A. ELICITING: The elements inside the box are arranged according to their atomic
Reviewing previous lesson or structure. We can determine the number of protons, neutrons and electrons
presenting the new lesson les in an atom by looking at the information given in this table
Let’s look at a familiar element, sodium

Na
Sodium
22.99 (23)

Q: What is the atomic number for sodium?

A: Sodium has an atomic number of 11.

Q: How many protons does it have?

A: Sodium has eleven protons; eleven is the Atomic Number, which is
Equal to the number of protons.

Q: How many electrons does it have?

A: Sodium has eleven electrons; eleven is the Atomic Number, which is
Equal to the number of protons

Q: How many neutrons does it have?

A: Sodium has twelve neutrons; eleven is the Atomic Number, which is
Equal to the number of protons
B. ENGAGEMENT: Reading Passage:
Establishing a purpose for the lesson
C. EXPLORATION:
Presenting examples/instances of the
new lesson/ Performing Experiments
and Activities

PART I. Answer the questions based on the above reading.

1. What is an isotope?
Answer: When an atom of a given element has the same number of
protons, but differs in the number of neutrons,
2. What does the number next to isotopes signify?
Answer: The atomic mass signifies the number next to the isotope.
3. How can you tell isotopes of the same element apart?
Answer: Isotopes will have a different atomic mass than other atoms that
make up the same element.

D. EXPLANATION: Activity

Discussing new concepts and 1. Fill in the missing information
practicing new skills #2 2. Refer to a Periodic Table and the Key below to fill out this table for each
element.
3. Assemble the nucleus using the proper number of large colored and white
marshmallows. Stick them together with toothpicks.
4. Select the proper number of small colored marshmallows (all one color) as
your electrons. Attach them one at a time to the nucleus with toothpicks.
5. Turn the lithium atom into an ion, and note the information.
6. Turn either the lithium atom or the beryllium atom into an isotope. Record
what you did.

Assessment 3)  How do the isotopes of an element differ? How are they the same?
Answer: They have different #s of neutrons; same number of protons

concepts and skills in daily living  A neutral atom is an atom with an equal number of electrons and
protons, which is equal to the atomic number. The atoms you

abstractions about the lesson
 Ions are atoms with extra electrons or missing electrons. The
atom’s electron configuration determines if it is an ion. Two
examples of elements that form ions are sodium (Na) and chlorine
(Cl), which form an ionic bond to make Sodium Chloride, or table
salt.

 Isotopes are different types of atoms of the same element, each

having a different mass number. Isotopes of an element have
nuclei with the same number of protons (the same atomic
number), but different numbers of neutrons.
