group and 100 mm for single pile.

All the piles shall be concreted 1m above the cut-off

level.

6.3.4 Rotary Drilling Method

In this method pile bore shall be done using Rotary drilling rig up to
required depth using temporary guide casing/Bentonite slurry.

This method can be adopted in all types of soils for drilling operations. A
hydraulic drilling rig can be employed for cased bored piles with the casing
driven directly through the rotary head.
The piling boring operation shall be duty sequenced. Rotary Drilling with
Bentonite Mud method is adopted for boring.

1. Verticality of Kelly bar and drill mast shall be checked before boring
operation by plumb line/spirit level/level indicator attached with the rig.
2. Initially Auger/Drilling tool attached to Kelly bar will be centered on the
pile point and necessary reference points with respect to centre of pile
will be marked at right angles.
3. The boring shall be carried using drill auger /bucket initially to few
meters.
4. Then install the temporary casing 3-4m long using the rotary drive with
casing head adopter arrangement. The verticality and centre line of
casing should be always checked during installation using plumb
bob/spirit level & reference points respectively.
5. The centre line of guide casing shall be checked with respect to the
reference points before continuing further boring.
6. The bore shall be filled with bentonite slurry fed from bentonite tanks.
The bentonite slurry filled in the bore imparts stability by applying
hydrostatic pressure on wall against the impermeable membrane thin
film along the bore hole.
7. Bentonite head shall be maintained throughout the period. Head will be 2
m above ground water table.
8. Pumping of Bentonite is by high pressure pumps/ Diaphragm pumps thus
carry cuttings to surface, which will be passed through settling tank to
remove cuttings and spoils prior to recirculation.
9. Quality of slurry during preparation, boring and prior to concreting shall

10. The depth of drilling shall be constantly measured in regular intervals

till reaching the toe of pile. Soil sample will be collected and stored in
polythene bag for reference.
11. Soil samples shall be taken at frequent interval or change of strata
whichever occurs earlier and should be stored in double polythene bag
with suitable tags.
12. Use cleaning bucket to remove the sediments from the pile bottom.
13. Check the pile length using sounding chain. Effective depth of the
pile shall be 0-300 mm more than specified which is the tolerance of toe
level.

6.3.5 Final Bore Cleaning

On completion of the total length of pile bore, the bore shall be

thoroughly cleaned and flushed till all cuttings and other loose materials
are removed from base.

6.3.5.1 Muck DiSpoSal

1. Bentonite Slurry is not eco-friendly and hence this slurry has to be

disposed safely.
2. The mud pumped from the bore shall be directed to settling tank.
3. The settling tank is frequently cleaned to remove the sediments
accumulated at the bottom of the tank.
4. The sediments are dried up and they are disposed by dumpers.
5. The muck in fluid stage shall be disposed at designated places by
tankers. The semi-solid muck out of borehole shall be mixed with dry soil
and disposed at designated dump yard.

6.3.6 InSertion of reinforcenent cage

The following points are to be taken care of while fabricating and
inserting the reinforcement cage.
1. All reinforcement shall be Fe XX conforming to IS: 1786 as per GFC. The
reinforcement shall be assembled and welded/tied together and made up
into cages sufficiently rigid to withstand handling without damage and
distortion.

and be fixed to them by approved binding wire, the free ends of which
shall be turned towards the centre.
4. Clear cover to all main reinforcement in pile shaft shall be not less than
50mm and shall be maintained by suitable spacers. Suitable and adequate
cover blocks of durable material shall be provided to achieve the same.
The cover blocks shall be placed all along the length of reinforcement cage
with adequate number in the upper portion over the length of the
temporary casing. The cover blocks shall be aligned for smooth lowering
of the cage into the pile bore and for lifting of the temporary casing
without displacing the reinforcement cage from its position. The cover
blocks shall be manufactured with concrete of equivalent grade of
concrete designated for the pile, using the same grade and type of
cement. Alternately, the cover block shall be of more durable material
approved by client / consultant, which will not lead to corrosion of the
reinforcement or spalling of the concrete cover.
5. Placement of reinforcement cage:

Reinforcement cage shall be lowered into bore by gravity only after bore
cleaning is completed taking care to see that no collapse of soil takes
place during lowering. For piles requiring multiple lengths of reinforcement
cages, the first length of cage shall be lowered and held in position above
the bore, with top of the bars adequately strengthened, on which upper
cage is placed in position, lapped and joined in place. This portion of the
cage is then lowered. It is important to ensure that the laps are welded
before lowering.
6. U Bar shall be welded at the effective distance of 100 mm from the
reinforcement top. Latter this U bar will be tied with hook of casing top
enabling to control the reinforcement top level.

6.3.7 Pile Concreting

6.3.7.1 FluShing and Cleaning the Bore
1. Prior to placing concrete, flushing will be done with fresh Bentonite slurry
using tremie pipes connected to Bentonite pump to ensure that heavy
contaminated Bentonite suspension has not settled at bottom of pile bore.
2. Tremie pipe with flushing head will be lowered to carry out the flushing.
3. Fresh Bentonite slurry shall be pumped through tremie pipe using high
pressure Bentonite pump.

4. The specific gravity of fresh Bentonite slurry used shall be checked at

frequent intervals, and it shall not be more than 1.10.
5. The flushing of the bore shall be done continuously till the bore bottom is
thoroughly cleaned. This can be verified by conducting specific gravity test
which shall be equal to the pumped fresh Bentonite and it shall not be
more than 1.12 before concreting.

CharacteriSticS of Bentonite SuSpenSionS for Bored CaSt in Situ

PileS:

1. Marsh Viscosity of bentonite suspension when tested by a Marsh Cone

shall be between 30 to 60 stoke; in special cases is may be allowed up
to 90 stoke.
2. The pH value of the bentonite suspension shall be between 9 & 11.5.
3. The density of fresh bentonite suspension shall be between 1.03 &
1.10 g/ml, whereas after contamination with deleterious material in
the bore hole it may rise up to 1.25 g/ml.
The above test shall be done at every pile at every stage and it shall be
recorded in the field register/ formats.

6.3.7.2 Concreting

Concreting should be done with the use of tremie pipe method, to permit
deposition of concrete in successive layers, without permitting the
concrete within the placer to fall through drilling mud. Only freshly mixed
concrete shall be used. Concreting of the pile should be done immediately
after cleaning of the bore hole and placing of the reinforcement cage and
should be uninterrupted. In case of any interruption during the concreting
procedure, due to unexpected reasons, further decision should be taken in
accordance with IS: 2911.
Following points are to be noted during concreting by Tremie Pipe Method:

1. Concrete should be coherent, rich in cement(cement content not less

than 400kg per m3 of concrete) and having a slump 150 to 180 mm.
Clean potab e water free from mpur t es should be used for
manufacturing concrete.
2. Tremie pipe concreting shall be done per IS: 456/2000, IS: 2911
(Part1/Sec2) using a pipe of minimum 200mm diameter. The tremie
should be large enough with due regard with the size of aggregate. For
20mm aggregate the tremie pipe should be of diameter not less than
150mm.Paticular care shall be taken to maintain the vertical alignment

4. The steel hopper at top shall have a volume greater than the tremie
pipe volume; a suitable steel stopper at the neck of the hopper which
can be withdrawn with least resistance can be used instead of sliding
plug. The hopper and pipe shall be clean of encrusted concrete, dust,
debris etc. and shall be watertight. Concrete placing into hopper shall
be facilitated using suitable ramps or staging. The hopper shall be filled
with concrete completely and then the stopper plate removed to allow
concrete to flow into pipe. Subsequent charges of concrete shall be
maintained as continuous as required till pile bore is concreted to
specified depth.
5. The tremie pipe should always penetrate well into the concrete, forming
water tight system, with an adequate margin of safety against
accidental withdrawal of pipe. The tip of the tremie at any time shall be
at least 1.0 m inside concrete. The tremie pipe shall be withdrawn in
stages as and when concrete builds up in the bore.
6. The casing shall be lifted only to the extent that there is minimum 1m
concrete above the bottom of casing. The withdrawal of casing shall be
done carefully not to pull out the reinforcement cage, not to create any
voids or ground water pockets, not to lift the concrete with casing and
not to create any necking or wastage of concrete.
7. Concrete shall be poured into pile bore until all contaminated concrete
at top of bore reaches above cutoff level and neat concrete appears at
and below the cutoff level.
8. Piles should be casted 1m above the cutoff level.
9. All tremie pipes should be properly cleaned after use.
10. Concrete shall be discharged from the truck mixer within 2 hours of
time of loading (IS 4926-2003 5.2.2). If beyond 2 hours contractor shall
be required to obtain approval from the engineer, before the concrete
will be used. Normally, RMC supplied to the site are mixed with
retarding admixtures which enables the concrete to be used within 3
hours of supply at site. In case RMC supplied is not consumed within 3
hours of supply the quantity of RMC remaining unused beyond 3 hours
it may be re dosed at site with retarding admixtures to regain the
workability considering the maximumpermissible
dosage of admixture manufacturer.

fetches aggregate present in the concrete then only it shall be made
understood that concrete top level has been achieved.
13. Concrete cube samples to be taken at site at the rate 1 set (of 6 cubes,
i.e. 3 for 7 days and 3 for 28 days) / 50 cubic-meters from each RMC
source in a shift. ( refer IS 4926-2003, 6.3.2)
14. Test procedure and acceptance criteria for concrete cube test are as per
IS 516 and IS 456.
15. Random inspection shall be done by excavating pile after 7 days of
casting to review process/end result is in line with requirement.

6.4 Site Clean-up

Upon completion of piling all forms, casings, equipments, construction
tools, debris, scrap etc. shall be removed from place of work. Exposed and
finished concrete and dowel surfaces shall be left in a clean condition up to
the satisfaction of the Engineer. In case of Bored cast-in situ piles any
discarded and/or used Bentonite shall be removed from site without delay.
