SELF-LEARNING HOME TASK (SLHT)

Subject: MATHEMATICS Grade: 4 Quarter : 3 Week: 3
MELC: Identify and describe the different kinds of quadrilaterals: square, rectangle,
parallelogram, trapezoid, and rhombus.
Competency Code: M4GE-IIIc-17
Lesson 2
Name ________________________________ Section ________ Date ________
School ________________________________ District ________________________
A. Discussion and Examples:
In geometry, a quadrilateral can be defined as a closed, two-dimensional shape which
has four straight sides. It is a polygon with 4 sides and 4 angles. We can find the shape of
quadrilaterals in various things around us, like in a chess board, a deck of cards, a kite, a tub of
popcorn, and sign boards.

Task 1: Look at the illustrations and answer the questions below.

What are the shapes that are formed from the illustrations shown?
What are the different kinds of quadrilateral?

Discussion for Task 1:

The shapes that are formed from the illustrations are square, rectangle, parallelogram,
rhombus and trapezoid. There are 5 different kinds of quadrilaterals.

Kinds of Quadrilaterals:

A parallelogram has 2 pairs of parallel sides and its opposite sides

are equal.

A rhombus is a parallelogram that has 4 equal sides.

A rectangle is a parallelogram that has 4 right angles.
Its opposite sides are equal.

A square is a parallelogram that has 4 equal sides and 4 right angles.

A trapezoid has only one pair of opposite sides that are parallel.

Task 2: Read the situation.

In the grade 4 class of Mrs. Ramos, some pupils prepared cut outs of different
quadrilaterals. Larry cut a square, Laura made a rectangle, Nelma prepared rhombus,
Alma cut a trapezoid and Rico made a parallelogram. Their outputs were neat and
they cleaned their mess after cutting.

What did the children prepare? What did they do after preparing the cut outs?
What are the different quadrilaterals they prepared?

Discussion for Task 2:

The children prepared cutouts of different quadrilaterals. Then they cleaned their mess
after cutting. They prepared cutouts of a square, a rectangle, a rhombus, a trapezoid and a
parallelogram.

A quadrilateral is a polygon with 4 sides and 4 angles.

KINDS OF QUADRILATERALS:

Shape Characteristics Name

Two pairs of parallel sides Parallelogram

Parallelogram with 4 equal sides Rhombus

Parallelogram with 4 right angles Rectangle

Parallelogram with 4 equal sides Square

and 4 right angles

Only one pair of parallel sides Trapezoid
