Art and Design
Key topics over Component 1 Coursework worth 60% of GCSE grade
year 10
Students have worked on their Component 1-Personal Investigation
project following the theme of ‘The Natural World’ this year. This is
worth 60% of their overall GCSE.
We follow the artist cycle structure for each artist we investigate to
ensure we have the appropriate evidence of work covering each
assessment objective.

• Students started work on their Artist cycles accompanied by
theory and skill based workshops from their Art teacher.
• The workshops carried out by teachers to support the Artist
Cycle work included:
o Art Elements crash course.
o Annotation writing.
o Photography workshop.
o Sketchbook presentation
o Observational drawing techniques.
o Monochromatic material techniques (tonal pencil,
charcoal, ink, pen).
o Dry coloured material techniques (Soft pastels, oil pastels,
colouring pencils)
o Paint techniques (Water colour paint, acrylic paint)
o Example Artist cycles.
o Presentations of exemplar GCSE student work.
o Assessment workshops.
o Art History workshop
o Personal Response Merging Compositions
• Students had artists to explore both provided and
independently selected to ensure their portfolio of work follows
their interests and style.
Students on track will have accomplished 9 complete cycles with
a focus on their theme of ‘The Natural World’.

Continuation of Component 1 –Personal Sub Theme

Students have now selected their own sub theme. This theme will be
followed for the remainder of the component 1 duration.
The sub theme has been carefully selected by each individual to
accommodate personal interests, creative outlets and potential
direction for further study courses.

This Sub Theme focus follows the same structure of the artist cycle-
the expectation is that students explore a plethora of artists, styles,
techniques and media, across contemporary and historical artists.

Students on track should have completed:

• Moodboard
• MindMap
• Photography
• 2 artist cycles for their personal sub-theme
All before summer break.
Useful resources • Students should use the AQA Fine Art Specification 8202/C and
exemplar work on their website to view previous years
examples for each grade boundary to support their exploration,
observations and experimentations.
https://www.aqa.org.uk/subjects/art-and-design/gcse/art-and-design-8201-8206
• Students may use the bank of resources populated on their Art
& Design Microsoft Team in the Files section under class
materials. On there they will find all resources on:
o GCSE Art & Design Course Overview
o Visual Mind Maps
o The Artist Cycle
o Practical Material techniques
o Annotation writing
o Personal Response Pieces
o Assessment
• Students should discover new media to explore through sites
such as Pinterest and YouTube tutorials.

Compulsory During the summer break students are expected to work on the
Summer Work following:
• Complete all unfinished Artists Cycles and work on personal
targets from the start point theme of ‘The Natural World’ and
own ‘Subtheme’ 12 cycles in total (minimum expectation)
• Complete a merging composition following from the final week
workshops of ‘Merging’

In the first term when we return in Year 11, students will be

presenting their Merging composition and should have this ready in
their sub theme digital powerpoint. This merging piece will account
strongly towards Assessment Objective 4.

Students will then begin to engage in new media technique workshops

delivered by the teacher, to support and ensure a broad selection of
media is showcased.

The media technique workshops should be explored to suit students

sub themes and concepts.

Student will continue with artist cycles using the media techniques
shared, master their skills in applying media and prepare for a Mock
final piece.
Creating composition ideas and a practice piece before finishing
component 1 with a Final piece submission.

Compulsory  Using a range of referenced sources found through your independent
Summer Work research, prepare a short essay (750 words) which answers the question
below:
In recent years, the demand and supply of electric and hybrid vehicles has
increased. Analyse a range of market-based and interventionist factors which
best explain why this happened.
The question is asking, in your judgement, which factors have played the biggest
role in influencing demand and supply. This means you need to consider how the
factors above play a part. You may need to think about externalities, market
failure and government intervention strategies and policies for reducing market
failure.
