C. Lesson Proper

DESCRIPTION
 Zumba is not a classical dance, but rather a fitness
programme.
 It combines many dance and musical elements of Latin
American dance.
 Zumba is usually danced in a group in dance schools
or fitness studios, where choreographies are rehearsed
to a certain song.

HISTORY OF ZUMBA
 Zumba dancing only came into being by chance. In the 90s,
the Colombian fitness trainer Alberto “Beto” Perez forgot a
cassette with the music he usually played during his aerobics
classes. He then helped himself to the other cassettes he had
with him. It was mainly Latin American music, such as Salsa
music. He then had his aerobics class performed to this
unusual music, which he and his participants liked.

 The name Zumba comes from Colombian, where it means

something like “having fun” or “moving fast”. Perez
subsequently even patented the word and the newly acquired
dance and has been very successful with it.

PROPONENT
 Alberto "Beto" Pérez (born 15 March 1970), is a Colombian
dancer, choreographer, businessman, and Zumba instructor.
He created the exercise fitness program Zumba in the late
1990s which involves dance and aerobic exercise elements
with accompanying music, specifically Latin, and associated
martial arts moves, squats, lunges, and other aerobic
techniques.

BENEFITS
 It’s fun. The more you enjoy your exercise routine, the more
likely you are to stick with it. Many people say they have so
much fun dancing that they forget they are actually exercising.

 Great for weight loss. Zumba is a powerful exercise with a

600 to 1,000-calorie burn in just an hour.

 Tones your entire body. You may feel sore in places you
never knew existed, but it gets results. Zumba targets lots of
different muscle groups at once for total body toning.

 Boosts your heart health. You not only get aerobic benefits (it
really gets your heart rate up), you also get anaerobic benefits
– the kinds that help you maintain a good cardiovascular
respiratory system.

 Helps you de-stress. Turning your attention to dance, and

away from the daily grind, is a great way to relieve stress.
Studies show that exercise is very effective at reducing
fatigue, improving alertness and concentration, and
enhancing overall cognitive function.

 Improves coordination. In Zumba, your arms and legs are

generally moving in different directions so it requires a good
deal of coordination. Repeated practice improves
coordination and helps you feel more comfortable moving
your body.

 Makes you happy. Every time you exercise, you release

endorphins, which trigger positive feelings throughout the
body.

SAMPLE STEPS (A video is shown to students to further explain

these steps.)
 Basic Salsa Steps
 Basic Merengue Steps
 Basic Reggaeton Steps
 Basic Cumbia Steps
 Basic Samba Steps

D. Analysis
1. Why do you think is Zumba a “dance workout” instead of
either a mere dance or exercise?
2. Is Zumba important? Why?
3. If you are to design a physical program in your community
and you are asked to focus on Zumba dancing, how would
you do it?
4. Prior to this discussion, how would you define Zumba?
What was like to you?
5. In this time when TikTok catch the interests of people
especially young adults in dance challenges, how do you
think Zumba dance would hack its way up considering that
a session last for almost an hour long?

E. Abstraction

it?

basis? Why?

individuals throughout the world with his creativity and
eventual discovery of such a workout?
 Perform a Zumba step and explain to the class why it's
effective so thoroughly as a step in such a workout.
