LEXICAL TRANSFORMATIONS IN TRANSLATION

Task 1. Translate in to English paying attention to the translation of the

word “величезний” into English.

1. Борговий тягар країн, що розвиваються, є величезним. 2. Цим словам

надається величезного значення при визначенні друзів та ворогів. 3.
Олександру Македонському знадобилося всього лише три роки на
підкорення цієї величезної території. 4. Ріка Ангара витікає з величезного
озера Байкал. 5. Він нажив величезне багатство.

Task 2. Underline the lexical translation techniques used in the following

cases of translation (generalization or concretization). Express your opinion why
these techniques have been used.

1. I have been at him all the evening. - Я докучала йому цілісінький вечір.
2. It might seem bizarre in the United States or in the rest of Europe where for
years, the directors of the national security and intelligence agencies have been
routinely announced. - у Сполучених Штатах та в решті країн Європи це могло б
здаватися дивним, бо там керівники національних спецслужб, як правило,
називалися у пресі.
3. Miss Spence's car was standing by the front door. - Авто пані Спенс
припаркували біля парадного підїзду.
4. Dinny waited in a corridor which smelled of disinfectant. – Дiнн чекала у
коридорі, що просяк карболкою.
5. Oh dear, have you started bidding already? - Дорогенька, ти вже показала
масть?
6. "I could certainly swallow a highball," said Logan. - Я не від того, щоб
перехилити коктейль, зауважив Лоуген.
7. She snatched away their plates with mock something. – Вона прибрала
тарілки з липовими стравами.
8.... he asked her if she could use a drink.. - ... вiн запропонував ïй чашку кави.
 9. Libbard is only a country doctor. You ought to see a specialist. - Любард -
всього-на-всього сільський лікар, вам варто було б прокон 6 сультуватися у
кардіолога.
10. ... the boy was reading a pulp magazine with intense concentra tion. - -
молодик зосереджено читав дешевий журнал.

Task 3. Translate the sentences into Ukrainian and comment on the lexical
transformations you have used.

1. Something jarred in me almost painfully while he was speaking his light farewell
words.2. At last he found his voice. 3. I don't think she's living here at the moment.
Her bed wasn't slept in. 4. A carpet was on the floor, so thick and soft that it felt like
piles of velvet under my feet. 5. I have no wind, if you want to know the truth.
А) полісемантичні слова: The sprawling cities do offer an attractive pattern of
development. The age old concept of a feeling of belonging or community welfare
have eluded modern sprawling cities. The candidate key can not contain null value
and should always contain a unique value. A foreign key is a primary key for other
table, in which it uniquely identifies a record. Imagine robots working in hospitals.
Do you picture them showing care and concern towards the patients? Imagine
intelligent machines employed in creative fields. Do you think the robots excel in
such fields? With the help of 3DMax, one can get actual feel of the place. This helps
in giving a realistic touch and also involves the creative conceptualization of various
graphic designers, multimedia artist and other experts from the field of design and
architecture.

‘white elephants’ – products that were developed and launched which proved to be
little or no demand.
E) транскодування: Notebook computers are now out-selling desktops for the first
time of history. Now with the advancement of various multimedia based architectural
technologies, the mere process of presenting the plans of the architect has undergone
a major change. Aristotle is said to have written 150 philosophical treatises.
F) антонімічний переклад: Solar powered stars, solar energy collecting windows,
and building materials are not far from mainstream development. We have to increase
our knowledge of reality that are non-physical. It is not always the same thing to be a
good man and a good citizen.
G) компресія: This question has been resting on the debating table. The primary
source of carbon in today’s world is from deposits of coal that are mined. Jupiter is
the giant planet, which holds the distinction of being the largest planet in the solar
system.
H) декомпресія: Сompanies also allow continuing technical education to upgrade
their knowledge and skills. Plan and practical are the footsteps toward perfection. A
thriving population is the biggest contributor to the country’s growth.
I) пермутація: Sentiments are associated with moods that affect human efficiency.
Artificial intelligence finds applications in space exploration. AI researchers hope to
invent intelligent machines, which can perceive, learn and reason like humans.
J) транспозиція: Selling books on the Internet has become an important branch of ‘e-
commerce’. Due to the spread of societies, there is a frequent need of vehicles for
commuting over large distances. If you desire to get into a computer hardware career,
you are required to at least own a bachelor’s degree in the engineering field.

Task 4. Make a list of ten English words which you feel are particularly
difficult to translate into your target language. Comment on the source of
difficulty in each case.

Task 5. Translate the sentences into English using the noun thing for
Ukrainian equivalents.

1. Він продовжував бурмотати щось незрозуміле. 2. Ви повинні вибрати або

Grunnings, which made drills.
He was a big, beefy man with

однією причиною не знатися
з Поттерами: Дурслі не
хотіли, щоб їхній Дадлі
спілкувався з такими дітьми.
Коли містер і місіс Дурслі
прокинулись одного сірого
нудного ранку у вівторок, —
саме тоді й почалася наша

they could bear it if anyone
found out about the Potters.
Mrs. Potter was Mrs.
Dursley’s sister, but they
hadn’t met for several years;
in fact, Mrs. Dursley
pretended she didn’t have a
sister, because her sister and
her good-for-nothing husband
were as unDursleyish as it was
possible to be. The Dursleys
shuddered to think what the
neighbors would say if the
Potters arrived in the street.
The Dursleys knew that the
Potters had a small son, too,
but they had never even seen
him. This boy was another
good reason for keeping the
Potters away; they didn’t want
Dudley mixing with a child
like that. When Mr. and Mrs.
Dursley woke up on the dull,
gray Tuesday our story starts,
there was nothing about the
cloudy sky outside to suggest
that strange and mysterious
things would soon be

he left the house. He got into
his car and backed out of
number four’s drive.
