Definition
Reversible changes- A reversible change is a
change where no new materials are created and the
original material can be recovered.

Irreversible changes- This is when materials cannot

be changed back to how they were before and it forms
a new substance.
Solute- The substance that dissolves are called solute.
Solvent- The liquid in which the solute dissolves are
called solvent.

Solution- A solution is made up of a solute dissolved in

a solvent.

Answer the following questions

Q1. When you mix boiling water with jelly powder,
the mixture is a liquid. In the fridge it becomes
solid. Can we make jelly back to a liquid? Draw a
simple flow diagram to explain your answer.
Ans1 We can make solid jelly become liquid by
heating it.
Solid jelly heating
liquid jelly
cooling

Q2. Does boiling an egg cause reversible or

irreversible change?
Ans2.a. Boiling an egg is an irreversible change. The
liquid egg white and yolk become solid and cannot be
changed back to liquids.

Q 3. What does the rate of dissolving mean?

Ans- The rate of dissolving mean is how fast something

dissolves.
Q4. Name two factors that affect the rate of
dissolving.
Ans- 1.Stirring 2. Heating

Q5 a. How does heating affect the particles in a

solution?
Ans- Heating speeds up the particles and allows the
solute to spread through the solution more easily.

b. Explain how this affects dissolving.

Ans- It increases the rate of dissolving.

Q6. Explain why sugar will dissolve on its own in a

cup of cold water if we leave it long enough.
Ans- If we leave the sugar in a cup of water for long
enough it will dissolve because the molecules of sugar
will break down on its own.
