WHAT IS FEVER?
Fever (Pyrexia) means an
increase in the body
temperature above 98.6ºF
(Fahrenheit) or 37ºC
(Celsius) -orally*. It is
usually a sign that the
body is ghting against
s o m e i n f e c t i o n
somewhere. Infection due
to bacteria, viruses or
fungi is the most common
cause of fever. The point at
which pyrexia becomes
hyper-pyrexia is arbitrary
- by some it is xed at
105ºF, by others at 106ºF
(oral). *Temperature can be
measured orally (below the
tongue - Sublingual), rectally
(anal), axillary (arm pit). Rectal
temperature is closest to the
core body temperature.
Sublingual temperatures are
more reliable, and generally
measure 0.6°C (1.0°F) lower
than rectal temperatures.
Axillary measurements are less
reliable, with axillary
temperatures ranging from
0.25°C to 0.85°C (0.4°F - 1.5°F)
lower than rectal
measurements.
THE MECHANISM OF
PRODUCTION OF FEVER
Many proteins, breakdown products
of proteins, and certain other
s u b s t a n c e s , s u c h a s
lipopolysaccharide toxins secreted
by bacteria cause the set point of the
hypothalamic thermostat to rise.
Substances that cause this effect
are called pyrogens. These
pyrogens, secreted by toxic bacteria
or released from degenerating
tissues of the body, cause fever
during disease conditions.
When the set-point of the
hypothalamic thermostat increases
to a higher level than normal, all the
mechanisms for raising the body
temperature are brought into play,
including heat conservation and
increased heat production.
Bacterial or other pyrogens rst
react with the soldiers of the body –
White Blood Cells (the neutrophils,
monocytes) and certain reticulo-
endothelial cells to form
endogenous pyrogens (EP).
EP is then transmitted in the blood
to the hypothalamus and has an
extremely powerful, direct effect on
the pre-optic heat-sensitive neurons
in increasing the set-point of the
hypothalamic thermostat to febrile
levels.
This obviously means that brain has
purposely desired to have the body's
temperature raised in response to
the body's armed forces’ intelligence
services.
