Here are some of the waste materials in our surroundings.
4.2 Activity Write each material in their proper column.
10 minutes

Guide Questions:
1. What materials did you use in the activity?
2. What are the properties of each of the waste materials?
3. How did you sort the materials?
4. How did you classify them?
5. Can these materials be made into useful products?

Recyclable materials can be made into useful products.

Identify some waste materials that can be found at home,
classrooms, and offices that can also be made into useful
products. Name as many as you can.

• Waste management is the precise name for collection,

disposal, or recycling of wastes.
• Proper segregation of waste materials should be observed.
Classifying materials is important to know whether the materials are
to be reduced, reused, or recycled in making useful products.

Reduce => make less garbage. For example, instead of buying juice
boxes for lunch, buy a large container of juice and use a
washable single-serving container to take it to school.
=> buy items in refillable containers

Recycle => turn an item into another useful item. For example, scrap
paper from the classroom might be turned into newspaper or
paper bags when sent to the recycling plant.

Reuse => Donate or sell re-usable items.

 Use both sides of paper and printing and re-use as scratch paper,
gift wrapper, etc.
 Consider the potential life span or durability when buying new
products.
 Buy durable food/storage containers and reuse them instead of
using foil, plastic bags/wrap.
The Impact of Recycle, Reduce, and Reuse
The result of doing all three of these behaviors is a vast reduction
in waste. The effects of less waste are positive for the environment,
human health, and the economy. For example, these 3 R practices
can help to extend the use of natural resources so that they are not
used at a faster pace than the world population is increasing.

Making a Change
It is more important than ever to reduce the amount of natural
resources being used in manufacturing processes, as well as
increasing recycling rates and reusing materials. Given the benefits of
the recycle, reduce, and reuse, the goal of more and more
governments is to adopt an approach that integrates the 3 Rs within it

Look at the materials in the below. Think about how the materials
4.3 Analysis
2 minutes can be recycled. Write the answer in your notebook

A. Write YES if the situation has a GOOD EFFECT in the

4.4 Abstraction environment and NO if it does not have a good effect.
6 minutes 1. Sewing clothes
2. Building houses
3. Making toys
4. Burning garbage
5. Cutting of trees
6. Throwing plastic bags in the rivers
7. Selling the empty bottles of patis.
8. Collecting old newspapers and magazines then sell
9. Placing left-over food in trash can.
10. Making doormats using old sacks and strips of cloth
What recyclable materials were used to produce these
4.5 Application products?
5 minutes How do you make a wastebasket out of old magazine?
You fold strips of magazines so that they are long and skinny. The
width will be the height of your base. You first coil one strip upon itself and
paint some mod podge on so it will stay. Then you take the next piece and
coil that around the first, gluing as you go, and so on until you like the size.

Now that you already know how to organize the steps or

procedure in designing a product, it’s about time for you to design your
own.
After you have finished your product, complete the phrases below:
1. My product is .
2. I feel while designing the product.
3. I felt after finishing the designed product.

Choose the best answer from the choices and

explain it briefly.
4.6 Assessment Analysis of Learners’ Product
10 minutes

B. List down ways on how to dispose of each

material below.
Write your answer in your notebook/ answer
sheet.

Make a badge pin that promotes the 3R (recycle,

4.7 Assignment reuse, reduce). Use recyclables like jar lids as your
badge and decorate it with old magazines to make a
2 minutes
statement badge. You may give this to your friend to
remind them to practice the 3rs or sell them as a
fund-raising project to support activities for
environmental protection or you can
make a poster/collage using the recyclable materials
that can be found in your home.
If people continue to discard waste without using recycle, reduce,
4.8 Concluding Activity and reuse strategies, there are major health risks. People who live near
3 minutes dumpsites for example are exposed to smoke from PCBs and HIV from
hospital waste.
5. Remarks
6. Reflections
A. No. of learners who earned 80% in the evaluation. C. Did the remedial lessons
work? No. of learners who have
caught up with the lesson.
B. No. of learners who require additional activities D. No. of learners who continue
for remediation. to require remediation.
E. Which of my learning strategies worked well? Why
did these work?
F. What difficulties did I encounter which my
principal or supervisor can help me solve?
G. What innovation or localized materials did I
use/discover which I wish to share with other
teachers?
