National High School STUDENT LEARNING GUIDE IN SCIENCE 7

Quarter I, Week 6

Lesson 6: Properties of Unsaturated or Saturated Solutions

MOST ESSENTIAL LEARNING COMPETENCY

S7MT-Ic-2: Investigate properties of unsaturated or saturated solutions.

In this set of activities, you should:

1. classify solution as to saturated or unsaturated; and
2. perform an experiment to investigate properties of saturated and unsaturated
solutions.

WHAT YOU NEED TO REMEMBER

Unlocking of Difficulties
Saturated Solution is a solution that contains the maximum amount of solute that
is capable of being dissolved.
Unsaturated Solution is a solution that contains less than the maximum amount of
solute that is capable of being dissolved.

Good day future scientist! I hope all is well. Prepare yourself because today you are going to prove
that you are practical and resourceful.
During our discussion on Lesson 4: Substances and Mixtures, we mentioned two types of mixtures.
We identified solution as a homogenous mixture wherein there are two or more components in which they appear as one
substance. So, what makes up the solution? Solution has two components- solute and solvent.

Components of Solution
1. Solute is the substance that is being dissolved. It is usually in solid form.
2. Solvent is the substance that does the dissolving. It is usually in liquid form.

Types of Solution
The type of solution depends on the amount of solute that the solvent can dissolve.
1. Saturated solution
If you keep adding sugar to a glass of coffee, it will eventually
stop dissolving and settle to the bottom. This solution is said to be
saturated.
2. Unsaturated solution
For many solids dissolved in liquid water, solubility tends to
correspond with increasing temperature. As water molecules heat up,
they vibrate more quickly and are better able to interact with and break
apart the solute.

YOUR TASKS!
PERFORMANCE TASK NO. 4

Reminder: DO NOT WRITE ANYTHING ON THIS STUDENT LEARNING GUIDE.

Write your answers on your answer sheet.

Enrichment Activity 1: Classify solution as to saturated or unsaturated. Write “ S ” if it is an example of Saturated

Solution or write “ U ” if it is an example of an Unsaturated Solution. (2 points each)

1. a teabag in a cup of hot water

2. a spoon of powdered juice drink in a drum of water
3. a sachet of 3-in-1 coffee in a casserole of hot water
4. a spoon of powdered juice drink in a glass of water
5. a tablespoon of milk powder in a one liter of water
Enrichment Activity 2: Go in your kitchen, look for water and coffee. Perform simple experiment by following the
procedure below to investigate properties of saturated and unsaturated solutions. In each step, classify the
solution as to saturated or unsaturated and give your observation. Copy the table and supply the needed
answer. (10 points)
Procedure Types of Solution Observation
(saturated or unsaturated)
1. 7 tablespoons of water to ½
tablespoon of coffee.
2. Add 1/2 tablespoon of coffee
3. Add another 1/2 tablespoon of
coffee
4. Add 1 cup of water
5. Add 2 cups of water
Note: Provide proof showing that you conducted the activity. You may send your picture thru messenger (to your subject
teacher) or pass a short explanation on how you conducted the activity during retrieval of your answer sheets.
