affects our older generation: osteoporosis. This is a
disease where bones show reduced density, usually
caused by insufficient exercise, reduced calcium
intake or food starvation. Bone tissue is constantly
being remodelled, meaning that bone is added or
removed, depending on nutrient availability and the
stress that the bone is under. Female polar bears,
however, undergo extreme conditions during every
pregnancy. Once autumn comes around, these
females will dig maternity dens in the snow and
will remain there throughout the winter, both

My comments: Some parts of the text (the
yellow and blue parts) are causing dificulty
and confusion to readers of the translation
unless the translator add the reference. The
green part contain a poor word choice
namely: “our old generation– thế hệ già;
food starvation-thiếu ăn, remodelled- bị thay
đổi”, and others which seem to be relatively
alright but cannot convey the full expression
in the context like “insufficient exercise -
thiếu tập thể dục, added - thêm vào, strong
and dense - mạnh và chắc”. And the blue
part contains a mistranslated structure -
relative clause “where the female bear -
trong đó gấu mẹ …”. From the translation,
there is no connection among those clauses
and they are very fragmented. In contrast,
another one is “where bones show reduced
density - mà xương thể hiện sự giảm mật
độ”, there is no need to refer to “mà”, which
can show that the translator didn’t handle
properly with translating relative clause.
With the yellow part, translator overused
the strategy literal translation, which can
cause the feeling of awkwardness for the
reader. Several words expressing the plural
form in Vietnamese (những) that shouldn’t
be added, for instance: “maternity denses in
the snow - những cái hang để sinh để trong
tuyết”. And the translator also
misunderstood the phrase “extreme
conditions” with the common meaning of
“thời tiết khắc nghiệt”, which is irrelevant in
the context. To sum up, the translation is
able to provide the basic understanding
 about the content of the text but the
translator still needs improving the word
choice and translating skills to give a more
general and comprehensive translation for
readers, and especially not exclusively using
word for word translation strategy.
