delay would
prove it would be another day before they could be on
the trail.
It is said that Pierce and Brown had split from the
other two men and Pierce turned East towards North
Dakota. Brown found his way to Hindsdale and went
into a hotel there claiming the train had kicked him off!
He was fed and then waited for his friend who had made
arrangements to join him at 10:00 pm in Hindsdale. But
the friend, gave the Under Sheriff Ritter and Joe Miller
the ‘tip’.
He was captured 48 hours after the escape and
claimed Hardee had shot the guard Williams. But
Under Sheriff Ritter stated that it was Pierce who shot
and killed the guard.
Now in the mean time of having the posses out
trying to find Hardee and McKinney, there was trouble
brewing in Glasgow…. the Vigilante kind.
Brown was in so much fear of the vigilante’s that
he kept a priest with him every day but folks said there
probably would not be a lynching until Hardee or Pierce
was brought in. There was no secret of this lynching,
it was out in the open and they were not really after
Brown’s blood, they wanted the two killers brought in
and they would not live more than an hour afterwards!
Sheriff Buckley from Fort Benton and U.S.
Inspector George Hull have joined the posse with field
glasses and heavy rifles!
The posse with Sheriff Cosner was closing in on
the two escapees and Charles R Hill who was with
them had a ranch down in that area. Hill had been
joking about how he knew Hardee when he was a kid
in Wyoming and later on had been in a posse looking
for him when he saw him and put his rifle sight on him
but couldn’t bring himself to shooting him back then.
Hardee escaped that time.
This time, Hill was in front of the other posse
members when a shot rang out! Hill put his hands
above his head and then slumped down and to the
ground. He died shortly after that.
The other members of the posse jumped off their
horses and found cover, in the rocks and brush, not You’re invited to Valley View’s

opened fire in the direction of where they thought the Egg Hunt!

time to run to the house and get her father’s gun and
threw it to him. Darnell told him to drop the rifle but
McKinney ran instead, stating that he would rather die
than give up!
A shot rang out and McKinney was down on the
ground. McKinney lived another three hours and told
them that Hardee had lasted only 3 or 4 minutes after
being shot. With that, he died.
In the mean time, back in Glasgow, word was
brought to them that Hardee and McKinney were
dead.
It was said about 30 vigilantes, all wearing masks,
quietly stormed the jail house and drug Brown to the
second floor where they put a rope around his neck and
tied the end of the rope to the radiator and threw him
out the window. They left him there all night swinging.
THE GREAT JAIL BREAK WAS OVER!
Two years later, George E. Pierce who was wanted
for the murder of a deputy sheriff during the jail break in
Glasgow, escaped from the jail in Harrisville, Mo. where
he had been confined awaiting the arrival of Montana
officers!
And so it goes.
