Week 5

“If you cannot measure it, you cannot D

Lord Kelvin
ne

I. Introduction
Measurement is fundamental to science. In medicine measurement underpins
most clinical decisions. The development of disease diagnostic criteria, evaluation of
ri

change in patients' condition over time, and determining prognosis are clinical
he

processes that require some form of observation and measurement or as part of a formal
procedure. Measurement has often been antecedent to disease definition itself.
at

II. Learning Objectives

At the end of Module 3, the students are expected to:
K

1. Differentiate Metric and English system

2. Perform conversion on different system of units
3. State the importance of measurements.

III. Topics and Key Concepts

Measurements (System of Units)
The metric system is an internationally agreed decimal system of measurement
created in France in 1799. The International System of Units (SI), the official system of
measurement in almost every country in the world, is based upon the metric system.

In the metric system, each basic type of measurement (length, weight, capacity) has one
basic unit of measure (meter, gram, liter). Conversions are quickly made by multiplying
or dividing by factors of 10. It is as simple as moving the decimal point to the right (for
smaller prefixes) or to the left (for larger prefixes).
While the metric system was lawfully accepted for use in the United States in
1866, the US has not adopted the metric system as its "official" system of measurement.

ap
The US English System of measurement grew out of the manner in which people
secured measurements using body parts and familiar objects. For example, shorter

.Y
ground distances were measured with the human foot and longer distances were
measured by paces, with one mile being 1,000 paces. Capacities were measured with
household items such as cups, pails (formerly called gallons) and baskets.

A. LINEAR MEASUREMENTS

The term linear measurement is applied to the measurement of length, diameter,

thickness, internal and external dimensions.

Example:
1. How many meters are in 35.7 kilometers? D
Ans. 35.7 km x (1000 meters)/(1 km) = 35,700m

2. How many milligrams are in 0.3467 dekagram?

ne

Ans. 0.3467 dag x (10 g)/1dag x 1000mg/1g = 3467 mg

B. MASS OR WEIGHT MEASUREMENT

ri

The term linear measurement is applied to the measurement of how much matter
something it contains while weight is a measure of how strongly gravity pulls. But mass
he

and weight are different from each other and they have different units that can be used.
Unit for mass is in kilograms, grams, pounds, ounces and others, while weight is in
Newtons.

Example:
A newborn infant weighs 8 pounds (lb) 6 ounces (oz) at birth. How many kilograms
(kg) does he weigh?
D
Steps:
1. First convert the weight to all ounces.
ne

8lb 6oz = ? oz
2. Multiply 8 lb by 16 (16oz = 1 lb)
8 x 16 = 128
ri

3. Add the 6oz to the 128 oz to find the total ounces

128 + 6 = 134 oz
4. Find an English-metric equivalent for this proble.
he

1 oz = 0.028kg
5. Set up a proportion: 1 oz: 0.028kg = 134 oz: X kg
at

6. Multiply the extremes

K

1 x X = 1X
7. Multiply the means.
0.028 x 134 = 3.752
8. Write as means equals extremes.
1X = 3.752
9. Divide both sides by 1 to find the answer of 3. 752 kg
X = 3.752 kg

The infant weighs 8lb 6 oz (134 oz) or 3.752kg at birth.
