II. INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT

Reading is vital in all forms of learning. Listening is a pre-requisite skill

before you can learn the individual sounds of letter. It is easier to listen to the
vowel sounds within words than it is to listen to the sound alone.
Remember that we read and write words with long a, i, o, u sound using
silent letter e. However, learning to read also requires attentive listening.
Look at these words and listen attentively as I read them. Afterwards, it is
your turn to read.

Take note of the spelling pattern: a__e, i__e, o__e, u__e for some words
with long a, i, o, u sound. A Vowel-Consonant-e (VCe) pattern states that when a
single vowel is followed by a single consonant, then the letter 'e', the first vowel is
pronounced as a long vowel sound and the letter 'e' is silent. However, ‘Magic e’ is
only applicable to few words.
Here are other words with long a, i, o, u sound ending in e having different
spelling pattern from words above.
/ā/ /ī/ /ō/ /ū/
haste tie toe Sue
chaste die hoe blue
paste lie foe clue What do
you notice
with the symbols /ā/, /ī/, /ō/, and /ū/? Yes, there is a straight line on top. This
