STANDARD OPERATING PROCEDURE OF SCAFFOLDING


ERECTION AND DISMANTLING

 Calculate and ensure the availability of scaffolding material for the


particular elevated structure. If required prepare a scaffolding plan
drawing for the task by a competent person.
 A trained scaffold competent person/site engineer shall monitor the
scaffolding structure. Only trained scaffold workmen should erect or
dismantle the scaffold.
 Material should be shifted manually to normal heights, & pm hoist or
any mobile equipment should be used to shift the material to higher
elevations.
 Ensure proper supervision while shifting material to higher
elevations using pm hoist or mobile equipment.
 Ensure materials are properly stacked and well maintained. Always
check visually for defects such as cracks, bending, heavy rust etc., use
only good quality materials for erection of scaffolding.

Erection of scaffolding

 Scaffolding must be constructed and maintained according to


certified engineering drawings.
 Risk assessment and job safety analysis shall be carried out by a
competent person and work permit should be taken before the start
of erection of scaffold
 Scaffold erection shall be carried out only by skilled workmen under
the supervision of a competent person/site engineer.
 Scaffolding erection shall be carried out only when the area is
barricaded.
 Lifting of scaffolding material shall be done with rope and pulley
arrangement.
 During scaffolding erection proper access must be provided for the
workmen for climbing the scaffolding. Jallies used as platform shall
be secured against displacement.

 Red tag must be provided on the scaffolding to caution that the


scaffolding is under erection/ Unsafe and not use.
 Scaffolding should be square, straight and plumb in all direction.
 All scaffold components present should be tight and secure.
 Sole plate/base plate shall be used to prevent sinking of vertical
pipes.
 Working platform shall be fully decked or MS jalliesand must tie
down securely.
 Adequate railing to be provided and if possible toe board to be
provided.
 Access to the platforms from ground level shall be through stair
tower. In case tower is not possible, aluminum ladders shall be used
with landing sat height not more than 9m;every ladder is secured
against sliding, extended 1m above the landing and provided with
vertical lifeline for using fall arrestor/full body harness.
 Minimum30ft (10m) distance clearness required from the overhead
power lines.
 Warning devices/signs provided if erected over walkways or access
(flashing lights, reflective tapes or area should be barricaded).
 Safety nets to be provided in case there is any possibility for the fall
of persons from height and fall of materials.
 Only after providing green tag scaffolding should be used to work at
height.

Dismantling of scaffolding

 Risk assessment and job safety analysis shall be carried out by a


competent person and work permit should be taken before the start
of dismantle of scaffold.
 Scaffold dismantling area shall be barricaded and only skilled
workmen shall be used for this work.
 The scaffold being dismantled shall be provided with red tag to
indicate unsafe and do not work.
 Dismantled material shall be lowered using rope or pulley or by pm
hoist.
 Dropping of materials shall be avoided to prevent damage to
materials and injury to the workmen below.

 Double lanyard safety harness shall be anchored to a strong structure


or lifeline before attempting to dismantle the scaffold or fall arrestor
to be used.
 At the end of the day, if a scaffold is going to be left-dismantled, it is
essential to lower all the loose scaffold material down and ensure
that the scaffold is tied adequately to building/structure.
 All dismantled materials shall be stacked in the appropriate manner
at the designated location and barricaded the area.

 In case of emergency, follow the site emergency plan.
