Structuralism
Structuralism is an intellectual movement which began in France in
the 1950s and is first seen in the work of the anthropologist Claude
Levi-Strauss and the literary critic Roland Barthes.

For structuralism, things cannot be understood in isolation - they have
to be seen in the context of the larger structures they are part of
(hence the term 'structuralism'). Structuralism was imported into
Britain mainly in the 1970s and attained widespread influence, and
even notoriety, throughout the 1980s.

In the structuralist approach to literature there is a constant
movement away from the interpretation of the individual literary
work and a parallel drive towards understanding the larger
structures which contain them.

Structuralist literary critics also endeavoured to study the underlying
rules, or grammar, of a work and not its idiosyncrasies. Another
famous distinction made by Saussure is that between “signifier” and
“signified”. For him, words do not refer directly to things. There is no
discernible connection between a word and the thing to which it
refers. Words are signs with two aspects: the “signifier” and the
“signified”. What is written or spoken is the “signifier” and what is
thought when the word is written or uttered is the “signified”.

This approach led Saussure to the idea that language should first of
all be seen as a system of signs (he himself did not use the term
“structure”). Secondly, those signs are in first instance arbitrary and
have not taken their specific form because of what they mean, but to
be different from other signs.

We need only a very superficial knowledge of a foreign language, or
even of a dialect form of our own language, to know that the words
we use to refer to the objects around us are different in other
languages. From that knowledge it is only a small step to the
realization that the link between a word and what it refers to must
be arbitrary.

Therefore, calling a “way” a “way” is not a necessity. There is clearly
nothing in what we call a “way” that dictates the particular word
“way”. In other words, the relation between the sign “way” and what
it refers to is indeed fundamentally arbitrary.

The principle of difference that gives rise to the signs (words) of which
language is made up gives rise to their meaning.
A strong point in Saussure‘s favour is that form and meaning cannot
be separated. If we change “ways” to “days” or “rays” we do have not
only a new form but also a new meaning. A linguistic sign – a word –

Binary Oppositions
The relationship between a cultural sign and what it expresses is not
necessarily completely arbitrary. A very basic mental operation
consists in the creation of opposites: some things are edible, others are
not; some creatures are dangerous, others are not. Classification in
terms of such oppositions, in which the opposites are related to each
other because they express either the presence or the absence of one
and the same thing (edibility, danger, and so on), seems a natural
thing to do. Man and woman constitute a binary pair, intimately
related yet in a crucial way each other‘s biological opposite; our right
hand and left hand constitute another closely related pair of
opposites.

Post-structuralism
Post-structuralism argues that the reader's response is what
constitutes the meaning of the text. It reflects the view of society being
shaped by the beliefs and values of a particular social group who
determines what is valued as truth and knowledge. At its core is the
belief that power exists and is resisted everywhere, particularly
through discourse.

3. Attitude to language:
Structuralists accept that the world is constructed through language,
in the sense that we do not have access to reality other than through
the linguistic medium. Post-structuralism is much more
fundamentalist in insisting upon the consequences of the view that, in
effect, reality itself is textual. Poststructuralism develops what
threaten to become terminal anxieties about the possibility of
achieving any knowledge through language.
