CHAPTER II
This Chapter presents the related literature and studies which significantly contributed
to further deepen understanding of the study.
Technology have constantly changing the lives of every people, and this also applies
to the culture of shopping from small products to expensive branded clothes. One of which is
E-commerce, one of the fastest growing areas in the world. According to Michael Aldrich,
pioneer of online shopping in the 1980s, turned everything around when he launched a
system which allowed consumers, customers, agents, distributors, suppliers, and service
companies to be connected on-line to the corporate systems and allow business transactions
to be completed electronically in real-time. The increasing engagement in online shopping,
coupled with payment technologies available in the market, ensure robust growth and steady
development of local e-commerce businesses. (Visa Consumer Payments Attitude Study
2015).
The first World Wide Web server and browser, created by Tim Berners-Lee in 1990,
opened for commercial use in 1991. After that, Amazon. com launched its online shopping
site in 1995 and eBay was also introduced in 1995. Alibaba's sites Taobao and T’mall were
launched in 2003 and 2008, respectively
Filipino Adults
Based on their research, the largest proportion of people buying online once or twice
is found among those aged 55-74 (42 %). The youngest age group (16-24) was the larger age
group to shop three to five times (37 %) but tends to shop more online one to two times (38
%).
Considering the new normal, it’s expected that more and more people will come to
appreciate the convenience, lower prices, and exclusive deals and items that they have access
to when they shop online. Those who are new to online shopping might have a bit of trouble
navigating the merchants and retailers that they’ll find on the internet making it easier for
them to access reliable online shopping Philippine websites for their general and particular
needs.
The Philippines e-commerce industry has about 10 million customers every day. E-
commerce makes Filipinos more efficient, so they cannot lose time to traffic, they can work
more and generate more income for the country (Balci, 2017). He cited that heavy traffic is
one of the causes as to why people turn to online shopping. Even though not many Filipinos
are active cardholders, it does not hinder the growth of the e-commerce industry in the
country. Most people prefer to shop with their gadgets mostly of which are smartphones and
others to be desktops and laptops.
The shopping scene in the Philippines was mostly retail-based in the past few years as
logistics and the internet continue to become one of the main points of online shopping in the
country. It wasn’t until the pandemic happened, which forced the government to go on strict
lockdown a few months ago that online shopping has been massively amplified.
Pre-pandemic, e-commerce giants such as Lazada and Shopee are becoming more
prominent in the market at a gradual pace. Despite the more relaxed situation then, many
Filipinos remained alienated from online shopping. It wasn’t until a few months ago during
the lockdown that online shopping has been amplified further and integrated further into the
lives of Filipinos. In fact, a report published by Facebook has found that the e-commerce
industry has been propelled further by the pandemic.
