Lesson Introduction [Timing: 5 Mins]
Write an equation on the board 2𝑥 + 3 = 5 and then show how to find the value of 𝑥.
Then write another equation 2𝑥 + 3𝑦 = 8 and then ask students how to find the value
of 𝑥 and 𝑦 from the given equation and then only introduce the topic: Solving System
of Linear equations using comparison strategy.
Lesson Development [Timing: 20 Mins]
There are several methods for solving a system of equations algebraically.
One method is the comparison strategy, which can be used when both equations in the
system have the same variable term isolated. For example:
𝑦 = −𝑥 + 5 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑦 = 𝑥 + 2

⇒𝑦=𝑦 To find 𝑦, put 𝑥 = 1.5 in 𝑦 = 𝑥 + 2


⇒ −𝑥 + 5 = 𝑥 + 2 ⇒ 𝑦 = 1.5 + 2
⇒5−2=𝑥+𝑥 ⇒ 𝑦 = 3.5
⇒ 3 = 2𝑥 Hence, 𝑥 = 1.5 𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑦 = 3.5
