Lesson Introduction [Timing: 5 Mins]
How do you find the area of a triangle? You might have learnt in the lower
classes that the area of any triangle can be calculated by using the formula
1
A= b×h, where we need to know the base and height of the triangle to find its area.
2
Today, we will learn how to find the area of a triangle without having to know the base
and height of the given triangle if vertices of a triangle are known/given. Then
introduce the topic. Calculating area of a triangle with determinants.

Lesson Development [Timing: 20 Mins]

Tr. Will explain and demonstrate on how to calculate the area of a triangle whose
vertices are given on the board using the examples given in the textbook.
Area of a triangle whose vertices are (𝑥1 , 𝑦1 ), (𝑥2 , 𝑦2 ), (𝑥3 , 𝑦3 ) can be calculated using
1
𝐴= [𝑥1 (𝑦2 − 𝑦3 ) + 𝑥2 (𝑦3 − 𝑦1 ) + 𝑥3 (𝑦1 − 𝑦2 )] and this expression is the

expansion of the determinant |𝑥2 𝑦2 1| and hence the area of a triangle whose
2
𝑥3 𝑦3 1
vertices are are (𝑥1 , 𝑦1 ), (𝑥2 , 𝑦2 ), (𝑥3 , 𝑦3 ) is given by:
𝑥1 𝑦1 1
1
∆ = |𝑥2 𝑦2 1|
2
𝑥3 𝑦3 1
Ex.1 Find the area of the triangle whose vertices are (−2, −3), (3,2), (−1, −8).
(Solving on the board)
Collinear: Two or more points are said to be collinear if they all lie on the same
straight line.
Note: If the area of a triangle using the given vertices/point of the given triangle using
determinant is equal to zero, then it is said to be collinear, if the area is non-zero, then it
is said to be non-collinear.
Ex.2 Using determinants, prove that the following points are collinear.
i) (11,7), (5,5), (−1,3)

(Tr. Will also demonstrate by solving on the board)

Student Activity [Timing: 10 Mins]
Let students to solve the following questions from exercise 2(c) Ch 2-12 in a pair.
Q1. Find the area of the triangle whose vertices are
i) (−8, −2), (−4, −6), (−1, 5) Ans: 28 sq.units

Q2. Using determinants, prove that the following points are collinear.
i) (0,3), (4,6), (−8, −3).

Monitoring/ Follow-up Activity [Timing: 10 Mins]

Move around the class and ensure all students solve the questions given in the activity
and after they finished, let students to cross-check with their friend’s solution.
Provide guidance and support to the students if needed and provide the solution/answer
to confirm their answer.
Lesson Closure [Timing: 5 Mins]
Summarize the lesson taught.
Assign Q.3 and Q.5 from exercise 2 (c) Page Ch 2-12 as a homework.
Q3. Using determinants, find the area of the triangle whose vertices are
(4, −2), (−2,3), (3,5). Are the given points collinear?
Q5. Show that the points (𝑏, 𝑐 + 𝑎), (𝑐, 𝑎 + 𝑏) and (𝑎, 𝑏 + 𝑐) are collinear.
