Section one – background
1.1 Support service mission statement
The mission of support services is to provide a range of advice services to
students that fully reflect the needs of the group as a whole and of the individuals
within it. The services provided are to ensure that students are supported to
better enable learning, progression and success.
To achieve this mission support services will operate within quality frameworks,
and will seek to expand the service base in line with the increasing diversity of
the student profile and the different needs that present themselves within our
academic community.
1.2 Context
The College is to relocate to the Greenwich peninsular in 2009. This will present
Student Services with new challenges, amongst which will be the increasingly
diverse profile of learners. Plans for relocation sit alongside increasing
legislative responsibilities – such as the Disability Equality Duty, and the
forthcoming Age Equality Legislation. It is clear that the positive duties of the new
legislation will place additional requirements on College services, and as a small
College, it is likely that the full range of services required cannot be provided
unless shared models of provision are developed with partner Colleges,
including Rose Bruford, Trinity Laban and Goldsmiths.
The introduction of fees and bursaries will impact on the service – more preentry
enquiries from students and parents, higher levels of student debt, and more
pressure on students to succeed within the shortest timescale possible are all
likely. Students are already approaching Education as ‘savvy’ consumers who
are more likely to challenge provision as the cost to them increases.
Potential changes in the way disabled students are funded will also impact on
service provision. It is likely that allocations made to individual students will
cease and funding provided directly to Colleges for the support of disabled
students. There will be an increasing requirement for educational institutions to
work in collaboration with external providers – for example Health and community
care, social service and so on. The Learning Skills Council is moving towards a
regional model of funding for students with disabilities or additional learning
needs.
The impact for the College will be that student facing services will more than ever
need to ensure high levels of effectiveness, forward plan the specifics of student
support, be clearly accountable, transparent, and accessible.
