Philippine Physical Activity Pyramid Revisited
The Philippine Physical Activity Pyramid can help you understand the concepts of which types of activities
are best for your fitness and health. The various types of activities in the pyramid developed different parts of fitness
and provide different fitness and health benefits. For optimum benefits, one should aim to perform activities from all
parts of the pyramid each week. As you can see in the pyramid, those activities at or near the bottom may need to
be done more frequently than those near the top of the pyramid.
The lowest level of the pyramid is where the lifestyle physical activities are found. These are the day-to-day
tasks and activities that should be done as often as possible. They include light physical activities such as walking
the dog, going up a flight or stairs, cleaning one’s bedroom. Recreational and aerobics activities dominates the
second lowest level. It is recommended that one should do these activities three (3) to five (5) times a week. The
third level is leisure activities and exercises for strength and flexibility. These should be done two (2) to three (3)
times a week. The top level should be done minimally or not more than thirty (30) minutes a day. It is true that an
individual needs to take time to recover from daily stresses and prepare for new challenges, so periods of rests and
sleep are important for good health. However, general inactivity or sedentary living is discouraged during the hours
when you are awake.
