Movie Analysis: The Darkest Minds

The Darkest Minds is the first novel in the Darkest Minds Series by American author Alexandra
Bracken, published in 2012. It follows a group of children who are on the run from the
government after obtaining superpowers due to a mysterious infection. The Darkest Minds was
released in the United States on August 3, 2018 directed by Jennifer Yuh Nelson. It tells the
story of teen protagonist Ruby, who escapes a grim government camp for kids with special
abilities. She meets a group of other young people on the run led by the charismatic Liam. Also,
the story speaks to the experience of seeing your world as a dystopia, and to the young activists
who are now aligning with organizations like Black Lives Matter and the March For Our Lives.

On the campus while the children is in the Cafeteria, Ruby noticed her classmate Grace, was
fainted and her eyes turned into blue. Many of her classmates and the other children was died
from spreading the child-afflicting super virus. President, Gray, spoke to the public and
broadcast it and spread information on the super virus in the country. His son Clancy Gray is one
of the survivors, and most people don't know that he was treated as a prisoner and locked in a
cell. Ruby's parents gave her a keychain as her birthday present, they watched the broadcast of
President Gray spreading the lie that there is a Super virus called where young people have
different abilities or powers that are the most dangerous for everyone. At that time, her parents
were worried about her. On the night of his birthday, she looked at her Mother and held her
hand, when she held it, something strange happened to her and she was freezing. She saw her
future, and she was afraid of her ability because she had just seen it before. The next morning,
her mother didn't recognize her anymore, her parents lost memory of their daughter, and they
didn't even recognize her. His mother called the authorities and took him on the school bus
where he met only young people with power. They were taken to a prison campus for young
survivors. A years later, Ruby is still there in the prison campus of the young survivors and all of
them has extraordinary powers, sixteen-year-old Ruby has been in Thurmond Rehabilitation
Camp for six years. The government-run institution was supposedly created to help the children
mutated by a bizarre plague return to normal life. The plague, which strikes children after the age
of 10, either kills them or leaves them with supernatural abilities. The surviving kids gain powers
that are separated into five main categories that are a rough outline of powers, color green, blue,
gold, orange, and red. The Children's League sends agents to find reds, oranges and yellow kids
hiding in the camps in order to extradite them from the camps so that the League could use them.
Children start dying left, right and center because of Idiopathic Adolescent Acute
Neurodegeneration or IAAN for short. The disease kills 98% of children in the United States,
and a few other cases show up internationally. A prison doctor or resistance fighter helps Ruby
escape, she teams up with a van full of two teens and one child they’re blue Liam, green Charles
as known as Chubs, and gold Zu. Together, the quartet avoids trackers and bounty hunters and
searches for East River, a supposed secret haven for kids that's run by the elusive slip kid. Then,
Ruby’s many conflicted emotions, like her want to see her parents again knowing that they don’t
remember her, because Ruby accidentally erases herself from her parents’ memories, she
experiences a traumatic moment of rejection. Ruby and the others accidently find the camp of the
Slip Kid when they come upon a guerilla raid on an overturned tractor trailer. They are taken to
East River and welcomed as part of the refugee camp. Liam, Chubs and Zu are given new jobs
that they must do in order to stay, but Ruby becomes the special project of the Slip Kid.

The president’s son and poster boy for Psi rehabilitation, Clancy Gray, is an Orange and can
manipulate people’s minds. He used his power to convince his father and the doctors that he had
been healed. Clancy and Ruby spend many hours a day together. Although Ruby occasionally
feels as though her thoughts are not her own, she continues to trust Clancy and tries to learn from
him. But then one day he sexually assaults her. He uses his powers to keep her from fighting
against him and clouds her memory of the incident, so she cannot be sure it actually happened.

After the main characters reach it, the sanctuary is infiltrated by the child son of the
government's president, Clancy, who steals Ruby's powers and destroys the camp in a spar with
her. Ruby escapes with Chubs and Liam, using a signaling pendant to call Cate for help. Ruby
and Liam are saved by Cate's colleagues. Chubs is given medical aid, and Zu reunites with her
lost family. Cate releases Liam in exchange for Ruby enlisting herself as a soldier. Ruby bids
him farewell and erases his memories of her to sever their romantic ties. Liam departs the camp
while Ruby begins training. The novel ends by revealing that Clancy is raising his own army.

In conclusion, the Darkest Minds is a novel that starts out with the discovery that some illness is
killing children who have reached the age of ten. It’s an dystopian novel that explores themes of
generational conflict and the power of memory. The novel is set in a future where a contagious
disease called Idiopathic Adolescent Acute Neurodegeneration IAAN; kills nearly 90 percent of
all children and teenagers living in the United States, leaving the survivors with unusual abilities.
These survivors with superpowers are imprisoned throughout the country, and adults are so
afraid of their potential power that they have placed them in internment camps or targeted them
for death. The Darkest Minds were meant to represent that inherent drive that young people have
to make change, and how the world pushes back against it. It’s incredibly meaningful that this
kind of film is happening as more teen activists’ step onto the world’s stage and make their
voices heard.
