PART II
NARRATIVE REPORT

I. Introduction/Rationale/Objectives
Reading is one of the basic English skills which should be mastered by the students.
It is a process of transferring information from the writer to the reader. It is an important skill
in our daily life because it gives many advantages for us. Reading is similar to listening in
which it is a receptive skill; however, it involves students’ interaction in the form of visual
input of language. Interaction means that reading is most definitely an active process where
the students should be active in reading the text; they will predict and get the points of the
text. There should be connection between the readers’ knowledge and their prediction with
the text. Through reading, we can obtain many kinds of information which can expand our
knowledge.

In reference to the Deped Memorandum No.179, s. 2019 Hamon: Bawat Bata

Bumabasa, schools across the country are tasked to help learners develop their reading skills.
However, such initiatives are still not enough based on the recent results of the Division
Reading Assessment at Subic National High School. In order to address this gaps, there is a
need to strengthen the reading proficiency of every learner and to nurture a culture of reading
which is a requisite skill in all content areas.

To attain this goal, SNHS English Department shall strengthen Every Child A Reader
Program of the School by conducting activities such as LAC Session for teachers. The
activity aims to: 1) Enhance the knowledge of the teachers on the ways to identify learner’s
reading level and ability and effectively teach and guide their students to read better; 2)
Challenge teachers to promote love for reading; 3) Capacitate teachers to become effective
reading teachers; and 4) Strengthen the DepEd’s Every Child A Reader Program making
every SNHS learner a reader.

Reading is more than an instructional program. It requires heart and soul, good
modeling, and an appropriate environment. Interest and cooperation from home are essential
if we are to teach children to love reading.

To continue support the celebration of the National Reading Month every

November, English Department of Subic National High School conducted a LAC Session
with a topic—Respond to Every Child A Reader Program presented by Teacher April Joy D.
Valdez. This activity aims to capacitate teachers to become effective reading teachers.
Teacher must have proper training because no matter how good the curriculum is if the
teacher lacks of training in teaching reading this will not still be possible.
The flow of the session was as follows: Prayer, Thought for the Day, Opening
Remark, Game and Session Proper. The prayer, thought for the day, and game was facilitated
by the speaker. Challenging opening remark was given by the head of the department, Head
Teacher III Elvira E. Abella. According to her, the topic was very timely because of the
celebration of the National Reading Month. Last part of her talk was very challenging because
she challenged her teachers to commit themselves in the reading program of the school to
help the struggling readers of their own class.
For the guidance of the participants, the speaker prepared an outline of the
subtopics. The speaker started with the definition of reading to be followed by defining
diagnostic approach then the big six, reading level assessment, showed also some profile
analysis wherein the participants tried to identify the problems that they encounter, lastly is
how to design home corrective and remedial reading programs especially during the new
normal set up.
The session was attended by 24 English teachers of Subic National High School.
