Learning Activities
Teacher’s Activity Pupil’s Response

Activity #1: What is your clock? (Class routine /

M Kumustahan)
1. The teacher will present to the class four
types of clock and gadgets where one could
look for time (wall clock, alarm clock,
Motivate cellphone/tablet, and wristwatch).
2. The pupils will choose a type of clock that
they frequently use by clicking on the
choices
3. The teacher will call three students to share
how the clock helps them for the day.

Activity #2: “Sam’s Adventure” (Review

Activity)
1. The teacher will provide an activity
entitled "Sam’s Adventure." In this activity,
the teacher will tell a story about Sam’s
everyday life.
2. The pupils will then be asked to help Sam
through his adventure by telling what
time is shown in the clock.

Story: Sam woke up facing the sun’s bright

morning rays. He sat up and clasped his hands.
“Thank you for another morning that you blessed
us today.” he prayed. After praying, he stretched
his body while looking at the wall clock beside his
bed.

Answer: 7:30 a.m.

It’s 7:30 in the morning. Now, aware of the time,

Sam picks up his phone to browse for news for a
minute. As he scrolls through the pages, a new
notification pop-up on his screen. It’s a message
from his friend Albert inviting him to a meeting
for their homework. Attached in the message is a
picture of a clock indicating the time for the
meeting.

Answer: 10:00 a.m.

That’s right! They’ll have a meeting at 10:00

o’clock in the morning. So Sam decided to take a
bath and eat breakfast for the day. While doing
these activities, he felt thankful that he was born
in the current era. He has electricity to heat the
water for his bath. He also has access to a
microwave and a toaster that makes cooking
easy. As he finished his morning routine, he
looked at the clock again.

Answer: 8:20 a.m.

PHILIPPINE NORMAL UNIVERSITY
INSTITUTE OF TEACHING AND LEARNING

It’s only 8:20 o’clock. Sam still has an hour and

forty minutes before the meeting. He decided to
turn on the T.V. to entertain himself as he waited
for the meeting time. The time moved on and so
he looked at the clock again. Answer: 10:15 a.m.

Oh no! It’s already 10:15! He is already fifteen

minutes late. Sam hurriedly turned off the T.V.
and opened the link for the meeting. There his
friend greeted him and asked why he was late. “I
lost track of time while watching the T.V.” Sam
said. “I see. I thought something important came
up. Should we start now?” his friend, Albert,
replied to him. After some time, Sam heard his
stomach growling. He looked at the clock. Answer: 11:45 a.m.

It’s already 11:35. “Albert, should we wrap this up

now? It’s already time for lunch.” Sam said. “Yes.
I’m also hungry so I think we should finish this
now.” Albert said while rubbing his stomach. So,
Sam and Albert finished the last part of their
homework and ended the meeting.

As Sam is preparing his lunch, he suddenly

thought that although only half of the day had
passed he felt that he’d already done a great
adventure.

Activity #3: Draw Mr. Clock Face

The teacher will show the following problem

using a Canva presentation and the pupils will
draw their answer on the provided interactive
screen.

Direction: Draw the hands of the clock to show

the time asked for.

1. 30 minutes after 1:00

E 2. 45 minutes after 12:30 2. 1:15

3. 10 minutes before 3:00

3. 2:50

4. 15 minutes before 10:00 4. 10:45

5. 20 minutes after 9:45

5. 10:05
Guide Questions:
1. How did you get your answers?
2. What did you notice from this activity?

The teacher will discuss the topic with the class.

D Gabriel slept at 8:30 p.m. and woke up at 5:00 a.m.

sleep did he get?
Discuss
Whenever you’re figuring out how long
something takes, you’re finding the elapsed time.

Elapsed time is the difference between two

times
PHILIPPINE NORMAL UNIVERSITY
INSTITUTE OF TEACHING AND LEARNING
Grade 4 MATH

There are different ways to solve for elapsed time.

1. By using a table
2. By using a number line

By using a table

From To Duration

8:30 p.m.

5:00 a.m.

Total ?

We will be writing the start time at the first row

column titled from.

From To Duration

8:30 p.m. 9:30 p.m. 1 hour

5:00 a.m.

Total ?

An hour is a duration or a length of time. It is

equivalent to 60 minutes.

By using an interval of an hour, we are going to

list the time until we reach the end time.

From To Duration
PHILIPPINE NORMAL UNIVERSITY
INSTITUTE OF TEACHING AND LEARNING
Grade 4 MATH

8:30 p.m. 9:30 p.m. 1 hour

9:30 p.m. 10:30 p.m. 1 hour

10:30 p.m. 11:30 p.m. 1 hour

11:30 p.m. 12:30 a.m. 1 hour

12:30 a.m. 1:30 a.m. 1 hour

1:30 a.m. 2:30 a.m. 1 hour

2:30 a.m. 3:30 a.m. 1 hour

3:30 a.m. 4:30 a.m. 1 hour

4:30 a.m. 5:00 a.m. 30 minutes

Total 8 hours and 30

minutes

After listing the time per hour interval, we will add

all of the hour and minutes under the column
titled duration. The answer that we will get will be
the elapsed time that we are looking for.

By using the number line

At one end of the number line, we are going to

write the start time while the end time will be
written at the opposite end.

We will be adding 30 minutes to the start time to

get a simpler time for easier counting.

Starting at 9:00 p.m., we will count the number of

hours until 12:00 a.m., the line between night and
day. So the time that passes will be 3 hours.
PHILIPPINE NORMAL UNIVERSITY
INSTITUTE OF TEACHING AND LEARNING
Grade 4 MATH

Lastly, we will count the remaining hours starting

from 12:00 a.m. until 5:00 a.m. which happen to be
5 hours.

From the plotted time, the hours and minutes

that we got are 30 minutes, 3 hours and 5 hours.
We are going to add these three given to get the
total elapsed time.

30 minutes + 3 hours + 5 hours = 8 hours and 30

minute

Sample problem #1
Athena started watching a movie at 7:20 a.m. She
finished watching it at 9:10 p.m. How long was the
movie?

Answer: The movie is 1 hour and 50 minutes

long.

Sample problem #2
Rica is allowed to play digital games on weekends
for a maximum of one and a half hours. She
started at 5:25 p.m. By what time is she expected
to finish?

From To Duration

5:25 p.m. 35 minutes

6:30 p.m. 30 minutes

6:30 p.m. 25 minutes

Total 90 minutes
(1 hour and 30
minutes)

Answer: Rica is expected to finish playing

digital games by 6:55 p.m.

Activity #4: Elapsed Table

The pupils will answer and complete the

following table. The teacher will be using an
interactive board where students will write their
answer.
