यदागमास्तद्गुणीभूतास्तद्ग्रहणेन गृह्यन्ते

न वाऽर्थवतो ह्यागमस्तद्गुणीभूतस्तद्ग्रहणेन गृह्यते यर्ान्यत्र ॥ न वा एष दोषः । क िं ािणम्? अर्थवत आगमस्तद्गुणीभूतोऽर्थवद्ग्रहणेन

गृह्यते। यर्ान्यत्र। तद्यर्ा अन्यत्राकप अर्थवत आगमोऽर्थवद्ग्रहणेन गृह्यते।

A परिभाषा is explained using the four criteria: १) प्रयोजन २) अर्थ ३) प्रमाण ४) अकनत्यता (दोष)

Consider प्र+कन+दा+(पु ् >प्)+(णणच्>इ)+(कतप्>कत)

The पु ् augment (आगम्) is received through 7-3-36 अकतथह्रीव्लीिीक्नूयीक्ष्माय्यातािं पुङ्णौ Kashika says:
अकतथ ह्री व्ली िी क्नूयी क्ष्मायी इत्येतेषामङ्गानामा ािान्तानािं च पुगागमो भवकत णौ पितः । That is to say the पु ् is done
to the root दा. This root दा is of the the type घु from sutra 1-1-20 दाधा घ्वदाप् and thus the sutra
8-4-17 नेगदथ नदपतपदघुमास्यकतहन्तन्तयाकतवाकतद्राकतप्साकतवपकतवहकतशाम्यकतणचनोकतदे न्तिषु च । कन इत्येतस्य
उपसगथस्थाकिकमतादुतिस्य न ािस्य ण ािादे शो भवकत गद नद पत पद घु मा स्याकत हन्तन्त याकत वाकत द्राकत प्साकत वपकत वहकत
शाम्यकत णचनोकत दे न्ति इत्येतष
े ु पितः । finds scope, which can turn the prefix कन > णण

The question before us is whether 8.4.17 can function on दाप् because 8.4.17 is only providing
an injunction for घु (दा) and not for दाप्

Hence this परिभाषा is imitated यदागमास्तद्गुणीभूतास्तद्ग्रहणेन गृह्यन्ते

That is to say a reference to any metaliguistic element (here कन उपसगथ before दा of the type घु)
can be also interpreted as an reference to the said metalinguistic element including the
augment (here दाप् where in दा has an additional पु ् आगम्) which has become an integral part
of the said metalinguisitc element
